This nifty little clip is a big sloppy kiss to videogaming made (several months ago) by a talented young fella named Thuyen Nguyen. I’m not sure where I stand regarding Roger Ebert’s assertion that videogames are not an art form (he does make some good points) but I do know that the best games can offer a kind of experience unlike anything you might find in a book or movie or TV show. Perhaps that’s a discussion for another day. In the meantime, peep this footage. And when you’re done, we invite you to share your favorite send-a-shiver-up-your-spine gaming moments. I’ll start: Who remembers that moment in the PSone version of Tomb Raider, when the T-Rex comes charging out of the dark?

PSone, Metal Gear Solid. The battle with Psycho Mantis when he moved your controller, read your memory card, and the only way to beat him was to actually use the OTHER controller!
The first time you step out onto Hyrule field in The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time as the music swells, and you know you’re in for a huge adventure.
Also I still have a little bit of a heart murmur, every time I hear that music when you’re underwater and running out of air from Sonic the Hedgehog.
Astro Boy, that battle with Psycho Mantis was SO frustrating to me (“I can read your mind”) that I actually ended up breaking my Playstation controller when I slammed it to the ground after I died. How was I (or anyone) supposed to know that the way to beat him was to plug into the Player 2 slot?!
I played Halo late but unspoiled, and so when the Flood first appeared and those little crab things started jumping all over me…it scared the crap out of me. Also, the beginning of Bioshock freaked me out a bit too.
In the American numbered FFIII, when the long, dark haired sword carrying character (sorry, dont know his game name cause he looked like Ioz from “Pirates of Dark Water”, so that’s what we called him) found the souls of his dead wife and child on the train, and after the battle was over, he lost them all over again as they rode off to (I only assume) heaven…forever I will be tied to RPG’s because of that heart breaking moment.
Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid will always stand out for me, too. And I will never forget Final Fantasy X because my wife got more wrapped up in the story than I did and FORCED me to stay up until 3-4am every night (before getting up against at 6) after work until I finished it.
Game Boy, Metroid. During the final battle with the big alligator metroid monster, if you didn’t have enough missiles to finish the job, you had to roll into a ball and go INTO her mouth, down to the stomach and drop your bombs in her belly!
The ending of Star Craft:Brood War, which left me so hyped for a sequel, which we’re just now getting a decade later.
The final battle in Shadow of the Colossus. Just the shear enormity of the Colossus coupled with the frustrating attack process: run through underground tunnel, dodge lighting bolts, climb his gears, jump from hand to hand to head all while dealing with the lose of my horse Argo.
My first drive down Ocean Blvd in Vice City. I was in the Infurnus, driving within the law, at night while listening to Blondie’s “Atomic.”
no video game moment will ever be more defining for me than when i finally bred the gold chocobo in FFVII and summoned the knights of the round for the very first time…..i was so excited to use it that i actually cast in on a goblin with like 50 HP or something lame like that….103hrs47min was my time to get to that point…..and it was totally worth every second
I get giddy every time I watch the opening movie to FF XII. Its so beautiful and well done, plus the music is great. Honestly, part of me wanted to sit there and watch more of that instead of playing the actual game (great game though). I’ve had shivers during parts of the Kingdom Hearts series too. Lets see…the opera scene and when Kefka destroys the world from FF VI, the plot twists in FF Tactics, when Selene leaps on top of the swords in Grandia II and the first time I ever played Link to the Past. I won’t even go into the number of times games have made me tear up.
Ocarina of Time was the first time I really felt while playing a video game. First when the Great Deku Tree dies and withers away in front of you, but then even more so when Saria gives Link the ocarina on the bridge separating the forest from the outside world, and Link backs away slowly and runs away from her. Oh man, I’m getting tingles just thinking about it.
