Who will (and who should) win season 7 of 'American Idol'?

Categories: American Idol, Idolatry

Dawnie Walton, Annie Barrett, and I ponder the two most important questions of the modern era the week while chowing down on Central Park vendor treats. Watch for yourself, then join the Great Idol Debate in the comments section below.

    Should: Cook
    Will: Honestly, anybody’s guess

  • NineDaves

    Will: David Cook
    Should: Carly Smithson

  • Julia

Should win: David Cook, no question
Will win: No idea. I really think it could go either way, but I have a feeling the producers wish Cook would win- Archuleta winning would just show in an extremely public, obvious way that AI is not about choosing the next big current, contemporary recording artist anymore, if indeed it ever was.

  • Broadway Baby

I’m with Julia – I am suspect whoever wins this more so now than any other season. Not that I don’t want Cook to win, but if he does it’s going to be with an asterisk. Like Bonds or Clemens.

  • Stacey

    Should Win: David Cook
    Will Win: David Cook
I just think David Cook has the best chance for a real career post AI in the mode of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. And also AI needs a relevate male winner who actually sells. There is talk of a male winner curse. David A. would do well for his first CD, but he wouldn’t sell in his second or third. Cook would. I just think David Cook is more original, and more of a now artist for sales.
But then this American Idol, anything is possible. But I think David Cook will and should win.

  • Lauri

Mike I love that you’re still rooting for Carly. Too bad we can’t have her in Archuleta’s place.
    Will: Cookie
    Should: Carly

  • Meghan

A David C and Carly finale would have been amazing. But I’m a total David Cook fangirl so I’d still be rooting for him anyway.

  • Lauren

    Should: David Cook
Will: It BETTER be David Cook. He has been the most inventive, consistent, and interesting contestant of the season. Archuleta has been stagnant in his growth— nothing of his comes close to his cover of Imagine, (in fact it may have been all downhill since then). But Cook leaves us with a legacy of terrific performances with Hello, Billie Jean, Always Be My Baby, Music of the Night, and First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. (And I would personally add more to that list, but I think everyone can agree those were terrific!)
Overall, the man deserves it. And he has the potential to write great songs and put out some relevant music, which I’m not sure Archuleta is ready or independent enough to do just yet.
Oh and PS- Cook is looking GREAT these days!

  • Erin

I agree with Stacey on the should win and your reasons. As far as will win, I agree with everyone who says it’s anyone’s guess. And part of me wants Archie to win, just so that Cook release an album that he’s had some control over (aka Daughtry).

  • Ben

    I say: who cares?

  • Ben

I say: who cares? Both are blah.

  • KG

    should: cook
will: archie (don’t underestimate the power of the tweens)
    who really should: carly

  • Jeannie

Someone who wasn’t even interested in auditioning (Cook) has sucked in an entire country. If David Cook wins – America will get what it deserves – another wannabe rocker with a bad comb-over. And the kid with the talent and desire will be overlooked. Too bad.

  • Raven_Moon

Alas, I had hoped for a David Cook/Carly Smithson finale, but I knew it wouldn’t happen.
    Who should win?…David Cook
Who will win?…Probably David Archuleta. He’s appears to have the tween & PTA mom vote.

  • Christina

David Cook should and will win. If not this series is going to be in even more trouble than it already is

  • Why oh why

SANJAYA should win season 7, he is much better than the talentless robots of this year.

  • Jim

I want Cook to lose so that he isn’t stuck singing crappy songs picked out for him. Imagine if Daugtry had won AI. He’d be nowhere now.

  • Why oh why

And SANJAYA will win in a surprise last-minute twist, if Idol producers want to save this sinking show.

  • RedRidingHood

    David Cook will win.
    Melinda Doolittle should have won.

  • Jenn

Don’t underestimate the DC fandom votes. We are voting just as much if not more than Archuleta supporters.
    Should: David Cook
    Will: David Cook

  • kk

    should win: david archuleta.
will win: i have no idea.

People seem to be misinformed. Even though Daughtry placed 4th in his season, American Idol’s production company still had the option to sign him to a recording contract, which they did, with the product being the album “Daughtry” — you know the one that was the best selling album of 2007 according to Billboard. The point is any of the top 10 (or 12), are all obligated to 19E if 19E chooses to sign them. Therefore, win or lose, David Cook will be under 19E’s thumb. And he is better off winning because (1) he gets presumably the better $$, (2) his album will be promoted better, and (3) he wants to win it so he’ll be a happy camper. Please stop with this nonsense about him being better off not winning. As for street cred or whatever, he’s gonna have to work for it just the same as Daughtry as all of them will be painted with the same American Idol cheesy brush when they release their first album.

What folks seems to be MISSING is that Analog Heart is back up on Amazon (not available yet, tho) as a BOX SET. My guess? 19’s either remixed the album and added, possibly, idol stuff…or left David’s recordings as is and added idol stuff. I’m guessing they’ve pulled HIS STUFF under THEIR banner. *shrugs*

    Who Should win: Carly
Who will win: I have to say DC. He is ready to go straight to the top 40 with his style of singing. DA is very good, but I can’t see him making a top 40 hit, unless it was the 50’s again.

  • Brenda

I see nothing hot about David Cook .I am also a Jason Castro fan and I can see no other person winning but David Archuleta.I thought his redition of With You was amazing!!!

  • wh

I was hoping for more excitement after last year’s beat-boxer vs. 17 year old. I nearly didn’t watch this year after that dull mess. Since I can’t vote for who I really wanted, Castro, David Cook should win. Archuletta has a beautiful voice, but if you’re older than 15, he’s dull. Cook I might actually listen to. Castro, I’ve downloaded, and look forward to his album. So I guess I don’t really care who wins.

  • Gwen

I think David Cook will win. Rocker fans have seen a couple slip through their fingers in past years, so I think it’s time for voting revenge. Also, if the fans AI have shown anything this season, it’s that they don’t like being force fed. That’s why Carly exited so soon. So, little Archie’s been pimped all season. The fans will come out of the woodwork to make sure the one who experienced the most growth – and thereby deserves the win – will be crowned the American Idol of 2008.

Should win: David Archuleta – unbelievable talent and he really connects with his audience! Why do the ET writers focus on a few lyric stumbles by David A. and ignore major bad notes from Cook???? David A. doesn’t have the experience onstage that Cook does – but he has had exceptional performances at least 90 percent of the time. And the other 10 percent would be amazing if he tried them again – especially “With You” – the kid deserves everything he gets, he’s worked so hard.

Who Should win?David Cook, no question. He has the passion, the talent, the marketability, the looks, the stage presence…he’s the whole deal. DA, while obviously a nice kid, needs some years on him in the real world, and away from Daddy dearest, before he can figure out if he’s more than just a Barry Manilow light.
