that was the best episode of idolatry i have every seen. i couldn’t agree with you more on every aspect and it was hilarious!!

  • luvwvu

The “bong” comment was totally rude and offensive!

  • Lint_Licker

Good news, Carly’s fat a** has gotten big enough that the whole EW staff will fit comfortably in it.

  • bret

Ha, loved the bong comment. I was in complete shock when Carly was sent home–I literally didn’t speak for five minutes after. But this was a really good episode of Idolatry. Props Slezak.

  • LeaNNe

*nod nod nod* this episode was on the money :p will miss the irish smithson. david cook should be the next american idol. if not …

  • Braden

Lovely and talented? having a big voice is not enough. You have to be able to use it, and Carly couldn’t use it. She always ended up screeching and screaming and falling off key at some point in every song.
She had great potential, and still may go places, but lets not fool ourselves into thinking that she is a great singer.
And running offstage and screaming like a little girl when the judges were trying to complement her on the last night was just the icing on the idiot cake.
    Good riddance, Carly, good riddance.

  • Paula

I loved, loved this episode of Idolatry. (so right in everything)
Carly was my favorite and I’m so pissed with America… I mean, brooke is still in the show??? Brooke, can I started over, White???
And that comment of Archuleta, is so true, I mean stop pimping the kid! We know that half of America love the kid before the pimping (remember Imagine) but now he just opens his mouth and is Amaizing, the bomb and wherever acording to the judges.
America has bad taste, know I totally know it.. I hope that Carly could have a album after this, if is not I will flight to San Diego to see her perform in the Irish Bar.

  • Rita

Yeah i agree I thought that bong commentary was offensive to Jason and us Jason fans. I just always thought that maybe contestants shouldnt take this competition soooo seriously and i applaud jason for that you know AI is so rigged anyways that he’s just letting everything flow, that’s why he gets my vote every week no matter what. With Carly even though she sounded so well she was trying so hard to please simon and sounded so desperate like she was drowning and needed to be rescued.. She should have more confidence she’s talented and now with all the exposure she has who cares about 19? There are so many talented good singers out there who havent have the need to be backed up by a huge label to be famous and they are doing great! She’ll find a label that fits and finally a sound that suits her and she’ll make a great album and so will Michael Johns! Also, I cant stand Archuleta just because of the blunt way the producers are pimping him.. so you guys are right!

  • Betty

BOOOOO!! To Idol. How could they dump Carly & keep pitiful mousy little Brooke? Is no one voting for singing talent any more?? Idol has really gone to pot. It gets worse every week.

  • Not A Fan

Give it up already EW. She wasn’t THAT great. She failed many times before, so her getting voted off doesn’t surprise me. And no the voters did NOT choose Brooke over Carly. There are five people in the competition. Your sickening love of Carly has got to stop.

  • suzanne

Surprised that Michael and Kristin didn’t mention that Carly didn’t get the votes because her song used the word “Jesus” without “Our Lord and Savior.” It was a great performance–it was the irreverance of the song.
I agree that the cut away for David A was wrong. they should have just shown him mess up the lyrics. So I agree–that was unfair to him and the audience. (Kind of a good arrangement of his song though, I thought.)
I’m also surprised that M & K–the Idolaters–still think that the show producers want David A to win it. I don’t think so, despite the cut away. I think they’re behind Cook now.
And Jason–come on! dreadful last week. He’ll be excellent this week though, so I’m glad he’s still in it. I don’t mind missing Carly singing Sweet Caroline.

  • Nancy

It would be nice if people would realise that Idol is a SINGING contest. If that ever happens then maybe we will really get to hear some real talent, also I don’t think the people should vote anyway, it should be up to the judges most people are tone deaf anyway and would not know talent if it slapped them in the face.

  • starz22

Wow, America was all wet this past week. Brook and Jason should have been in the bottom with Jason leaving. Carly had her best night ever. What’s wrong with you people…. Vote for talent……..

  • Kristin

Maybe people will just think I’m naive, but it seemed to me that the camera panned away from David Archuleta a second or two before he flubbed the lyrics, so who’s to say he didn’t just benefit from the fact that Idol likes to show different angles?

  • H2

I realise that Carly was Mr Slezak’s favourite but I do think that the reactions shown by this episode of Idolatry were just a tad extreme! As for whether 19 will sign her, they turned down Melinda didn’t they? I read somewhere that Jason was sick this week so that might explain the yawning, etc. so I, for one, am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Oh, and South Park clips just aren’t a good replacement for Godzilla IMHO.
Now to see what this week brings. I think that Syesha could well have problems with the theme. Having said that, several of the contestants could struggle with the need to learn two songs this week so look for more flubbed lyrics on Tuesday …

Apparently my vote is the kiss of death since I voted obsessively for Michael Johns & then Carly. The only reason I continue to watch idol is to be able to come to your site & laugh along with your brilliant commentary. In fact, I can’t wait to see what you say about Neil Diamond week. In my twisted imagination I hear David Archuleta singing the lyrics “Crime that sprang from me warmed the night”, or what about “ride come on baby ride..let me make you dreams come true.” Ouch that last image just gave me a migraine! In this dream I would vote for Babbling Brooke & she would disappear instantly in a dramatic cloud of smoke. The impact of the blast would transport Syesha along with her to the land of Kristy Cook (& her robot forces) In reality, my dialing fingers are not all powerful & they would melt I tried to vote for Brooke. My dream ends with Michael Johns & Carly both topping the charts…bluebirds sing..the sun shines..and life once again has reason.

    Slezak-
I am sure that you get ton of creepy “be my friend” emails, but I have to tell you, I think that the universe wants us to be friends. Your idolatry videos and blog keep me laughing on a weekly basis, and I totally agree with about 90% of what you say (I can’t help it that I still find Archie adorable!). If you are ever in the mood for a chat, let me know. And by the way, I am not a serial killer or stalker! Just a mom, teacher and someone that enjoys idol AND people who actually have serious, but funny, discussions about it. Have a good one.

I am so sick of this season I wish Idol would be canceled before they crown the winner. How in the world can America continuously vote off the more talented people and leave on people like Brooke White. Go figure! She is horrible and should have never eeven made it to the top 24 let alone the top 5. What’s wrong with this picture when someone like Carly Smithson has so much talent and she goes home over Brooke or freakin Jason. This season is insane!!!!

  • Lauri

I’m as upset as you are Mike. So what if the chick has tattoos, so what if she HAD a record deal, so what if she’s Irish. THE CHICK COULD SING! Her being voted off was wrong on SO many levels! I’m so mad I can barely see straight.

  • Belinda

The thing is Brooke was a bundle of nerves. How can one enojoy watching Brooke’s performance when she does does NOT seem to enjoy what she is doing. She is miserable. Everyone seems to be coddling her. Jason who was very ill was getting a bad edit.

  • Noel Brinkley

I voted 51 times for Carly Tuesday night and look where it got me. It’s just another example of America rewarding mediocrity. Brooke Down Palace should be her new name. I mean she forgot the lyrics to the most recent of all the songs. I have decided to give the show one Carly-less watch to see if I really care about anyone else. It’s just too boring without Michael and Carly. Just like you’ve said we knew they wouldn’t win, but seeing them leave this early in the game seems so wrong. Jason better be shirtless this week.

  • wtf

Slezak – GREAT video. Agreed with everything you said… BUT you dropped the ball re Jason phoning it in – not even googling the song’s meaning, especially when he was about to meet ALW, something millions would give their eye teeth for. FORTUNATELY your woman was there to pick up the slack, and SHE pointed it out, saving your arse! Molten hot lava bomb, Slezak!

This is the best Idolatry episode I’ve seen on this site and I couldn’t agree with you more. That last statement about the producers just telling them that no one wins would actually be more satisfying than a David C.(YAY) and David A.(BOO) finale This show is such a joke now, they get rid of all of the interesting and talented people and leave these lifeless people on stage. Besides David C. and maybe Syesha no one has any else personality and the fact that Brooke, Jason, and most of all David A. have been doing the same boring performances every single time is pissing me off too. The only really I’m watching this show is because I have nothing better to do. This show is not interesting anymore, the contestants have almost no personality, and no one but these obsessive fan groups votes on this show anymore. Can this please be the last season or get some interesting people next year.

  • Elizabeth

I think this was also my favorite episode of Idolatry too… the Michael Johns/EW Female Staffers Swoon is a close second. I just hope that there isn’t any major ‘re-inventing’ of the Davids on the way to finale.

  • Stephanie T.

Brooke and Jason clearly got the younger M-Teen-V crowd with their votes. Carly was entertaining enough to have gotten a pass, but as my Mom pointed out the song she sang was about Judas questioning the actions of Jesus, and she thought Carly shouted the song. The original composition was soulful. It was a Sam Morris type of song. Somehow it turned into an over the top enthusiastic smiley Christina Agulera song. Sometimes change is good, but to the voters I guess if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Carly is going to get picked up eventually.

  • Gwen

So sad to see Carly go. But, I’ve mentioned this before, and I’ll say it yet again. The producers and judges are totally to blame for this one. America was FED UP with Carly (Hennessy) Smithson, not because she was an awful singer. No, she was actually one of the best. But, she was SO PRE-PIMPED that we were sick of her before the show even started. Nigel claims that no one pays attention to internet message boards, blogs, etc. But, people do. And, before we even saw her, she was being excessively talked about as the “Irish” girl by Nigel and Simon and Randy and Paula. There’s nothing American viewers hate more than someone trying to tell them who to vote for. The messages were subliminal, but very clear. So…NO! She wasn’t going to win, and there was nothing they could do about it. Even Simon and Randy began to distance themselves from her toward the end, realizing what possibly could have happened. It’s their fault that she never built up a sufficient fan base.

  • NineDaves

i can’t wait to see your interview with carly, slezak. please please please make her sing something!

  • Sandy

    Yup, still mad.

  • Sara

I can honestly tell all you bloggers that think Jason’s votes are all from teeney boppers that you are WRONG. I’m a professional who happens to be my 30’s and I adore Jason. He’s genuine, non-calculating, humble and oh so cute. Most importantly, he has a way of connecting to his music and the audience. I love how he has one bad week (which when I watched over decided wasn’t all that bad), and now he’s talentless. Just because your favorites are voted off, doesn’t give anyone the right to insult others who obviously h ave a bigger fan base.
