A tale of three 'Sorry' videos

Wednesday night’s episode of America’s Next Top Model tested the eight remaining finalists on their ability to convincingly seduce/be surly toward Enrique Iglesias in his new video. (Important work!) On first listen, I thought Iglesias said the track was called "Tired of Being a Star" — which I found oddly contradictory, since he was promoting it with a reality TV appearance — but then I realized the actual title was "Tired of Being Sorry." And then I was like, "’Tired of Being Sorry,’ as in the super-awesome 2005 single by Ringside?"

Indeed, that’s exactly the song Iglesias covered, although, for my money, I’d choose the gravelly good original every time — and not just because Balthazar Getty (of ABC’s Brothers & Sisters) makes up half of Ringside (along with singer Scott Thomas). Or that the video has a cameo from Dermot Mulroney. As for my preferring the Top Model-ized version of Iglesias’ clip to the official release, you can probably chalk that up to my love of Lisa, Heather, and Saleisha, not to mention the awfulness of Chantal.Check the Ringside version below, and after the jump,  a side-by-side comparison of Iglesias’ "Sorry" videos. Which one is your fave? All must be revealed!

I can see why Enrique thought he could add more synthesizers and the pop-loving masses would eat it up, but his version doesn’t begin to compare to the super awesome Ringside original.
I like the quick glimpse of Christian Slater in the Ringside video, but you forgot to mention the famous, multi-talented director — Joaquin Phoenix.
At first it irritated me that Enrique was covering a song so recently released as a single for someone else, but if it brings more attention to Ringside, I’m down with it.

I like the original better. It has more of a punch (pun intended) than the remake. The remake is far too slick, and even though it’s a good song nonetheless, I think Ringside nailed it the first time around.

Mmmmmmm! Did someone say Balthazar Getty??

  • Phil

Ok Slezak, you trumped me on thsi one, I totally had no idea who Ringside were, or that “Tired Of Being Sorry” was even a remake, AND A RECENT ONE AT THAT! But after doing some more digging, Ringside is signed to Flawless/Geffen Records, but even MORE interesting is that Scott Thomas moonlights as designing clothes for Inrerscope act No Doubt, too which, Enrique Iglesias is signed! And is it just me or does the chorus of both versions sound similiar? Enrique sounds pretty close to Ringside’s version during the hook, AND I’d even go one step further to think Balthazar Getty is singing backing vocals on the Ringside version’s chorus! Have they ever used Ringside tunes on Balthazar’s hit dramadey, BROTHERS & SISTERS? Anyways, I hope Enrique can turn this tune I’d never heard of into some kind of hit, since his last single, “SOMEBODY’S ME” didn’t even chart on Billboard’s Hot 100!

C’mon, the Top Model one is TOTALLY the best! The Ringside version sounds a bit “Idol Auditiony”

  • Chardylove

Ringside! That is such a good, underrated album and every song on it is darkly unique and catchy at the same time…
But Enrique’s vampire theme does fit the song quite nicely…

Was that Casey Affleck I saw sitting in the audience in the Ringside video?

I’ll go with ringside. Enrique Iglesias is a jerk for making the name “Enrique” famous before I could get a shake at it. Now when I tell people my name, those who can pronounce it always say “like Enrique Iglesias”. That no talent with the mole on his face just needs to disappear into thin air already.

  • Lance

Ringside’s version is more indie-pop-alternative. And the Mole’s version is more dance-pop goodness. I appreciate them both, but I loved the original first. And Balthazar’s in a band? Who knew? I guess I can hate him on Brother’s and Sister’s a little less now.

  • Margaret

I saw the Enrique video yesterday, thought the song was catchy, but had no feeling from it (the usual simpering Enrique sound).
But when I was watching the Ringside video I nearly wept. I had no idea the song could be so beautiful. Enrique managed to drain it of any meaning.

Am a longtime fan of the original Ringside version. Enrique hasn’t an original bone in his hot hot body.

  • Beth

I like the ringside version better. It’s also a better video storywise. As far as Enrigue…Why would they make two versions? That’s kind of dumb. I also noticed the bite marks were on the right side of enrique’s neck and they show the woman biting him on the left side of the neck. I never would have caught this if i hadn’t been talked into watching it twice.

  • Tommy Marx

He’s looking in the mirror, which is why at first glance the bites appear to be on the wrong side of his neck. But even though he is SOOOO pretty to look at, I’d choose Ringside’s version over Enrique’s anytime.

  • Yasmin

I like the Enrique version better.

  • I knew it!

I knew something good would eventually come from my love of ANTM….finding out about an awesome band! Thanks for the popwatch slezak, I had never heard of Ringside and have since checked them out and I’m lovin’ it!
