NBC's David Gregory is my (funky) new hero

Say you’re hanging around in your office at, oh, 7:30 a.m., and you look up to notice that the one and only Mary J. Blige is like three feet away from you, going to town on her new jam "Just Fine" with a full band and a pair of sassy backup singers. What are you gonna do? Stand there silently and focus on your work? No way! If you’re someone who I respect in any way as a human being, you’re gonna groove at least a little tiny bit. NBC White House correspondent David Gregory certainly did when he found himself in this very situation during yesterday morning’s Today Show:

And yet some curmudgeonly people are getting on Gregory’s case! The Huffington Post is all, "David Gregory Sets White People Back 60 Years" and "Watch him bust an awkward and uncomfortable move." I beg to differ: The hands-in-the-air shimmying move that Gregory busted is nothing if not indubitably comfortable. The HuffPo crew also accuses Gregory of getting down to a Chris Brown tune last summer — which, of course, he did (check him out around 3:08) — as if they never so much as bobbed their head to "Run It"?!

Full disclosure: I might have a slight bias in this matter, as a dorky white journalist who will totally dance to some Mary J (or Chris Brown) given the opportunity. But I hereby call for a formal apology to David Gregory by anyone who slighted his spontaneous dancing. And I so hope that he finds a way to work those moves into the next White House press conference. Don’t you, P-Dubs?

All I can say is David Gregory has no shame in his game! Let him get his groove on…this world would be a whole lot better if more people did that! Play on playa!!

  • Andie

I’ve seen way worse “white-man-dancing” than that.

I’m just happy to see a middle aged white guy who’s comfortable enough in himself to dance when sober. And frankly, dance pretty well–he was on beat and having a great time! Who freakin’ cares? Too many people are worried about what others think, and they miss out on expressing joy. The world would be a better place if more people just danced when they felt like it.

David Gregory always grooves during the musical guests, which is great! Why shouldn’t a journalist show some personality and express himself? As much as I love Matt Lauer, you’d never see him strut his stuff.

Shake it, D.G.! And honestly, he wasn’t bad at all. Anyway, it’s a morning show, people need a pleasant wakeup.

  • Sms

pretty fly for a white guy!

  • Shirley

    I just became his fan!!!

  • boredinbklyn

I think he looks like he’s having fun, and he’s on beat which is a major plus!…..however that song is atrocious!

  • Jakeem

At least he’s not as stiff as a certain someone he covers in his regular job!

  • KG

He was WORKING it! I would totally get down with him in a club but something tells me from that first twirl that I would be the only female in said club if you catch my meaning…

  • skye

aww, thats so cute! Those old-heads need to stop hatin! I liked his little turn-around thing :)

  • Cleo

Love it!!! Dance like nobody’s watchin’!! Personally, I got no respect for anyone who doesn’t groove every now & then. Rock-On Bro! Rock-On! By the way, is MJ Blige kickin’ some major tail or what? She makes me so proud of the all-mighty uterus! Go girl!!!

    >>I’m just happy to see a middle aged white guy who’s comfortable enough in himself to dance when sober. <<
Are we're sure about the sober part? ;)
He's having fun and the folks at the HuffPo need a big old "Lighten up, Francis". You shake that groove thing, DG!

  • Jelana

Saw it live — I thought he was pretty bland before then, but then he got all jiggy with it. Very fun. I only hope he doesn’t have teenage kids.

  • MK

I’m not white, or a guy–and I thought David Gregory rocked it! The man had moves! Can’t wait to see his next performance!

  • Jyoti

Oh screw the Huffington Post, he was totally grooving and completely in rhythm. Are they so old, pathetic and out of it that they can’t see obvious rhythm? I was expecting to see some variation of the Elaine Dance from Seinfeld but color me surprised to see DG actually busting some sharp moves.
Good for you DG. Like someone else said, keep dancing like nobody’s watching.

  • Jen

I’m with Dana J. on this one – ain’t no shame in his game! Clearly the man knows how to have a good time, and that’s a lesson we all need to learn around this time of year. :-)

  • B Ro

This totally justifies my crush on D.G. If only Anderson Cooper got up and shook his thang every once in awhile.

  • Kerry

Honestly, Simon, you’re my new Slezak. You are to hip hop and R&B what Slezak is to Ugly Betty. You crack me up.
And, I think inadvertent public dancing is totally acceptable. I myself busted a move from JT’s “My Love” video at the bus stop this february. I got some funny looks, but sometimes you just can’t help yourself.

  • Calvin

THAT was awesome. My week has been made. Keep it up D.G.!!!!

  • bonnylass

DG rocks! You have to be a seriously miserable person to be offended by that. I’m glad we all seem to be in agreement.

  • monica

as a black/hispanic person, i have to say that that’s the best non-professionally trained white dancing i’ve ever seen and he should give lessons to all of his friends. and on a side note: why the hell did they air that? do they not have any respect for our country’s politicians? lol

  • bluegirl

    dude totally rocked!
i think it’s great to see someone enjoying music, it doesn’t matter who they are or what type of music it is. it’s even better when it breaks stereotypes.
he was enjoying himself and he had more rhythm than most average people.

  • td

I totally have a white boy crush! I was already lovin’ DG for the way he went after Hillary Clinton this week…and then he totally worked it on the dance floor. He looked like he was thinking, “Mary is my girl! This is my jam!” Love him!

  • whimsey

I never though Mr. Gregory was the best looking guy, kind of a monkey face, when covered the White House beat. But since he has been on the Today Show, I have found him to be a very funny, self deprecating gentleman – than can clearly shake his arse with the best of the. Carry on Mr. Gregory, carry on.

  • Sina

That was some of the best dancing I have seen from a non performing person in daytime tv. He had the beat and I LOVED when he turned around dancing. He has a fan in me! Anyone who is hating is just mad they can’t dance.

  • Maria

So the HuffPo has NEVER seen Tom Cruise dance? Because that is a crime if there ever was one for “White Man Dancing.” PAINFUL to watch.

  • mkatti

Boys just want to have fun. The Huffie people need to get a clue.

  • Mich

Dancing or not, David Gregory is awesome. If only he could replace Meredith, and I could start every morning with both him and Lauer!

  • Lala

DG just became my new favorite part of the Today show! LOVE IT!!
