Snap judgment: Mariah Carey's new single, 'Touch My Body'

Touchmybody_lYou’ve waited so patiently, Mariah Carey fans; nearly three years since the release of 2005’s The Emancipation of Mimi. Behold, then, the Mariah Motherlode: Not only was her upcoming album’s title released today (it’s E=MC², physics fans!), but a sneak peak at a new track dropped online; listen here.

It’s not a bad mid-tempo jam — sunny, flirty, and syncopated just the way Mimi likes it; basically, classic Carey. But allow us to offer one quibble: What the eff is going with this recent Diva Cougar Complex? Janet just dropped an album full of bathroom-wall come-ons, and now Mariah, who used to be all, "I had a vision of love,"  is cutting straight to "TOUCH MY MONKEY! TOUCH IT!" Are we being overly Amish here, or would it be nice to retain a little mystery? Your comment board awaits!

I didn’t think this track was bad when I heard it…but I was expecting something a little more stronger club edge to compete with Janet (Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty)…it’s was okay…I hope she def. has something even bigger and better on that new album if she wants to live up to the expectations of “Mimi”…
all things aside..it’s a good track sure to entertain..just not her greatest…

I love Mariah’s voice but this song seems so fake. Her music always sounds unauthenic. Whats up with that?

  • Snarf

Ok I’m the furtherest thing from a prude their is, but um, “ick”. Then again Mariah never did anything for me (musicaslly or otherwise) so mine may not be an unbiased opinion.

I agree. Janet’s song is nasty. this wasn’t squeaky clean either though. the artists can’t find a better way to get across their message than just blurting out “touch me there, F*$% me here”? really? kinda gross. let’s leave a little to the imagination.
Not that i’m expecting classy lyrics from either one of the ladies here, but ….come on.

This song is very disappointing. It’s very forgettable. Mariah can do better. At least Janet’s song can pack a mean dancefloor at the club.

  • D

I’m not really encouraged to even listen to the song, based on her nearly nude cover. Ick, indeed.

You guys are so wrong. All of the negative comments seem to be coming mostly from people who are making judgements without actually listening to the track. COME ON, people. This is a fun, cool song, and it’s obviously tongue-in-cheek. Mariah’s not taking herself too seriously. “I will hunt you down???” You’re supposed to smile at this, not get turned on.

quibble swhibble leah g! well trutufully this is just an okay song. and it sounds like kelly’s part in dilemma with the “my boo” thingy and come to think of it, it sounds like janet and nelly’s flop duet some months ago with all those drapes! anyway go Mimi!! Go 2008 album!! Go grammy payback!!

  • Silv

    Um, no thanks.

  • SallyinChicago

Who cares about the lyrics, the beat is slammin’….you can slow dance and waltz around the floor with that beat…I feel “Randy Jackson” in that beat….I don’t even hear the lyrics….I hear a great mid-tempo beat and Mariah being Mariah….

  • N

I like it. It’s a nice, bouncy, breezy track. Bring it on Mimi.

  • Adam

This is so addicting. Love this.

  • NL

  • TommyG

I LOVE IT!!! its a different sound from mariah but she doesnt push it too far even though she could if she wanted i mean shes MARIAH CAREY and shes having fun with it its not like a full on sex song its a fun sexy-flirtatious song and once again i love it!

  • bruno

Oh, come on. Who HASN’T touched it?

  • deb

    i love it.

  • jole

i think this song is not going on charts. songs like these nowadays dont chart.
its a bit TOO SOFT. yah its a bit janet, remember call on me janet’s song flop. considering this song dont even have a guest rapper, mariah chose the wrong track, this is an ok song but not what ive expected.
    im a bit dissappointed

  • Heleno

Anyone else a little bit freaked out by the chilling way she says “I will hunt you down”? Sounds a bit bunny boiler don’t you think?

  • Thad

lite and catchy but a leadoff single, no way. This lame, tame song sounds like an unfinished demo.

  • Delon

Another bizarre album title from Mariah. This is such a light and tame song. Is it really the lead single? Hopefully the rest of the album is much stronger.

  • JoeC

Ah, the Queen is back! Now the year has really started! The song is great, her voice sounds spectacular as it always does and the countdown to The Chick release is underway. Man, am I excited! I have been buying records since the 70’s, and there has never been an artist I’ve liked more, not Led Zep, Elton John, Prince, the Bangles, etc…Mariah rules! Welcome back Mimi!

  • Alison

“are we being a little too Amish here…” love it.

  • ok

I kind of like the song, which surprised me because I’m not really a fan of hers. But, if Wentworth Miller were in the video then it would be HOT!

  • Taz

Perfect song for Valentine’s Day. Ask the person you love to “Touch My Body.”

  • Kristen

Heleno, the “I will hunt you down” freaked me out too- it ruined the flirty fun vibe of the song.

  • Bobby

I really like it. It’s very catchy and funny :) )

  • jason

hell to the yeah!! perfect first song, light and smooth, so you know the second single will kill. i CANNOT wait for tax day, i’m gettin a refund AND mimi. hot damn (will they edit that?) anyway, lovin this song

  • GeeMoney

Not a bad song, but it’s not going to be a big hit. I’m suprised she made this her first single.

  • jeandre

I like this song, it’s a grower, the more i hear it the more i like it. A very ladi back song, fun, with summer vibe, with catchy chorus. It’s sure gonna be hit.
Can’t wait for the video clip.
