How much do the owners of the Empire State Building charge for the right to tint it pretty colors? I ask only because I’m curious about how much Island Def Jam’s marketing team is shelling out today, when the former tallest building in the world will be radiant in pink, lavender, and white to celebrate the solemn occasion of "the week after a Mariah Carey album comes out."
There are so many things I love about the press release that just showed up (twice!) in my inbox. For starters, Mariah is kicking off this wonderful event with a lighting ceremony planned for early this afternoon. That’s right, she’s lighting up the Empire State Building… in broad daylight. But not to worry. At this important ceremony, Mariah won’t be illuminating the actual Empire State Building, but rather "flip{ping} the light switch on a scale model of the Empire State Building." A scale model! How Spinal Tap. Lastly, I’d just like to note that the building’s color scheme is being altered to Mariah’s tastes for the entirety of this weekend. I think that’s longer than they give some major holidays!
Okay, okay, I’ll go back to listening to the unstoppable earworm that is "Touch My Body" now. (All extravagant publicity grabs aside, I concede that E=MC2 is a pretty great album.) But I won’t be able to stop myself from looking up in reverent awe / amused disbelief if I happen to be anywhere near 34th St. this weekend. Will you?

Mariah is on top of her game and she’s never had to make a sex album or shock people by offending religions or showing violence in videos to sell album, she just uses her voice and that’s why I respect her unlike a certain international star…
Tacky, yes, but I think we should just be thankful that the FAA nixed her plans to have the entire building coated in sequins.

I don’t care WHO paid for the lights this weekend. It’s about the unprecedented sales in an industry that’s otherwise losing its grip on the buying public. This woman is a force to be reckoned with, and evidently there are some people out there who can’t handle it and have to resort to mudslinging (not pointing fingers at anyone specific here, just negative-commenters in general). Her talent is as phenomenal as it ever was. She’s one of the greats.

Dear Simon, what a backhanded complement your article is about Mariah! And for your information, it’s not like it’s the first time the management of the Empire State Building did this. They did it during the national holidays of some countries like Brazil and the Philippines with those nations colors displayed. And why can’t Mariah do this? what kind of gimmick do you want her to do? Put out a sex book? Anger Catholics, Jews, Muslims and Indians with provocative/controversial videos? We all know for a fact that EW doesn’t particularly like Mariah Carey just like in 2005 when her previous album was the best selling album of 2005 and you EW didn’t even mention her in your year-end entertainers list, even in the Music category!!!
