Are we ready for Jack Davenport to be a star in the U.S.? (Yes!)

Categories: Television, Waiting

Jackdavenportpirates_lLet’s hope it’s the moment fans of the British Coupling (and of Commodore Norrington in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, pictured) have been waiting for: Jack Davenport will star in the CBS drama Swingtown, premiering May 29. The show depicts the ’70s sexual and cultural revolution in a Chicago suburb — which sounds good for plot lines and bad for wardrobe and hair. In addition to Davenport, the show stars Deadwood’s Molly Parker and Melrose Place’s Grant Show (!). Is it finally time for Davenport, who also had memorable turns in The Wedding Date and The Talented Mr. Ripley, to break through in the States?

Yes I am! But, I really liked him in The Wedding Date, probably because I liked that movie.

  • Sean

    He was brilliant in Coupling.

  • Joslyn Hansen

Jack Davenport is DREAMY! I’ve been waiting for Swingtown ever since the upfronts, just to see more of him. Wonder if he’ll keep his British accent or have to use an American one?

  • Antoinette

Yes, I am so ready for Jack Davenport to be a star!!! Especially after the pathetic way they killed of Norrington. They took him out like he was a chump, his character deserved better than that.

  • Antoinette

I meant to say killed “off” course, not killed “of”. It’s too early in my day for good spelling. ha

  • yay

I’ve loved him since This Life, it’s about damn time America appreciated him

  • Ceballos

I like Davenport…but I also like Steve Coogan, Robbie Williams, Richard E. Grant, and an entire laundry list of Brits who just never clicked with U.S. audiences.
Here’s hoping it’s different for Davenport. I never watched “Coupling”, but I really liked the way he elevated a potential nothing role in the “Pirates” franchise, and he was also rock solid in “The Talented Mr. Ripley.”

  • Snarf

    Not a moment to soon.

  • Martha

Yes, yes, yes…hope he does break through. Ceballos, he was great in “Pirates” and “Ripley” but put “Coupling” on your Netflix list. I’ve seen every episode numerous times and I still laugh just as hard as the first. Great stuff. Looking forward to “Swingtown,” bad hair and all.

YAY! OMG I love him! Everytime I watch the Wedding Date, I forget that’s that him, I always think, “I love him! He looks so familiar!” and then I IMDB him and remember he’s Norrington. And then i love him more. I’ll have to check out the other things he’s been in and I can’t wait for this new show!

  • sje

I loved Norrington, esp in the 2nd movie when he was all scruffy and bitter. *sigh* Say what you will about POTC, but those guys (and gal) provide some serious eye candy.

  • Sailor

    Love him. Love Coupling.

I’m sorry to disappoint everyone but “Swingtown” is so getting cancelled after a few episodes. I also saw it during upfronts and unless they tone down the raciness, the old people who love CBS are gonna lose it when they see this.
    Love Jack Davenport tho!

I love Jack Davenport – I hope that this show is a success or at least gets him a prominent showing here in the US!

  • Katie

Love, love, love Coupling and Jack Davenport… and Kate Isitt, Ben Miles, Sarah Alexander and Richard Coyle…. not so much Gina Bellman, though…

Jack Davenport was in a one seasoned show on BBC called ‘THIS LIFE’ about a bunch of lawyers living together in one house, a very brilliant show, but for some strange reason there was only one season, if ya ever get a chance to watch it, it’s a must, perhaps on DVD or write to BBC America to show it again!

  • wildecat

I LOVE Jack Davenport, but I must say I have absolutely no interest in seeing him in some show set in Chicago unless he’s cast as, like, a visiting professor from England. The accent is a major portion of his overall yumminess!! I don’t think I’d like him as much with a fake American accent.

  • Conor

my mistake, I just IMDBed him and THIS LIFE was on for 2 seasons, 21 episodes over all, but it should have kept going. can’t believe it’s over 10 years since it was on the air!

  • jana

he’s brilliant in coupling & brilliant as norrington. he clearly has quite a range! oh how i hope swingtown does well. i’ll be waching it!! i do love him so!

  • Jennifer

American TV and I have now seen eye to eye. Thank you CBS!

  • Peggy

Absolutely yes! Jack Dav was so woefully underused in the PotC franchise. I hope he becomes incredibly famous. :)

  • Amy

YES!!! And Whoo-hoo! I love Jack Davenport, and while I never watched Deadwood I liked Molly Parker in Iron Jawed Angels.

  • PJ

Never! Jack Davenport has a way of making every line reading seem like a complaint. He’s a dishrag. Now, his mother, Maria Aitken, who played John Cleese’s shrewish wife in “A Fish Called Wanda”–SHE was worth keeping around.

  • Jamie

YES! I loved him as James in POTC — he added bite to a role that could’ve been just another Stuffy English Soldier, and was even good in the sequels, despite the undignified ways Norrington was treated.
He was also great in “Coupling,” and I can’t wait to see him in “Swingtown” before it inevitably gets canceled.

Ok…I will probably never watch this show although not because of him. But I do have to say that Jack Devenport becoming a name in the U.S. especially if he looks like he did during most of the second PoTC would be just dandy!

  • Diana

I remember watching Coupling before seeing the first POTC and falling in love with Davenport’s character (and watching to marry a Brit just like him). Then when POTC came out, I flipped out. You don’t even want to know my reaction to The Wedding Date :) I don’t watch CBS but I will definitely tune in to this.

  • Germaine St. Clair

YES YES YES!!! I have been a devoted fan of Coupling because of Davenport’s superb acting. We need to see more of him in the states.
*Other actors that should become stars in the states:
    (1) Matthew Goode
    (2) Robert Pattinson

  • Joy

Oooooh, I am psyched! I think the man was one of the best things about the PofC franchise. I’ll have to check out Coupling to see what it’s like; had no idea he was part of that cast.

  • eel8

YES!! And not only him, the whole cast of Coupling needs their break in the US. They are all fantastic on the show.

  • CentreChick

This has me so stoked – why oh why can I not program my dvr to tape this NOW?
