I love Halloween episodes, if only for the opportunity to see my favorite characters dressed up in wacky costumes. And last night’s episode of Bones did not disappoint. Not only were we treated to a nerdy version of Booth doing his best squint impersonation and Brennan looking pretty damn hot in her Wonder Woman outfit, but also the plot was a logical holiday tie-in. The spooky maze where the first mummified body was found, as well as the haunted house where the second one was discovered, didn’t feel like forced contrivances (unlike the unseen patron party which was the excuse for the Jeffersonian staff to put on costumes. More on that later.). Sure, we never really got to understand the particular pathology of the snarky EMT-serial killer but, hey, he was dressed as a clown when Booth killed him. What more can you ask for?
Speaking of clowns, Booth showed his truly manly side when he copped to having coulrophobia, an abnormal fear of clowns. His little shriek and jump in front of the scary clown in the haunted house was priceless and in no way emasculating (ahem). I loved that Brennan referenced his shooting-the-clown-on-the-ice-cream-truck incident from last season but wouldn’t this fear have been a pertinent disclosure during that whole arc?
Booth and Brennan exhibited little shifts in their personalities this week. Was anyone else surprised by Brennan’s acceptance of that minister’s argument against abortion? I know she wasn’t swayed by it, but for someone who is normally so intolerant of fundamentalists and religious zeal in general (usually when talking to Booth) she sure did seem pretty zen about the whole thing. And devout Christian Booth was the one to take issue with the minister’s "kind of horrific" Hell House pitch, feeling like they’re on the wrong side of the issue.
Brennan continued her leap-of-faith kick when she got Hodgins andZach to essentially guess as they were narrowing down the places tolook for the latest missing girl, Megan Shaw. That was after the greatSquints versus Norms Jeffersonian War of 2007, when Booth, Angela, andCamille were banished because the squints couldn’t work at fullcapacity with people like Booth and company "constantly interruptingthem with irrelevancies."
Of course, it was hard to take any of them seriously in theircostumes: Camile trying to look authoritative in her sexy Catwomangetup; Angela as Las-Vegas-showgirl Cher; Hodgins in a ridiculouslyoversized naval officer’s uniform (??) that made him look like a toycop; Zach as the bottom half of a cow; nerdy Booth, complete with tapedspectacles, highwaters, and pocket protector; and a leggy, boobaliciousWonder Woman Brennan with her bracelets and lasso. It was kind ofdelicious to see Booth’s slack-jawed initial reaction to Brennan’soutfit. Yowzer.
Thankfully we had some progress in the Angela/Hodgins story with theappearance the quirky new private investigator, Amber Kipler, who foundAngela’s husband on a remote island in the Florida Keys pining away forhis lost bride. (She first proved her worth by revealing that Angelachanged her name on her 18th birthday because it came to her in a dream— a fact she learned from a girl named Roxy whose heart Angela broke insecond year art school. Obviously, that just titillated Hodgins.) Nomatter how appealingly Kipler painted the mystery husband (smells likea summer breeze, the most beautiful man she’d ever seen, etc.), Angelaremained adamant that Hodgins is her man. That’s just a lovely setupfor true love triangle, isn’t it?
So, is there a well-known actor you’d like to see cast as Angela’shusband? What was up with that killer smack Brennan gave the kid ininterrogation? Are you ready for the return to the Illuminati storylinenext week? What kind of name is Goremagan? What does it mean, people??

Kipler, interestingly, was played by Azura Skye, who was the patient of the week on House the previous week (the one who saw ghosts.)
I can’t believe you left out the awesomely random guest appearances of Rider Strong aka Sean Hunter from Boy Meets World as the freaky grim reaper kid and Lily from Grounded for Life as the sister of one of the mummified girls.
I really loved this episode last night! Definitely one of the best Halloween-themed episodes I’ve ever seen (yes, better than some of the famous Simpsons Halloween shows).
Does anyone know the difference between the Mini-TV Watches and the real thing? They’re about as long, just as good, but they’re relegated to Popwatch blog status. What no room on the homepage?
This show is easily shaping up to be my favorite one of the season, every episode just gets better and better.
Oh and for the record I thought Bones slap to that kid was hilarious. She just looked so happy aferwards.
So did anyone else notice that Brennan’s Wonder Woman costume did not have the gold bracelets or golden lasso? They were silver. I’m assuming this has something to do with rights to the Wonder Woman character and also that theoretical movie that may happen someday and not a gross oversight on the part of the Bones producers.
booth and brennan seem to be warming up to each other in the last 5 minutes of each episode. if they hook up = shows over. they manage to ride that fine line each week. bravo. it did seem like they were cutting out some of the “why” this episode so they could fit in the halloween part.
i love that the guest stars weren’t the murderers. i half expected the grim reaper and sister to somehow be in on it since i recognized them both. glad they didn’t follow the pattern of “the famous person did it.”
Wow Bones looked hot in this episode!
Such a great show!! I hope Angela doesn’t want to get with the husband again they could cast that guy James from Survivor as him that guy is HUGE!
How about Djimon Hounsou as Angela’s husband? Yum!
I about fell off the couch when I saw Rider Strong as I was flipping through and I stopped right then – good episode and better costumes. As family friendly as “Boy Meets World” was, there were some funny people on that show.
Abby, I think it was explained somewhere that Hodgins’ outfit was the Captain Smith costume from Titanic (as in, the actual costume worn in the movie). Loved last night’s episode!
EAH: speaking as a comics geek, Wonder Woman’s bracelets are silver. However, you’re right that her lasso (and her tiara, chest piece and belt) are gold, not silver. I expect they were off-design intentionally to avoid any rights issues (same deal as with Camile’s Catwoman outfit, which was kind of a mix of the two different movie Catwoman — Catwomen? — outfits, but was off-model for each). Anyway, the important thing is that both actresses looked hot in their costumes.
For you Buffy geeks out there, the woman who played the P.I. in this episode was the girl (one of Dawn’s classmates, I think) who foresaw her own death in one of the Buffy episodes. She’s got a memorable quality about her.
Brennan as Wonder Woman = hott
Last night’s episode was the first episode of Bones I had ever seen. I kept seeing the previews during commercials and it looked funny. Im so glad i tuned in. I had nothing to watch on tuesdays but now i got Bones and House!
Freakin’ hilarious episode. The part where Booth went through the maze instead of – through – the maze was so funny. Shows like this totally explain the demise of the sitcom.
Kudos to MAC and Binky for noticing the two cameo’s:)
Thank you Jay! I recognise her as a Buffy character but could not remember the episod.
And Booth going “through” the maze was hilarious!
I’m with you MCM, Djimon Hounsou was my pick as well!
I’ve now seen the woman who played the PI as a guest star on three shows in a week: House, Bones, and Ghost Whisperer. Someone’s got a good agent!
Nobody’s mentioned it, but Wonder Woman, I mean Brennan, spinning at the end was pretty funny. But wasn’t spinning the signature move of Isis, not Wonder Woman? Or did they both do the spinning thing to turn into their superhero character? A little help please, this is gonna bug me for the rest of the day …
I want Mr. Eko as Angela’s husband. Not only was he great on LOST but didn’t anyone see him all muscled out in The Mummy Returns?!?!? Hubba, hubba!
Lynda carter’s Wonder Woman from the TV show did the spin thing. I don’t believe the spin is part of the comics.
I thought Mr. Eko as well, but an unknown hottie would probably work better.
Favorite parts of the episode: Booth knocking down the maze walls, and Hodgins and Zac telling Bones that Wonder woman was hotter than Catwoman.
Great episode last night. Just fantastic. Brennan was beyond hott in that costume! And the story line was fantastic. I didn’t think Rider Strong was going to be able to pull it off, but he played the role well enough to make me forget Sean Hunter. Favorite parts of the episode: (1) Hodgins as King of the Lab in the beginning of the ep. I’m waiting for some sort of confrontation btwn Hodgins and Zach. Zach really needs some more face time to delve into the war experience. (2) Bones punching the grim reaper. Season 1 Bones kicked so much tail – what happened to that??? (3) Killer in a clown mask – Booth facing his clown fear and Brennan protecting the girl facing her fear of snakes. (4) I’ve always loved the closing moments with Booth and Brennan, where their guards seem to come down. And my favorite part … (5) The spin and her throwing up her wrist guards at the end. Classic Brennan. Just perfect.
This was a fantastic episode! It would be great if EW did an article/review in its mag about BONES, because while it may not get all the press of CSI, it is definitely doing what it does well.
I don’t think I have ever laughed so hard during a shoot out. Yet, the writers brought it right back with Brennan telling Booth he doesn’t like to kill people. Sigh…
Bones the character and Emily Deschanel are so unique to television. Just fantastic!
i loved everything you guys mentioned, plus the part when she squealed, “My gun is to big for me!” lol it’s always too big for her. those double entendres get me every time.
The P.I. should become a recurring role, she was fantastic with her “professional” justification for every outrageous comment she made: “You’re RIGHT, thank you! Now you can sleep like a baby.” LOL
Booth’s shriek was the highlight of the night, plus Bones spinning at the end til she gets dizzy – you see the little girl behind the Dr. Nice.
For Angela’s husband in Fllrida how about a hot Cuban-American like Bobby Cannavale, or better the smoking Argentine-Mexican SEBASTIAN RULLI? Google him, a solid 10.
Awesome show, once again ! I was glad someone could place the PI as the POTW in House. I thought she looked familiar. It was great to see Bones spinning with her costume. Just a little insight into that great character.
MARIO LOPEZ.
Ripped arms and abs, check. A ‘10′? Check. Smells like a summer breeze? Check.
As usual great show! This underrated show has everything: humor, mystery and chemistry!
