'Say Yes to the Dress' and other great cable shows we might have missed

Yesdress_lLast weekend, I was flipping channels and stumbled onto TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress, an unscripted show that takes you inside NYC’s famed Kleinfeld bridal shop. It was a marathon, and even though I’m not at all obsessed with weddings, it totally had its way with me: I wanted to know why consultant Claudia couldn’t make a sale. Why some grooms didn’t think it was bad luck to help shop for the gown (how common is this?!). And if the bride who’d waited hours to try on a dress she’d admired on another customer would finally get to wear it and love it. I wish I had caught this show — which debuted in October and won’t return until this summer — sooner. So this doesn’t happen to me again, please share the hidden cable gems that you’ve found below. My remote thanks you. Maybe others’ will, too.

I am a “The First 48″ on A&E Addict. Its so bad that I think the Memphis Homicide Dept. is my favorite “cast” on television of all time.

Jon & Kate Plus Eight on TLC. What an aMAAAzing family!

LA Ink is fabulous as well as What Not to Wear and Ace of Cakes on Food Network

There aren’t enough of the “Say Yes to the Dress” episodes, I’ve seen them all by now. I like “Parking Wars” on A&E, though. Some of those customers are ridiculous. “I didn’t pay my registration, so my license plate got suspended, so they towed my car, and now I have to pay for the registration and the plate and the court fees and the towing fees! Philly, you’re screwing people! Philly sucks! This is all Philly’s fault, not mine!” Uh… pay your registration next time, then?

TLC, A&E and the Food Network do have some of the best shows on TV. I love Iron Chef, Ace of Cakes, and Throw Down with Bobby Flay. The first 48 is another gem that many haven’t discovered yet. And Jon and Kate plus 8, although sometimes Kate annoys me, but I guess it I had to deal with 8 kids I wouldn’t be happy go lucky all the time either. And yet people complain that cable TV has nothing but violence. I beg to differ.

Room Service and Design Inc on Fine Living. The love the designer – Sarah Richardson – she is a real interior designer, the show isn’t a contest and the people getting their house redone aren’t the stars. Best part there are boatloads of episodes.

  • La La Love You

Ditto on “Say Yes To The Dress” and “Jon and Kate Plus 8″. I also give two thumbs up to “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”, “Ice Road Truckers” and “House Hunters”.

Clean House on the Style channel!! I love Niecy Nash soooo much. She’s hilarious and surprisingly wise.

My favorite episode involved a mother who SWORE the fabric was dress different from what she ordered. The mother was furious and demanded a new dress (which was impossible due to time). It took the unflappable Nitsa to figure it all out…something as simple as fabric cut across the grain and how it looked in a different light. It was nice to see Mom admit she was sooooo wrong.

Oh my god! The same thing happened to me this weekend. Nothing else was on and I figured Say Yes to the Dress wouldn’t be so bad. I watched it for 2 hours. My b/f was ready to rip his eyes out (even though you can tell he liked to comment on some of the ugly dresses).
