According to our current homepage poll, only 16 percent of you consider Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro the must-see comedy of the spring. But what’s your gut telling you about his summer offering Step Brothers (below)? Ferrell and John C. Reilly play new step brothers, forced to share a bedroom and make each others’ lives hell until they realize that if they were chicks, they’d both sleep with John Stamos. Then, they’re forced to grow up and find jobs because their parents want them out of the house in a month. (That may not be the exact correlation, but you get the point.) The first time I watched the trailer, I thought it was pretty funny. The second time, I remembered that PSA EW did awhile back asking men in Hollywood to grow up already. Have we always had this many ManBoy comedies, or what is it about this generation that makes them tap that well again and again? Discuss.

Looks like another piece of mindless Hollywood sh*t to me! But then again, so does every other Will Ferrill movie!
I don’t know, but last year I slept with a 50-year-old man who talked like Woody Allen and insisted all the pretty boys said he looked 35. He wore a puka-shell necklace. So there may be something to this immaturity thing being widespread. Apocalypse now, please and thank you.
Watching “Car Poolers” the other night my wife asked me what the deal was with Marmaduke, the slacker 22 year old who lives at home with mom and has no job.
IMHO, pop culture reflects what’s going on as a whole. I’m a 31 y/o, yet many of my peers rent apartments with roommates, despite college degrees and well paying office jobs. Many of them waste all their money on carry out and dry cleaning because they can’t cook or wash. Shucks, even the President lived with his parents until he was 40.
Us Genxers and GenYers weren’t raised to be independent. We were raised believing we’re special and deserved to be spoiled. Enabling parents used ADHD and Ritalin as excuses for bad behavior, and suddenly nothing was ever the fault of the individual.
The result? Bald men in bars who think they’re still in college and slacker movies where the slacker never grows up but still gets rewarded at the end.
just another mindless Will Ferrell piece of trash. Hey Ep, maybe you could get off your soap box now and join the rest of us.
We are suffering from Will Ferrell Burnout…All his movies look/feel/seem the same (except where he was the subject of Emma Thompson’s book, whatever the name of that movie was)…
Can’t he take a vacation, go away and come back with something original and funny? He’s turned into the Jim Carrey of the 2000’s…
I think this might be funny, but I am getting a little tired of Will Ferrall playing the immature, dumb guy (John C. Reilly should also be careful). One of the reasons that I want to see Semi-Pro (rated R) is because I can handle these characters if they talk and act like real people (see Old School) and the movie isn’t neutered for a PG-13 audience. Hopefully, these movies will stop getting made so frequently before they turn into the god awful parody movies which have returned for some unknown reason.
Mary Steenburgen is not old enough to have given birth to anyone in this movie.
I suppose, if you’re a 14 year old boy (in mind or in body) who smokes a lot of weed, Ferrell is quite a hoot. For everyone else, not so much.
Will Farrell movies are never on my “must-see” list and likely never will be.
Ouch. Everyone seems to hate this. I actually think it looks kind of funny. I won’t see it in the theater, but maybe rent. I think what’s funny about it is that it’s poking fun at the man-boy boom. It’s not being serious about this sort of phenomenon being ok–it’s making fun of these man-boys who have been living with their parents without responsibilities.
I agree with the immature, dumb guy comment because if anyone has seen “Stranger than Fiction”, the dude has some awesome acting chops! As for the preview of his current film, I only laughed when he tried to fight a bear. “Jackie Blue!!”
Lighten up all ready.
We can’t all love all the indie Juno type films
I blame the success of “the 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up” all men are potrayed with arrested development issues all women are shrill and want marriage/babies etc.
I know he’s you’re coverboy this week, but I went to a press screening of SEMI PRO Monday night, and it just reminded me why I refuse to watch TALLADEGA NIGHTS or BLADES OF GLORY. I admit, the viral videos with pearl were great, but SEMI PRO along with ALL of Ferrell’s movies (besides ELF & OLD SCHOOL) are just complete moronic garbage that makes me scratch my head when I hear the box office numbers the Monday after they open! I even went & got retarded drunk at happy hour the day ANCHORMAN opened and I still was like, THATS IT? But I am happy to see that most EW.com bloggers already know SEMI PRO is a big stinker from the poll on the home page! Not one memorable performance in it, in fact I hope the movie reviewers question why Maura Tienry’s character is even in the script! POINTLESS! Big OL STINKER!
So, it looks like I am alone here, but I think Will Ferrell can keep being ridic as long as he wants. I love independent movies, serious documentaries, and dramas, but sometimes you need the ocassional frat pack romp. And when people like Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn and Seth Rogen are that good at it, why not? Dismissing this kind of humor is like saying that the three stooges physicality and Shel Silverstien’s crass adult works no longer have a place in this world just because they did it so often. If it makes you laugh, enjoy it…
Semi-Pro looks horrible (which is why it’s being released in February), but I just laughed my balls off!
My 16 year old and his best friend asked me to take them to Semi-Pro. Forgiving the mortification factor for some of the movie (any scene involving Woody Harrelson and Maura Tierney having dialogue together and/or sex), much of this movie was a rewarding funny stupid. I have a royal filthy mouth and I thought the language was over the top much of the time. The supporting cast led by Andre from Outcast and Will Arnett were excellent. You’ve got to watch dreck with the “in for a dime in for a dollar” sense of enthusiasm and release of intelligence. No, these movies are not classic or even admirable but they can provide laughs. No, they don’t raise anyone up or provide thoughtful commentary on the social condition – not everything needs to be “quality”. Plus, when a character has a near death experience and asks to stay in heaven because it’s “so fluffy”, I’ll give it a thumbs up.
The funniest part about Talladega Nights was the outtakes on the dvd between John C Reilly and Ferrell. Them doing improv together was funnier than anything in the movie.
