Re-channelling 'Medium': a recap

Categories: Medium, Mini TV Watch

Medium_lHeeeeey, how’s it goin’? (Or, for the four of you still speaking in LOLCat-ese, “O, hai!”) It’s been awhile, yeah? Me, I’ve just been doing what I do, y’know — got a new couch (love!), new haircut (do not want!), and spent way too much money at a clothing chain named for third-world dictatorships. But you! You haven’t changed a bit in the (what’s it been?) month since we last saw each other. Whatever you’re doing, you should bottle it.

So yay, Medium’s back — with an episode directed by Patricia Arquette’s brother David, no less — and it’s about damn time. To celebrate, I’m boozing it up with a Wyder’s peach cider, made by our neighbors to the north (it really is true what they say — they are so very nice). But before I could enjoy my fruity buzz, there was Allison’s Dream of Random Exposition and — crap — another kiddie-in-peril scenario. Anybody else get the sinking feeling that as long as Cynthia Keener (Anjelica Huston) is in our lives, Medium will continue to be tot-torture-of-the-week fare?

Oh well, at least this has a nice twist: The kidnap victim in question is deaf, so Allison woke up unable to hear. The doctor said it was some sort of sudden-onset condition, but we all know it’s psych(ic)-somatic, just like that time she had "I Will Survive" stuck in her head until she solved the case. Full disclosure: I’m hearing impaired (though far from deaf), so I kinda sympathized. Especially when she missed conversational cues. Especially when people started barking at her (honey, if she can’t hear her own damn screams, how do you figure she’s gonna hear yours?). But especially when Allison told Joe over the phone, “If you’re there: Sweet dreams, sleep tight, and know that I love you. And if you’re not there: Sweet dreams, sleep tight, and know that I love you.” See, now that she can’t hear, all of Allison’s other senses are heightened — especially her sense of ooey gooey luuuuuv.

Enough with the mush, though, because this episode was really about hard truths.

Hard truth No. 1: You gotta jack with kidnappers. Change the rules!Negotiate! Screw them on the asking price! It’s one of the mostprofound lessons Mel Gibson’s ever taught us — besides how much the ladies love having their sweater meat compared to fructose.

Hard truth No. 2: Rex Van de Kamp (Steven Culp) is always gonna be the morally shady dude. He’s in that class with Adrian Pasdar, Michael Emerson, and William Fichtner — youdon’t know that they’re the bad guy, but the odds are against them. So nohuge surprise that he set up the whole stepdaughter kidnapping, onlytoo eager to trade her blood for the red ink his company ishemorrhaging.

Hard truth No. 3: You do NOT cross Anjelica Huston. I could say thatthis was particularly evident in the part where she trained her piece(Glock? .45? Damned if I know) on Step-Daddy Dearest and put it in nouncertain terms, “Just so you know, it would give me enormous pleasureto put one of these right between your eyes, and another through thecenter of your chest.” But honestly, staying on Anj’s good side justseems like a practical life lesson.

So what’d you think? Is Little Brother Arquette getting good at thisdirecting thing? How great was it to see Nancy Travis again? Isn’tpeach the best of all the Wyder’s ciders? And who thinks it’s adorablethat Marie is reading (and that they haven’t replaced the kids, soapopera-style, with hot, demographically desirable teen actors)?

I didn’t realize that David Arquette directed this episode. He did a good job… I thought the scene where she called Joe was great, but she asked him if he still loved her. Why wouldn’t he? He’s not showing anything like that…

“Medium” has its flaws and can be predictable at times, but I really like the fact that Patricia Arquette actually looks like a real human being (rather than a skinny, super-hot glam girl who doesn’t lookm like any suburban mom I’ve ever seen). And that the kids are in the same vein, they look like real kids from my neighborhood. Makes the show seem much more believable. Let’s hear it for Real People!

So glad that Medium was finally back, stupid NBC. Can the Dubois family get any cuter? Well at least next week’s episode doesn’t seem to have any “tot-torture”, when that kidnapper started kicking the little deaf girl I started panicking and thought we had another child murder on our hands again. Can’t wait for the next episode!

    Loved it!
Another great “trick” gives you more insight into what life is like for other people. Great directorial effort by Ms. Arquette’s bro. She just knocks me out too, her frustration at not being able to hear was very palpable.
Also loved when she saw Scanlon in the car and we could not see him but we knew it was him from just the look on Alison’s face. And one more thing to love — the return of Devalos next ep!!! Missing him much, he’s a very important part of the series to me.

Oh, I’m so glad you mentioned Nancy Travis. I thought that was her and I’ve always thought she makes everything she’s in infinitely better. For that matter, that goes for Patricia Arquette and Angelica Huston as well. Nancy Travis deserves a show of her own. Glenn Gordon Caron–write something for her please.

My favorite scene was after Allison screamed, hoping she could hear her own voice. As the family goes away, Bridget says, “Don’t scream again mommy, it scares us.” Then Allison responds, “Bye baby, I love you too” or something like that. Bravo to the writer who came up with that. That really made me realize how much you miss when one of your senses is gone.

Poorly written recap. (YO!) Especially for a PopWatch item.

  • BassSinger

    Thank goodness it is back!

  • Gringo

I tuned in for the first time when this season started (yes, I have the writer’s strike to thank, as my options were limited), and I became addicted immediately. I’ve been working my way through the back catalog and I must say that I agree about the children not being replaced. It’s the most believable family on television. From their physical appearance down to the mess their house is. And yes, David is getting better at this directing thing and my favourite scene was the whole silent screaming, too.

  • James

Loved the ep (but, yes, let’s not make all the victims children) and loved the show and family from the start. But, sorry Gringo, they’re the SECOND most believable family on TV. The first is the Taylors of Friday Night Lights!

  • Dawn

Nice recap. Loved this episode. Patricia Arquette was phenomenal as always, maybe even moreso than usual, and yes, li’l bro David did a fantastic job directing this. I particularly loved the screaming scene and Allison’s phone call to Joe. Nothing against the Taylors and FNL, but these two are the most perfect couple on television, hands down. And I love those girls! Kudos to Glenn Caron for getting Anjelica Huston. What a coup! Love her character. And her last line to the stepdad had me rolling! “Fine, deny a woman a little happiness.” Lmao!
And I love that Patricia Arquette is a real, normal looking woman and doesn’t try to look like the stereotypical Hollywood actress. She is not only beautiful, but extremely talented. And David is becoming a great director. What a talented family! And they are so cool too!

  • Dawn

And I am SO happy that Medium is back!! YAAAAYYYYY!!!
