David Archuleta wants to know: What was so great about 'Imagine'?

Categories: American Idol, Idolatry

I kid you not…as you’ll see in part 1 of our interview with this season’s American Idol runner-up, he’s still trying to understand why the nation went nuts over his week-two semifinal performance of John Lennon’s classic; part 2, meanwhile, finds him discussing the "magic rainbow" found in the lyrics of the season 7 victory anthem, "The Time of My Life." Check back tomorrow for part 3 with Archie (update: click here to see it), as well as our chat with reigning Idol champ David "Happy Trails" Cook. (And look out for Syesha "Wonder Woman" Mercado on Friday!)

Good God, why is he so adorable? Even as a person who was not necessarily rooting for him the whole time, he is just…really, really ridiculously cute. They should make plush toys of that kid–sales would go through the roof.

  • ron

So Sleazy, you really have the guts to interview David after everything you said about him the whole season?
David is as adorable as always.

  • Elizabeth

Thanks Michael – God bless Archie! Its nice to see that he is a down-to-earth kid, nice to see him in a different setting than the manufactured one(s) he’s been in.

  • Putti

Wow Slezak, must be painful for you to interview him? Archie is as genuine and humble as he is in all his interviews.
Can’t wait for his next big step.

  • Melina

He is so adorable and so nice and hope he has a great career.

  • Patty

I didn’t like him all season. If they would have showed us this side of him from the beginning – all normal and stuff, not an automaton – I might have felt different about him.

  • shary

    Slezak,
Interviewing Archie must make you feel like the worst person right now… We told you since the begining Archie was 100% real and the only one of a kind on Idols this year. Cook may have won AI, but Archie is the real World Idol. Archie’s fanbase is more diverse that people think. I’m 27 and not from the USA!!!

You know, he’s so relaxed and willing to answer any question. This is the David we wanted all season. I suspect that he was there all along, but between the pressure of holding up to impossible standards (which I think he did) and the editing of his interviews, pre-performance pieces, we didn’t get to see this beyond Imagine 1.0 week.
This guy is incredible. His voice, at 17, is beyond words. The judges never took the time to point out what an instrument he has. His management will work on the interviewing skills, but from what I’ve seen this week, he doesn’t really need much work. He’s happy and lays it all out there for the world to see…so refreshing.
I’m so happy for he and Cook…they both deserve everything that is coming to them.

I must admit, seeing this and his funny moments BTS and on interviews, makes this die hard Cook fan really appreciate and like Archie. I can’t help it, what with all the positive brotherly vibes you get from the two.

  • Kathy

I love the part where he swats at the rainbow. David might not have followed the media story on him, but he must have been aware of the general perception of him. Yet he smiles on. He is so refreshing!

Oh god. I have to watch Slezak interview Archie? I stopped watching these weeks ago. Sigh. Couldn’t they have substituted a different person person? Ah, well, I’ll watch it. Anything for Archie.

  • sabrina

Man, I was kinda hoping for Archie to punch you Sleeze-bag. Nah, he’s too nice to do that. Hmm…I wonder if his dad was there, maybe he would do it for Archie because you definately deserve it.

  • siena

This interview is a great example of good and evil. The kid doesn’t know how evil that man in blue is! Free pass? I would punch that meatball if he asked me question like that!

  • Dan Daoust

You people coming down on Slezak have to either get a life or get bent. One or the other, no opting out.

  • VB

This guy is awesome. He grows on me a little bit more every day. I wish they’d have shown this fun side to him on the show.

  • Denise

He was never an automaton, that was the perspective of really anrrow minded people. Who he is and who he was was ALWAYS right there for everyone to see, some people just didn’t take the time to look.
Slezak, how did it FEEL to interview him? How did your previous ideas/thoughts of him change, if at all?

  • Annie

What a great interview. I was in tears laughing about the rainbow thing. I really would love to know what Michael – who’s been so hard on David A. all season – was thinking of him afterwards. Did he regret what he wrote about Archie being a robot? Because he so clearly isn’t. I hope Michael is mature enough to admit that he was wrong all along. Guess the AI producers are mostly to blame for that though. Then again, if I was able to find enough info on Archie and see his personality from the start why wasn’t a journalist who even got paid for it able to? I think that Michael’s mind was set from the start because Archie was a favourite from the beginning and with him only being 17, and then the stage-Dad rumour crap coming up, that maybe Michael was just a little too cynic and too self-absorbed and too “cool” to see what was right there from the start. Hope he sees it now and can admit to it. Archie is a great guy and yeah, destined for superstardom.

I voted for Archie in the final after his last performance. He is such a refreshing “kid” to listen to when he talks. It must have been really difficult for him to be the only one have to do his school work along with everything else of learning new songs, etc., especially as the weeks went on and he had to learn more songs. I watched his Star Search videos on You Tube and really enjoyed them. It’s no wonder he had trouble with his vocal cords a few years ago with so much singing, plus being in puberty when boys’ voices change.
I hope I get to continue to see David A. sing somewhere in the future. I think of him as a singer like Josh Groban or Michael Buble as he matures.

  • nikki

I always knew David was a a great guy and didn’t understand why some people were so hard on him. I always thought is was sad, because he’s so young and he needs time. I wish him all the best and look forward to hearing his album. And Sleazy, it must have been weird interviewing him after all you’ve said. Hope you learned a lesson to keep things more professional.

  • Lynne

David really must be telling the truth when he says he doesn’t follow the media stuff about him– otherwise he wouldn’t be doing an interview with this guy who’s been such a jerk to him all season long. Pearls before swine, I say!!!!

  • Sueda

David is such a amazing talent. I have never heard a voice like that and so much emotion when he sings. I really wanted him to win but know that he will have a great career. All the best to you Archie.

  • Two faced?

That’s nice. I haven’t seen the videos yet, but from the comments it sounds like Slezak showed David A his other face.

  • adam807

NOTHING was great about David A’s “Imagine.” John Lennon must have been rolling in his grave. To take one of the most beautiful, simplest pop songs ever and Mariah Carey all over it was criminal.

  • sue

Archuleta is gracious as always. Slezack is as phony as they come.

  • antiAI

wow! sleazy and the Angel together in an interview? must be really painful and hard for you. sorry if i sound upset or something coz i am. it’s because after bashing him relentlessly for the past few months you actually had the nerve to interview him. you are not and will never be worthy to be in his presence.it’s a good thing though that david is not like you coz if he were i dont think he’d even consider acknowledging your existence.

  • Slayed

What, no teletubbies? Sleazak will never come around to liking DA because he (Sleazak) is mediocre. And mediocrisy does not recognize excellence. I think he is also the type who would never admit he was wrong.
I don’t want to focus on Sleazak anymore. David A is a gifted singer who will become a superstar. He just lights up the room and this interview just shows how amazing of a person he is as well.

  • Mary

David A. is completely adorable, a true gem. I don’t see how anyone could say anything mean about such a sweet and innocent kid.

  • Force

Phony vs. Genuine. I will let you decide who David is and who Sleazak is.
The funniest thing about this is now that we see the two of them together, we can compare them and it is painfully obvious who has the far superior character and will stand the test of time. THAT IS FUNNY.

  • Fan

It’s odd to be reading comments like “Why did we never see this side of him?” It’s never been hidden. He’s been a sweet guy, and not a teletubbie or a robot, all season. The question is why people insisted on imposing that idea on him.

  • Lemonade

    Awwwwwww. That’s all I got.
