According to the Chinese calendar, 2007 was the Year of the Pig. But talk to a devoted group of consumers — ranging from obsessive gearheads to gotta-have-it-now early adopters to usually techno-phobic housewives — and they’ll tell you it was the Year of the iPhone. They may have a point. Brisk sales of Apple’s all-in-one device have added to the company’s already healthy bottom line — and Time magazine recently dubbed the $499 $399 device "Invention of the Year." (In fact, the iPhone was a sensation before it even showed up in stores: literally minutes after after Steve Jobs announced the gadget back in January, tech-bloggers went into overdrive — speculating on performance specs and offering their own visions of a glorious post-iPhone world). Let’s face it, we’d be hard-pressed to name another gadget or piece of electronics that made such a splash this year.
Hmmm…except for the Nintendo Wii (still in ridiculously short supply — some fourteen months after it debuted)… Or the latest e-books from Sony and Amazon… Or increasingly affordable high-definition TV sets (hey, my parents want one — I think the last piece of electronics they purchased was an AM/FM clock radio back in 1978)…And, well, there’s probably a couple dozen other nifty electronic devices I’m forgetting.
Okay, all you tech-savvy PopWatchers: What gadgets did you absolutely have to go out and buy this year? And which ones are still on your holiday wish list?

My mom came home the other night and surprised us with a 37″ flatscreen HDTV – and there’s a rumor going round the house that by the 8th night of Hanukkah, we’ll have a Wii as well…
As for the iPhone, no thanks. My video iPod will suffice.
We have a Wii and we love it. I’m just hoping for some new games to play. And maybe that thing that will let me play my iPod in my truck.
I Got a WII from the interwebs, and I Lurve it. I also just bought a new phone – the “Gleam” from Samsung. It is delish!
IPOD TOUCH,
IPOD TOUCH,
IPOD TOUCH.
i would slit my wrists for an ipod touch.
I got a MacBook Pro last Christmas and I’m ridiculously obsessed with it. I will never ever ever buy a PC again. Ever.
The Big Deal in our house, though, has been HD television. When Dad has a football game I’m almost tempted to watch because everything’s so damn sharp and pretty.
The new iPod Nano is on my wishlist. That thing is so slim. I’m kinda afaird it’ll snap right in half. But that won’t stop me from wishing for one.
I want a new kitchen radio. My old kitchen radio is fried.
My dad promised me his old record player, but he can’t get it to work. So I have asked Santa and Mrs. Claus for a new record player with a USB port.
like loads of other people, all i want for christmas is an iPod touch!
I’ve been a happy camper with my iPhone since June 30th after waiting all of 20 minutes at an AT&T store. My two word review: Nifty Gadget!
1. Magellan GPS
2. New Verizon compatible cell(since they don’t have an iPhone)
and 3. I know it’s not a WII, but I want one of those Nintend DS handhelds. Those have to be in stock.
I’m all about the Drobo.
Nothing electronic, I’m hoping for a Pelikan M800 fountain pen.
I actually got myself an awesome Sony 32 inch HD TV a few months ago (LOVE IT! I’m a total HD snob now). My boyfriend bought a Wii, which he adores…and I’m so not interested in an iPhone.
I think the only thing I’d like to get for Christmas is an HD DVD player but I find them really expensive…never mind the fact that HD DVD’s are like twice the price of regular DVD’s. Yeesh. Maybe I’ll wait a few years…
iPhone! iPhone! iPhone! Shame they aren’t coming out here in Europe until next year. But I can stil lust after it. In the meantime, my husband and I are treating ourselves to an XBox 360 and Rock Band. We already have a Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP, etc.
