Snap judgment: Spice Girls' new single

Spice_lThe Spice Girls’ new single, "Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)," hit British radio last week, but I needed a few days to process its stupendously awful title before blogging about it. Seriously, the whole thing sounds as if someone swallowed down Vitamin C’s "Graduation (Friends Forever)" with a gallon of Splenda and a bottle of NyQuil, then vomited it back up with the help of Auto-Tune. And while Sporty, Scary, Baby, Posh, and Ginger were never known for their world-class lyrics, "Headlines" is enough to make me long for the poetry of "2 Become 1"

To go beyond the surface, to reach into your soul
This love is not demanding, my heart has told me so
I’ll hold on to my hero, with faith enough to fly
The power to imagine will keep this love alive

Zig-a-zig-what?

Anyhow, take a listen for yourselves, and tell me what you think, what you really, really think. And if you need something to jolt you out of a "Headlines"-induced stupor, I’ve embedded the "Wannabe" video after the jump.

Yea, I heard it last week and I was not impressed. It sounded to so bland and boring. I felt as though they were trying too hard to come up with a heartfelt song, and they were also rushing and so didn’t really make this as good a song as it could have been. I’ll take “2 become 1″ over this any day.

No comment about the song (zzzz), but I love how Posh takes up all the space in that picture. Poor Sporty.

The Spice Girls emerged in the late 90′s during a time when bubble gum pop was practically illegal! Wannabe, if we all actually remember, was (I can’t believe I’m going to type this) actually refreshing in a world dominted by acoutstical “grunged-out” fair that left us all a little depressed and on the verge of slitting our wrists. Now that the boy bands and Hannah Montana’s of the world have assaulted our ear drums for the past few decades, The Spice Girls are absolutely NOTHING to offer us. Their time happened one depressing summer when I was in college, when we all needed a sweet dose of saccharin — but that time is long gone.

i wish it was more upbeat a la spice up your life!

My friends and I dressed up as the Spice Girls for Halloween this year. We randomly broke out into song at the party. Loved some of their old tunes (I was 13 when Wannabe came out), but this new song is just slow and boring. Why didn’t they release an upbeat song?

i was hoping for some beats, but oh well. i still love the spice girls and you may argue if you’d like, but “say you’ll be there” was one of the best videos of the ’90′s. can’t wait for the greatest hits CD

I was such a huge fan almost eight years ago! God, time flies. In my defense, I was their target demographic at the time. Ahhhh… memories of me and my best friend jumping on the bed and belting out all their singles at the top of our lungs, over and over and over again. We had a whole dance worked out.

Wow. Sounds like the backing track to some commercial–you know, like those “reach out and touch someone” commercials that always used to make people cry? Or maybe Kleenex?

I never noticed before, but Posh didn’t have a single solo in that song, even though everyone else did. Yet, now, as someone else pointed out, “she takes up the whole picture”! Can she actually sing?

It’s actually grown on me quite a bit. I don’t think it lives up at all to the previous material but it’s not completely bad.

Oh. My. God. This is terrible. But not the “haha I love it!” kind of terrible like Trapped in the Closet or whatever. It is truly terrible. First of all, don’t they remember that we love them for their fun, poppy nature? Second of all… where are the accents? I love the accents!!!!! It’s what made them “unique”. Now, they just sound like a less stripperlicious version of the Pussycat Dolls… but we all know Baby Spice, so not even.

  • GeeMoney

It’s no good. Next song, please!

    One word: lame.
