'Prison Break' recap: series finale

Prisonbreak313_lAnd then we came to an end. Or a season finale at least. So let’s be honest — who isn’t a little bit relieved? I for one, as a fan of Prison Break, began to see Monday nights as a burden. I watched out of loyalty to the show and duty to the job if nothing else. And maybe a mild crush on Chris Vance. But the last few weeks, let’s admit, have been right twaddle and though I don’t share in the belief that Fox should put us out of our misery and cancel the show, I do propose the following: Give us a few more episodes this summer to take Mike and Linc to a proper end.  And make them good. And I mean very good. Just keep Michael in Linc’s brown blazer. It’s smoking.

That said, let’s recap with a head count:

1. McGrady. As we all figured, minus a little setback on the road,he basically made a clean break. But did he and pops really need tomake a pit stop to party with the family 20 miles before crossing theColombian border? Don’t you think the cops are going to be questioninggranny and the cousins soon?

2. Sucre. What an upstanding guy this one turned out to be: He’swilling to be buried alive rather than sell out Mike and Linc. Luckily— or not — he escaped that fate and now he’s back in Sona wherearchenemy T-Bag (the dude that sold him out) is king.

addCredit(“Wentworth Miller and Jodi Lyn O’Keefe: Bill Matlock”)

3. Lechero, T-Bag, Bellick. Lechero was in a bad spot, bleeding outwith just T-Bag to rely on. He, of course, ended up getting smotheredby the double-crossing creep and I’ve practically forgotten about himalready. So now what’s T-Bag going to do with Sister Mary Frances andthe $50,000 bucks? How’s he going to keep up his prison-yard promise of“all cons are equal” to the Sona inmates and stay out of trouble?
4. Linc, R.J. and Sofia. Two things: First, so Linc’s falling forSofia, getting all mushy over her after she’s shot and ending the showin her hospital room with L.J., like a nice cute modern family. What Iwanna know is, what about Veronica? She couldn’t have died more than afew months ago, and don’t tell me that Linc still believes that she’s“missing.” He’s not that dopey. Second, was Gretchen’s henchmanaiming at Sofia or was he trying to shoot Whistler? I can’t tell. If itwas Whistler, was he trying to shut him up and why?
5. Gretchen, Alex, and Whistler: I knew Whistler and Alex were makinggoogly eyes at each other! Now Alex thinks it’s worthwhile to go(back?) to work for the company and up (once again?) against Michael?I wonder what they offered him. On the other hand, apparently they’reall in trouble over Whistler losing that book, since Gretchenpractically had a coronary when he mentioned that to her. And wethought what he had written in it was gobbledygook. It may not be thecoordinates, but something in it is worth something.
6. Michael: Being that Mike’s the series’ main character, it’s sad thatthere’s so little said about him in this episode: He’s still on hisrevenge trip, and now he’s driving down the Panama highway in a beat-upold car with a gun and an origami flower, trying to get to Whistler anda dude named Jason Lief.
7. Jason Lief: Okay, so he’s not a real character and may never show upon the show, but Whistler did have a surveillance report tailing one“Jason Lief.” What do we know? That he’s from Scottsdale, Arizona. Heonce walked southeast on 23rd street talking on his cell phone andholding a bagel. I think it’s time for some stunt casting again. I seeAidan Gillen in the part. What about you?

So that’s it. See you next fall for another (hopefully better) season.

I still love the show. I want at least one more full season so we can see Michael kill Gretchen (by be-heading her) and Linc hook up with Sophia and T-Bag finally get what he deserves. Poor Sucre I hope some how he can get out

  • Joel

The show was still solid this season. Nothing can top the first season and its first 12 episodes (I’m talking about for Prison Break itself, not comparing it to shows like Lost or Battlestar). Why someone would write an article begging for the cancelation of a show is beyond me. Change the channel and go watch American Gladiators or a crappy reality show. Let the rest of us enjoy Prison Break.

  • Gillian

Just a little correction: Lincoln knows Veronica is dead. He was on the phone with her when she was shot. And I think the season ended great, even though it had some slow and boring episodes. I would watch another season if Fox allows us to.

  • Corinne

That actualy was a good episode and got me back into it. Did Mahone/Susan/Whistler say something about Sara in the end? We were watching it on mute with closed captions because our kid just went to bed and we couldn’t tell who was saying it.

  • Michael

With the possible exception of “Weeds”, I’ve never seen a series go from really good to really awful as quickly as this one did in the third season. I honestly don’t know how I managed to get through this season, and I certainly won’t watch a fourth if there is one.

  • Brandon

Are ya’ll serious? This season finale was a great way to cap off a great season, no, it wasn’t season 1 or 2 but this is the best show to ever be on tv.

  • moonshake

what was with the use of “Llorlando” (exact same version as used in “Mulholland Drive”!) at the end of the epi? Is Prison Break going to turn in to a Lynchian universe? Is David Lynch taking over the helm next season? (we can only hope!)

  • AA

I don’t know if I could stand another full season (in jail, out of jail, in jail, out of jail, and on and on and on), but I would love to have a little mini wrap-up of say, 4 episodes in May?

  • EP Sato

WOAH. the series didn’t end? I loved season one but felt they needed to wrap it up by the end of Season 2. Instead they went to prison in Panama and the whole conspiracy story went bananas. I couldn’t bear myself to watch season 3 as it seemed the story’d streched misbelief beyond all possibility. But I’d sworn to watch the final episode of the show. Rather than close it out, Fox is really stretching this show one more season? Count me in with those who say this one trick pony needs to be taken out back and put out of its misery.

My fear is that we have seen the end of PB. And, if that’s the case, I am not happy with the finale.
I want the following: Gretchen to die(painfully if possible), Bellick and Sucre out of Sona, Mahone to find peace. Don’t care about the rest.
I really hope we get something in the fall (half a season, a two-hour wrap-up)- if, for nothing else, to tie up some of these plotlines. This season wasn’t great but we need closure. Another reason why I want more: I’m not ready to let go of T-Bag, Bellick and Mahone…memorable characters, terrific actors. Can we start an online petition? Or, maybe, can we send cases of nuts to FOX?

  • Melissa D.

I agree with Corinne that this was a good episode that made me appreciate the series again, but I don’t want to wait until the fall for them to wrap it up. Yes, Mahone mentioned Sarah at the end. He said that Susan/Gretchen was the weak link for what she did with Sarah. Does that mean she’s the weak link because she let Sarah live or because she went all psycho and put Sarah’s head in a box? I’m betting on the former.

  • Deanna

I thought it was awesome. Michael has to help Sucre and kill Gretchen or all is not right in the world! Seriously, I love Prison Break. I hope it comes back for another season or two, the possibilities are endless.

  • Deanna

It has to come back!!! Prison Break is so entertaining… What does fox have now? The Sara Conner Chronicles?? WHAT? Snooze.

  • t3hdow

I don’t fault anything but the writers strike for forcibly prolonging Prison Break (even the PB creators said season 3 is the definite endgame), so I’ll give the creators a little reprieve, if they decide only to make a mini season of 13 episodes or less (which easily covers the second half of season 3 without the strike). I still don’t love the show like I did with the first two seasons, but I demand some kind of closure. It would be a damn shame, not to mention ironic if the Fox execs, the very numskulls who forced PB’s creative team to crank out one more season too many, canceled this show from poor ratings.
Speaking of ironic, that MLK-style equality speech T-Bag made in Sona had me in stitches. That’s easily the most unintentionally funny thing I’ve heard all season.

  • Edgar

I still think Gretchen is HOT!!!!

I still think Gretchen is HOT!!!!

  • ?

I thought this season was good. If they cancel this show I’ll be really really disappointed.

  • To Brandon

“The best show to ever be on TV”? What are you smoking? Is it entertaining? For the most part, yes. But it is not even close to one of the best shows on TV THIS season, let alone ever.

  • Shabazz

Never has a show had such blatant disregard for basic continuity.
At the end of last episode Bellick was beaten within an inch of his life and left for dead, yet this episode he was running around without a scratch. What gives????

  • Diana

I really love Prison Break and Wentworth who is a great actor. It would be really sad if there was not a season 4. It is the only show that I watch which is on Fox, they would be hurting their network if they did not break this show back. This last episode still left so many unanswered questions.

  • Jim

i sometimes hate that i love this show, but i can’t survive mondays without it. i don’t care how contrived it gets, it always entertains me.

  • Laura

I stopped watching this lackluster season right after they brutally and unjustly killed off Sara. I tuned in last night and discovered that I hadn’t missed much. And the fact that they put sweet Sucre through such hell just proves that the writers have no respect for their characters – the people on this show hardly ever get what they deserve. And the fact that Bellick and Mahone are still alive proves that.
Just like when “Alias” killed off Vaughn, I think killing Sara was a fatal mistake for this show because it sucked the heart out of it. Personally, I think they need to put this show out of its misery, because the only way it could redeem itself right now is if, like “Alias”, it turns out somehow that the love interest – i.e. Sara – is not really dead and they bring her back. Otherwise, I really don’t care anymore.

  • rachel

I love prison break. It should definitely come back for another season. This season has made a few missteps, aka Sona, but it still has amazing characters, an excellent story, and heart in your throat excitement. This episode, along with the last two, was great and fits in perfectly with the other Prison Break seasons.

  • DanOregon

I say end this thing now. They’ve gotten too far away from the initial storyline. Whatever to the old guy who initiated the SONA thing? Whatever happened to the FBI wanting Mahone? And I never quite bought SONA as being a tough prison to escape. You’d think “the company” that has enough pull to kill a president could finagle a prisoner out of a ramshackle hoosgau.

  • Alice

I actually just very recently started watching it (curse you, strike!), and I would be incredibly disappointed if it was cancelled. Sure, it has plotholes elephants could fall through. True, the writers’ attempt to integrate the original title back into the show fell flat. Nevertheless, you can’t say it’s not one of the most addicting shows on television. And it has hot men. Lots of hot men. I vote they get to do another half a season to a season to wrap things up. Kellerman and Sara should come back… alive preferably.

  • Debbie

Thoroughly enjoy Prison Break!! Would like to see it continue.

  • Why oh why

Prison Break first season was amazing, easily one of the best. But since the first escape, the show has become more and more ridiculous. The “Company” and Sona are just stupid attempts to make a hit show last longer than it should. PB should have ended in two seasons with Lincoln innocented, without the need for a vast secret organization or a panamean jail where everyone speaks English. Let this show die.

  • pc

I am sick and tired of the networks not wrapping up their series. Prison Break better be back for at least a few episodes to wrap everything up, or I will not look at Fox again.
