Growing up in the ’70s, I learned what I thought were two hard and fast laws of fashion: Don’t mix plaids with stripes. And never mix multiple plaids in one outfit. And while in recent years I’ve changed my tune and worn such verboten combinations myself, I’ve never seen these rules broken with as much panache as on last night’s episode of Ugly Betty, where Marc (the fantastic Michael Urie, left) rocked a plaid jacket, plaid shirt, and plaid tie — along with a striped pant! — in what’s undoubtedly the fall TV season’s greatest fashion triumph. The way his orange pocket hankie tied the whole look together was, as Marc might say himself, "a-mah-zing!"
Oh, and speaking of Ugly (not ugly) trends, I’m pretty sure the clingy purple dress (the one with the gathered front seam and plunging back) that Amanda (Becki Newton, right) had on was the same exact one that Natalie Kimpton (Tamara Feldman) wore to Patrick Darling’s Senate campaign launch on Wednesday’s Dirty Sexy Money. Fashionistas, discuss! And for those of you reading this and thinking, "Ugh, too gay," you might want to skip the items I’m writing about Madonna, Kylie, and Beyoncé later this morning. Oh, snap!

I learned a third ruel too, but Marc didn’t seem to have tried to break it yet : Don’t wear polka dots. Ever. Although, now that I think about it, maybe there was a shirt last season… no, I’m pretty sure it was Betty !
Slezak is complete love. Period.
The polka dots rule always made me sad because I’m strangely drawn to them. Sigh.
You’re the best Michael Slezak! You never fail to make me laugh, usually out loud.
Guess this doesn’t count as the same kind of t.v., but watch any show featuring NFL players that are now commentators. You will see every possible combination of patterns, colors, lengths… Sometimes I’m too distracted to listen to what they’re actually saying.
The women on my moms side are very busty. My mom pointed out that if you are busty, never wear horizontal stripes because it will make you look four times bigger than you appear to be. She’s right.
I love the pumpikn plaid color on marc. It brought out his skin tone, but I don’t know about the whole outfit. Michael, you don’t think it’s a little too Gene Rayburn/Match Game?
Slezak is a-mah-zing indeed! Love all of Marc and Amanda’s clothing. So over the top. Oh wait, just about everyone on that show dresses over the top. Telenovela = crazy clothes. The story wouldn’t be the same if everyone was wearing the Gap.
I am always so torn when Slezak makes a Beyonce entry because it opens the floodgates for bitching and I have to go in with guns blazing. I’m scurred.
Ok Slezak has lost it…
What’s wrong with polka dots? I get the horizontal stripes rule although I would extend that to include anyone who’s a little wide or large anywhere shouldn’t wear horizontal stripes over that part of the body.
Where were you a few weeks ago with the JT/Beyonce post? I was drowning!
OMG,
While I watched that last night I had to pause it and say to my Boyfriend, “That is so hard to do to match plaids, and that is perfect!” And then the Marc character for the next day does it again!
The clothing designer on that show should get the emmey just for that one outfit. FAB-U-LOUS!
I hope i’m not straying the subject too much.. but do you know who that purple dress is by?? It’s gorgeous!
Ugh. Beau Brumell Lives! Except not.
I heart Ugly Betty. And Slezak.
(But I think that Marc’s “amazing” would be spelled out “a-may-zing!” Just a thought…)
No Sara, no “may”, it’s “mah” as in ma and pa — the fictional catch-phrase in the universe of Ugly Betty is “A-mah-zing!” as promoted by the Fashion TV commentator Suzuki St. Pierre played awesomely by Alec Mapa. SLEZAK: When are you going to write on TV’s ultimate go-to sissy, ALEC MAPA?
Ah, I was without a power cord that week. I would have helped. It’s just a remix people!
I want that purple dress. Who is it by? WHO??
