I bought it so you don't have to: Project Runway's BITTEN dress

Sjp_lThat’s right, folks, the first shopping day after last Wednesday’s Project Runway, I headed to a Steve & Barry’s store—in Orlando, FL, where I was spending Thanksgiving—to check out contestant Victorya Hong‘s winning "neck-tie trapeze" frock (pictured here, on a model) when it debuted in Sarah Jessica Parker’s BITTEN collection.

Much to my dismay, the dress was not available in the charcoal color fabric that I thought I saw during the episode (my editor argues otherwise, but I saw dark gray on my sad, non-HDTV screen), but instead in black and burgundy. Other than that, no other design details were changed, though on the rack, the stretch-cotton dress could easily have been mistaken for an artist’s smock.

After trying on the dress and futzing with the attached scarf/bow/necklace thingie, I decided that for $19.98 it was worth taking home. Let’s be honest, the Project Runway and SJP stamps of approval probably swayed me a little (okay, a lot), but I really did like the fact that the garment was both forgiving and simple. Plus, it has pockets. Yay!

Also available for $14.98 was a grey and black version of the shrunken vest Victorya put over her design, but I passed on that, because really, for most of us, "shrunken" is just a code word for "impractical."

Though a Steve & Barry’s spokesperson says the dress has been "flying off the racks," there were plenty left in all sizes in the Orlando store when I went, so I’m betting there’s still time to grab one. (Sorry online shoppers, you can only get it in stores.)

So, Pop Watchers, tell me: Have any of you bought the dress, or at least gone to look at it? And what did you think of SJP as a guest judge? Did she pick the right challenge winner, or is there another design you’d rather have ended up at Steve & Barry’s?

I think it’s smart you passed on the vest. It never worked for me.
My question is…is the dress really as short as it appears on that model? Looks like she could have an unfortunate Britney Spears moment if she’s not careful…

I like SJP but I couldn’t understand all the hype about her visit. She dressed cute on her Sex and the City show – but they had people to dress her. How that relates to her being qualified to judge fashion, I don’t know. Because we all know that none of these celebrities actually do their own designs on their labels!! But then, I wonder how Heidi can be a judge too – and I really like her on the show. But I just wonder. Nina, Tim, and Michael, I get..but Heidi I don’t.

It was really cool to see SJP on Project Runway. I actually preferred Elisa’s dress. I thought that it was prettier 9minus the spit stain, of course). I may have to make a trip to Steve and Barry’s this weekend though…. Victoria’s dress is cute…. and it has pockets! Awesome.

I liked Kit (Pistol)’s dress/sweater with the pockets. I wouldn’t wear the Beret, but I think I could wear that with jeans instead of the leggings and get away with it. The winning dress looked like it would just be cold this time of year.

I really didn’t like Victorya’s dress at all – it looks like the kind of shapeless tent shirts I tend to wear (not by choice, but because I’m fat and that’s about all they make for women my size.) As short as it is, most women – and particularly most larger women (who are supposed to be a consideration in the BITTEN line – the sizes go up to a 22) – would need to wear some kind of pants with it, so it ends up just *being* a big tent top, with pockets.
I really like Elise’s dress. Again, many women – and most larger women – would want to pair it with some kind of leggings or pants, but the princess seaming on it, the little flair it has at the bottom and those sleeves would make it more flattering and a real change of pace.

the dress it on my x-mas list…and SJP was just so sweet and looked amazing…

It’s nice, but a bit too much with the tie though. Also I’d like to see a dress that will flatter both a tall and a petite woman.

I bought the dress this past weekend for a friend for Christmas. I also thought the dress would be charcoal gray not black and burgundy. While I thought it was really cute on PR, it definitely lost its appeal in person. But the friend I bought it for is a huge PR fan, so I bought it anyway. As for the length, yes it’s very short so I bought a pair of leggings to go along with it.

I loved that SJP was on Project Runway… my favorite show and one of my favorite stars. I have to admit I wanted to go see the dress the minute I saw the episode but the closest steve and barry’s is an hour away. Hopefully I will get out there this weekend and there will be some dresses left. I wish that the cape thing the crazy girl made would have been chosen to go to stores instead of that vest but oh well. I love the bitten line I own many items from it and I especialy love that it fits a varity of sizes b/c like most people i’m no size 2. oh and Maxie SJP is very involved in the designs in her line and does have a good fasion sense she is as qualified to judge as Heidi Klum is b/c isn’t a modle just like an actress… some one else chooses their clothing.

Wasn’t crazy about the dress… or any of the others for that matter. But I loved SJP as a guest, and I’m still excited about this season’s contestants. (Well… except for that whiny baby Christian!)

I don’t have cable so I don’t get to see the show, but I’m about to google it because now I’m really interested. I think that dress is super cute, and I’m madly in love with the Bitten line.

I had never heard of Steve and Barry’s when I saw that episode. Neither had any of my friends. The very next day, I went to the nasty mall by our house and noticed one of those stores for the first time. I can’t imagine buying clothes that are made even more cheaply than the stuff at Old Navy or Target. Seriously, I would be scared of wearing that stuff more than once or even throwing it in the wash. Anyway, I was looking for the dress, but didn’t see it. Then again, all the Bitten clothes were such a snooze, I probably wouldn’t have noticed it. And SJP is not worth crying over.
