I haven’t read The Ruins, Scott Smith’s best-selling novel, but watching the trailer (below) for the April movie, I understand what Gillian Flynn says in her review: "Reading Scott Smith is like having a rope tied firmly round yourmiddle, as you’re pulled on protesting tiptoes toward a door markedDOOM. The horror is in plain sight; there is no doubt things will end badly — the signs are everywhere."
Should I be as frightened of this film as I am? And for those of you who have read the novel, does it look like the movie will do it justice?

This was the most overhyped book of whatever year it came out and it was horrible! Totally predictable and boring. If you can’t figure out what the ending will be in about 10 minutes I would be shocked. This movie is probably as exciting as watching paint dry.
the book was slightly scary and then just got stupid and repetitious. it was like a long short story that wouldn’t end.
nowhere near the level of ‘a simple plan.’ from the trailer, it looks like they aren’t straying too far from the book. great set-up and premise and then just a big snooze and a WTF…
My guess is that the movie is going to have a different ending than the book, because I don’t think Hollywood would regard the book as having a very commercial ending. Also, most of the “action” in the book happens in the last 50 pages, but there’s 250 pages before that where it’s mostly college brats sitting around being bratty.
I loved A Simple Plan because it was about one of the oldest themes in literature: how a “normal” person can become capable of evil. The Ruins had nowhere near the same moral weight.
Man that was one boring book…and my guess is that the movie will be just as bad!
Well, I guess I’m the idiot that dug the book. Although there are some things they could change for the movie*, (please don’t have the Big Bad talk, that was just silly), I thought it was pretty decently paced and it held my interest enough that I read it in two sittings.
*Based on the trailer, it looks like they did change a few things, not only what occurs to which characters, but [possible spoiler alert], if you look at the frame at the 53 second mark, it looks like they added a scene, probably to the ending.
I found the book to be such a huge disappointment I find myself not really caring if the movie is scary or not. Either way, I won’t be heading to the theaters to see it.

Wow, I didn’t think everyone hated the book this much. I feel exactly like Gillian Flynn, I couldn’t put it down and thought the whole thing was terrifying. Even more so when the Big Bad talked, actually. The movie also looks pretty intense and I think if they build the mood right, it doesn’t matter that not a lot happens. You should definitely be afraid.
I guess I get the mixed reviews (though I loved the book; it scared me silly) but I can’t figure out why those who hated it are so vehement and angry about it.
I, too, enjoyed the book and I am looking forward to the movie. There were some scenes in the book that were downright scary and I enjoyed the character interactions. I was pleasantly surprised to find out about the movie.
I thought the book was very scary. I had never heard of it before I read it, so I guess I wasn’t put off by “hype.” I might go see the movie — but I agree that I’d be surprised if they didn’t change the ending.
Well, I was barely on the like side of the like/hate line about this book as I read it. But, after I finished it, I got to thinking about it and it scared the bejeezus out of me. I haven’t watched the trailer yet, mainly because I’m too scared.
This is one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Why would anyone make a movie out of it? Why? Anyone who sees this movie is a fool.
I agree with those who thought the book was ridiculous. I think I threw it across the room when I was done.
Call me jaded, I guess. I read the book, which I enjoyed, but I thought it was a little silly and hardly scary. I’ll probably see the movie, though.
