Judging by the trailer embedded below, this October’s How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, based on Toby Young’s memoir of his disastrous stint as a writer at Vanity Fair, looks awfully broad. Simon Pegg’s presence as the Young character (here renamed Sidney Young, perhaps to keep the author from suing himself) makes the picture look like the Hot Fuzz version of The Devil Wears Prada. That may or may not be a good thing. The most amusing element of the clip is Jeff Bridges’ performance as the Graydon Carter figure. Not just for his memorably shaggy-yet-aerodynamic hairdo (though it hardly does justice to the Vanity Fair editor’s actual coif), but also for what Gawker accurately describes as the Lebowski-esque vibe of his Dude-ish line readings; he seems to be acting in a subtler, much cooler satire than everyone else here.
How does the trailer make you feel, PopWatchers? Friendly, alienated, or lost?

I love Simon Pegg, but after Run Fat Boy Run, he’s going to have to do A LOT to get me back on his side. This looks terrible. I’m going to have to watch the entirety of SPACED now just to get the bad taste out of my mouth.
I’m going to see it, if only for Gillian Anderson.
Actually, I’m somewhat amused. I’ll see it.
I’m with you, Oola..Simon Pegg is awesome, but it’s been hard to follow him from his own awesome work to these slick, Hollywood movies. It’s like Kevin Smith…I appreciate him branching out and doing Jersey Girl, and acting in Catch and Release, but he’s at his best when he’s in Clerks mode. I want Pegg to do well, but let’s have some more Wright/Pegg/Frost/Stevenson fun too, ok?
Oh, and I don’t want to see this, as I hate Kirsten Dunst with the fire of a thousand suns.
Nose-
I just wish you would tell us how you really feel about Kirsten Dunst.
Please read the book this is based on. It’s really great and I am guessing the movie will blow. Adaptations of quirky books so rarely work. Yes, I’m talking to you Running With Scissors.
I would TOTALLY watch the Hot Fuzz version of The Devil Wears Prada. This? Eh, not so much.
Ceballos…I could go into more detail, but I think the filter would catch many of the words I would use.
the last time i was entertained by Kirsten Dunst was when she was in Bring it On. However, this book was hilarious so maybe I’ll…sneak into it.
I love Gillian Anderson!
Gillian Anderson is in it so I’m there. No contest. No discussion.Don’t care what, who else is in it, she is and that cancels everything else out for me!Yay!
Gillian Anderson is still a hot foxx
Simon Pegg and “The Dude” in a film together excite me; Kirsten Dunst and Megan Fox as female leads…not so much.
i was about to type exactly what Vince said.
i’m not sure why Hollywood insists on continually pushing Kirsten Dunst on us (don’t even get me started on Meagan Fox and her type), but i’ll line up for Simon Pegg and Jeff Bridges any day.
If Gillian Anderson is in it, I’m so going, at least she has a decent part in it, can’t wait to see it!
If Gillian Anderson is on the movie…i’m there!!!!;)
Gillian Anderson is my deepest love and inspiration. Nothing will ever stop me from viewing a film she is in.
Since Gillian Anderson is in the movie, I’ll watch it even if she appears for just one second!
love gillian shes a brillient actress cant wait to see it, bring it on.

It’s got yummy Danny Huston in it. I’ll will definitely go to see this.
Gillian Anderson and Simon Pegg. I am so there.
Well same here about Simon Pegg and Gillian Anderson.I’ll go just for them.
I just saw a free screening of the movie in NYC, and I have to say it is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. Much better than Hot Fuzz. It far exceeded my expectations.
I’m so there. I’m not sure how I feel about some of the cast, but Simon Pegg is great and I ADORE Gillian Anderson. She could be a five-second blur in the background and I’d drop $12 to see it.
