I have no problem with someone being one-note, as long as I like that note. And I’m fine with Will Ferrell making sports spoof after sports spoof as long as they’re funny. (See: that mealtime grace scene in Talladega Nights. Do not see: Kicking & Screaming.)
That said, Ferrell’s upcoming basketball diary, Semi-Pro (opening Feb. 29), worries me. In the G-rated trailer below, I found great costuming, as always, but only one thing to laugh at (Ferrell on his stomach, calling for the bear).

Neither one was funny. And was that SNL’s Kristin Wiig doing the exact same “safe word” joke from her Nancy Pelosi skit? C’mon! Palamino for Spumoni? They’re not even that different! Will Ferrell’s recent movies have had a joke to funny ratio of 30:1. I doubt this one will even muster that. Plan to avoid.
The biggest disappointment is that they didn’t even need to make anything up in orderl to make a great comedy about the ABA. This looks like it was a straightforward adaptation of the story, then Will Ferrel got attached in order to drum up interest, and took over the movie, adding slapstick that had no place in the original script.
NOT FUNNY. Please stop these Will Ferrel “comedies”. Also, the bear is knd of tasteless after the tiger incident. That will probably be cut from the trailer.

Maybe I’m just a silly man who enjoys stupid things but I plan on watching this movie. People told me Rickey Bobby and Blades of Glory looked bad and they were hilarious so I’ll take my chances on Will Ferrel. Atleast he’s not Ben Stiller.
