Another holiday season, another reason to remember how much you love figure skating specials. (Oh, you know you do.) We’ll be sitting down with Brian Boitano on Friday afternoon to chat about his latest offering, NBC’s Dec. 22 Brian Boitano Skating Spectacular. (Picture Viktor Petrenko and Steven Cousins skating while Barry Manilow sings songs from the ’70s live… and enjoy.)
We’ll also be asking Boitano the best of the questions you submit. So remember where you were when you first saw him perform that "Missing You" chair routine (below) and wondered if it was the best use of a prop on ice — ever. Ponder his opinions of the current competitive and professional figure skating scenes (and Blades of Glory). Pitch him an idea for his next TV special, which will be his production company’s 20th. And think of a clever way to ask him about "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" (As always, just keep it clean — not like that South Park clip we just linked to.)

I love Brian. My sister in law insists that he wore a “pad” to make his posterior look so fine. Is it true?
Did he want to ram a blade through the gap in Petrenko’s teeth as much as I did. I mean come on, all the guy did was pose! And he didn’t appear to be gay. What a black mark on “men’s” figure skating.
I have a more serious question (at least I think its more serious than whether he wore a pad on his butt). Anyway, when I watch figure skating competitions these days it seems the top men are very graceful and quite frankly effeminate in their skating. There is a Russian with blonde hair (name escapes me) in particular who is very androgenous. I always felt that Brian Boitano and Kurt Browning were able to be graceful and beautiful on the ice while still being masculine and strong. What does Brian think of this issue? Does it matter?
Perhaps it’s because they are gay!!! Brian is gay!! Kurt is not. Petrenko did not look effeminate. I think you are thinking of Pleshenko. He is a hermaphrodite I think. Don’t insult other peoples questions and then bring up something as personal as that!
I would like to ask, ‘which two skaters (male & female) does he see as up-and-coming stars on the international skating scene?’
I was wondering if Brian had any comments about how the Olympics are televised nowadays. It just seems that they are much less enjoyable to watch than they were during Brian’s heyday. It seems like they don’t give you time to really get into watching one sport. Just clips from a bunch of sports that Americans are doing best at and then it’s back to commercials. Does he see this change and how does it affect the popularity of sports like figure skating? It seems as though fewer people are watching the Olympics because of these changes and are less familiar with the athletes. In turn, this probably affects whether people will follow athletes’ careers pre- and post-Olympics.
I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to accept the fact the Michelle Kwan won’t have an Olympic gold medal. Does he have any advice?
Mr. Boitano, what was your reaction to the South Park song that mentioned your name? Did you see the movie or did fans point it out to you? Have you ever thought about guesting on an episode of South Park? Because we do want to know just what Brian Boitano would do…
I would like to tell Brian how much I have enjoyed his skating. He has brought me to tears a few times (I know, corny). I would like to voice my displeasure and ask if he agrees, that all the “skating” has gone out of figure skating. It is rarely beautiful and is more like “how many jumps can I fit in”. Women’s skating seems especially to have suffered. Too frantic!
Does he have any comments on Brian Orser’s retirement? Was the Battlke of the Brian’s as big a deal in the US as it was in Canada?(Orser skated his “farewell” performance during a Star on Ice show televised last night in Canada.)
I’d love to see a “So you think you can skate” reality show. Would he be able to produce one? Be a judge?
For Brian:
Now that Brian Orser has coached Kim Yu-Na to the World Championships and possibly another GPF title, are you going to throw your hat into the rivalry rink and start coaching full-time? Alissa Czisny could use a jump coach.
No I just can’t go there. I respect Brians talent too much.
Isn’t he the foreign dude from perfect strangers?
What has been your favorite figure skating moment in the last ten years?
Two questions:
1) What do you think of Johnny Weir’s insistence that he doesn’t need to go for the quad to be competitive? Is he living too much in the past or can he consistently make up that much points on the rest, even though he can only do two triple-triple combinations due to the Zayak rule?
2) You skated with Champions on Ice for many years. What do you think about the cancellation of the show?
And one more (sorry!). Compulsory figures have been gone from international competitions for 17 years. Do you think it’s time to get rid of the compulsory dance?
Is there any chance Carmen on Ice is coming to DVD soon? I think I watched it nearly every day when I was 12 but I’m afraid if I try to watch it now the tape will break!
I love to watch skating, but the last few make me mad. I don’t want to see the Judd’s or Seal’s tonsils or backside! They are showing them more than the skaters. Just saw Seal, and you couldn’t even see who half of the skaters were! The singers are getting more time on camera than the skaters. Is it a skating show or a singing show? Lets see the SKATERS!!!!!
i love your back flip and its so cool also because im related to you.because my great uncle gilbert your uncle died in world war 2
