Mining an annual collegiate tradition — the equally feared and beloved parents weekend — was genius on the part of Greek‘s producers. Why? Well, in the case of this show, its juiciness is two-fold. First, we were treated to how the students prepped for the visits by their parental units: Kappa Tau initially decided to proudly "fly their flag" of trashy living before cleaning up their act; ZBZ, natch, put on a ritzy tea for the the visit by Rebecca’s father, Senator Logan; and Dale flew his own flag — a banner welcoming his parents — in his dorm room.
More deliciously important than all that was getting to see actual parents of these characters we’ve been following for two seasons now. Comparing parents was always my favorite part of this weekend back in college. Sure, I was pumped to see my own ‘rents (they’d sweetly show up wearing their matching "Drake Mom" and "Drake Dad" sweat-shirts… awww), but seeing those who raised my wacky friends — and the even wackier people whom I just watched from afar? It’s brilliant! It’s truly insightful! Like looking directly into the soul of a person. And it was no different in the case of Greek. (On that note, I have to quickly mention that I’m loving how the Greek world has been expanded lately. Between this and the flashback-filled episode, it finally feels like this little patch of sororities and fraternities don’t exist in some weird, remote bubble.)
The parents that surprised me most were the Cartwrights, who spawned the lovely Rusty and Casey (Jacob Zachar and Spencer Grammer, pictured). I get that they’re college professors and, you know, into the whole academic side of university life, but I’ve never seen two people who were so fully immersed in the collegiate world but at the same time totally didn’t get it! How could they be so closed-minded and averse to the Greek system when they’ve existed a stone’s throw away for years? But this conflict made the story good. The best part of this storyline was what it conjured up between Casey and Rusty — a big ol’ brother-sister fight! Who knew there was so much pent-up venom between them? And who would have guessed that Rusty was the golden child in the family? Casey — the pretty sorority president that she is — totally gives off that vibe. It felt good to see her not be so perfect for once.
And while some of last night’s episode felt like free PR for the Greek system, I have to admit: Rusty’s heart-wrenching ode to Casey and his decision to be in a frat was touching. "If I were like you, I’d have amazing people skills, I’d be able to solve problems creatively," he proclaimed. "If I got to be president of my fraternity, I’d basically be learning how to be a president of a small corporation. All in all, I would be pretty incredible." And, you know, he convinced his parents of it, too! Parental turnaround in just 47 hours and 11 minutes! (That’s the amount of time the Cartwrights were in town and the name of the episode.)
So, Greek fans out there, some burning questions for you: How much did you love Dale’s parents and, specifically, the fact that his mother was played by Connie Ray? (Remember her amazing work in The Torkelsons and Almost Home?) Especially after the fight over Rebecca’s treatment of Cappie this week, can Greek Row’s Most Unlikely Couple actually make their relationship work? And, where were the Omega Chis — specifically, Calvin and Evan — this week?

this episode…and this recap! it was nice to finally see these characters do more than party-planning (not that i don’t love that!)…I was also a little surprised by the Cartwrights…I understood where they were coming from and what the story line was trying to accomplish, but it felt a little forced. All in all, great episode, I loved the few bits Ashleigh got, and for the first time maybe ever, I genuinely felt bad for Rebecca. now that’s something!
I feel cheated. Not by the show, which is showing surprising depth this season, but by this recapper! We are forced to go two weeks without a recap, and when we finally get one, it’s tissue paper thin. And no mention of why we didn’t get recaps for the past two episodes (one of which was the pivotal and revelatory flashback episode)!!! COME ON! I know this is a little, basic cable gem, and I guess I should be happy to get a recap at all, but for all the love you seem to have for this show, it seems to get no respect!
Yeah, Tanner you’re back. I missed your Greek re-caps. I am loving this season. I wish I could remember my fave line of the night, it was from Cappie and he was talking about how the weather at school is so completely different from everywhere else in the state. Even in winter they never have to wear coats. Where is CRU supposed to be located anyway? Rusty and Casey are from Chicago — I always assumed that CRU was in California but last night Cappie said he was from Northern California and implied that he was from out-of-state too. I suppose it doesn’t matter but I do wonder. Also wondering where people stand on Frannie. They’ve done a good job of redeeming her especially during the flashback episode but I keep thinking that the old bitchy Frannie is going to rear her head any day now.
Dude… where is the Gossip Girl recap?
also where were Evan and Calvin? perhaps because they had already introduced calvin’s and Evan’s parents last season we didn’t to seem them again. it would have been fun to see Dale introduce his friend Calvin to his parents explaining that he is a gay, black frat boy – it would have blown their minds and shown how Dale is evolving from his parents.
i second the need for Gossip Girl recap. Youyoung where are you?
ok, I try to catch this and the bones mini-tv watch every week, b/c I watch Gossip Girl. This recap was a little crappy. It didn’t really tell me anything about the episode. I read the Bones one just a few minutes ago, and it told me a crap load more about the episode than this one did. Does the recapper actually watch the entire show??
While this recap might be a little weak (where was the hilarious parts about Dale’s freak folks). Honestly what parents would bunk up with their son when he lives in a one bedroom dorm room and has a roommate! Or what about Cappie gearing up to impress senator Logan (“is he a cigar man” lol)just to have Rebbecca tell him that they weren’t going to meet. However, I’m glad to see that the recap has returned because it was sincerely missed last week. So thanks Tanner for acknowledging this fantastic show. Next week please write more!
What’s with the second season thing do you ever go to the official homepage read anything about the show this is still season 1 and not season 2 there was that little break due to some strike you might have heard off but it’s still officially season 1 and not 2 so stop with the whole this season thing there is only one.
Actually Onno, Season 1 was released on DVD prior to season 2 starting.
i agree with ANNE. Introducing Calvin to Dale’s parents would have been awesome, especially since they went through the trouble of cultivating a relationship between the two. But I guess that would’ve overshadowed everything else going on in the episode. I thought the epi was ok, but it’s a little weird that Rebecca is apart of a sisterhood and yet she leans on her bf when she’s feeling sad. Frannie would’ve at least scolded her father if Rebecca was her little sister.
First off I love this show, and I’ve been missing the recap!!!
Second, Dale’s parents were funny but right now I can’t get over how much I hate Rebecca and Cappi together, she doesn’t deserve him. He needs to grow up a little and get Casey back.
Third, I don’t think we needed Evan and Calvin in this episode as we’ve already met Calvin’s dad and Evan isn’t a freshman. Besides he needed a break after his massive stupitiy last week (kissing Franny and not telling Casey he wants her back).
Finally, I really did like the development of Rusty and Casey’s relationship and seeing why exactly Casey has so much resentment towards her little bro.
I can’t wait for next week. I hope Casey finds a guy, but at the same time its hard for a president of a sorority to have a social life outside of Greek life… I was an AXO and saw it first hand. P.S. MOst of the Greeky stuff in this show is so dead on!!
To Anne: Cappie said “Who said there isn’t an upside to global warming?” And Senator Logan responded, “Who said there’s global warming?” and then the two shared an awkward laugh. That was also my favorite part of the episode! I think in another episode it was mentioned that the school is in Ohio? Or maybe this was mentioned in a recap or from another commenter, I dunno. I went to school in Ohio and it snowed 9 months out of the year. Global warming, indeed.
hey! where is this week’s recap? i love this show!!!
NO MORE GREEK RECAPS?! PLEASEE I LOVE THIS SHOW.. BRING THEM BACK!
