Happy 50th Birthday, Smurfs!

Papa_lAm I really writing this post? Yes, yes I am. (And while Wolf from American Gladiators is down the hall, howling, in the EW offices, no less.)

So today, the Smurfs kicked off their 50th birthday festivities in Belgium, the home of their late creator, Pierre Culliford, who introduced them in a comic strip in 1958. The article I linked to talks about Papa and Smurfette going on a "European birthday tour," which will also include stops in Paris and Berlin. Naturally, I wondered what the U.S. is doing to honor them. It appears we’ve got season 1 of the ’80s cartoon series hitting DVD on Feb. 26 and an animated feature in the works. Is that enough? I suppose Saturday Night Live‘s Smurfette Show parody didn’t count.

Happy Birthday! 50 years of asexuality must be very boring, though.

Ah yes…slow news day it is…

I used to collect Smurfs as kid. 80′s cartoons were so much fun.

I was obsessed with collecting the 2 inch figurines as a child. Having gone back and seen an episode recently, I cannot believe my parents let me watch cause those writers were on some serious ganja. Or should I say Smurfijuana.

Oh my god! Happy birthday smurfs! I am so happy you are receiving this honor.

The Smurfs are originally Belgian? Well that explains a lot. I’m Belgian too–that explains a lot about me as well, right?

Smurf you all! I smurf the Smurfs! I still have a VHS tape recorded from Saturday morning TV. It makes for a great drinking game. Every time they say Smurf, DRINK!

I had the album “The Smurfs All-Time Show” as a kid. It was so good. Some of them were smurfified versions of traditional kids’ songs (like “Old Papa Smurf” instead of “Old MacDonald”), but some were originals that were kinda sad or touching, like “Space Smurfs.” Not on CD, but I just checked and you can download it illegally. I’m just sayin’. (Kids will love it).

Do kids even know who the smurfs are anymore? *sigh*
I had a record with the smurfs and uncle reamus, I believe. Odd combination, in retrospect.
