Don’t know about you, PopWatchers, but today’s big news about Harold Perrineau’s return to Lost has me as befuddled as the show’s mesmerizing season finale. Seriously, I just can’t figure out whether I’m glad about this. On the one hand, Perrineau was always one of my favorite actors on Lost (specifically, I’d say he ranks behind only Terry O’Quinn and Josh Holloway), and his sudden departure two seasons ago left me feeling empty inside. On the other hand, the series has been so peaceful and quiet without Perrineau’s Michael screaming "Walt!" at every turn. I’m really torn.
Then again, either way, this bit of news raises an even more important conundrum: What’s going to happen on Lost now that Michael’s back? Will he and Walt return to the island? What will they be up to? How is the show’s brain trust going to handle the fact that Malcolm David Kelley will have aged even more noticeably since the last time he appeared as Walt? And what’s Michael gonna be shrieking about this time?

Maybe he’ll appear in the future flash forwards. In that case, it would be easy to handle Walt’s aging…
I’m all for his return. He should come back as his character in Romeo & Juliet. That would be a hotmess.
Yeah, I’m guessing he’ll be back in flash-forwards.
“I AM GOING TO FIND MY BOY…WALLTTT!!!!”
Anyway, I agree with the people saying that Michael and Walt will likely figure in the flash forwards (which actually turned out to be an ingenius way to reincorporate the rapidly growing Malcolm David Kelley).
Though I’d grown tired of Michael (honestly, all he did in season 2 was run around like a maniac screaming for Walt…it’s ALL he did), I think Harold is a great actor and I’ll be really glad to see him on the show. The news was a pleasant surprise for me because I’d kind of moved on from Michael and Walt as season 3 progressed (and became excellent toward the end). Now I’m thinking it’s another exciting twist in a show I just cannot wait to return.
I think this is great news! Not so much because I loved Michael all that much, but more so because I have really been wanting to know what actually happened to him when he was allowed to “leave” the island. I also like Walt, so it will be fun if he comes back too. I enjoyed seeing him in the season finale, and I am interested in knowing what the Others did with him after they kidnapped him.
It would be really great if you wouldn’t put spoilers in your titles. Thanks muchly!
and what should the headline read, heather?
It was a given that he’d be returning because Walt reappeared in the last episode.
I think its sweet! He was always one of my favorite characters…maybe he’ll return on that boat thats looking for the island that Jack contacted…who knows? As for Walt, idk how they will bring him back and make it seem logical with the way he will have grown up.
Cara…it can read pretty much anything as long as it doesn’t name specific characters. There are other columnists who’ve written about this and used vague headlines. “Lost character returns” or “Character reappears on Lost”. Whatever gives the reader the idea that a character is returning without saying which one.
What the first poster said. Michal won’t be coming back to the island…
the spoiler police are back!!!!
Is this really spoiler? All it really says to me is that at some point during the course of the last 48 episodes we’ll find out what happened to Michael when he “left” the island. I would say that’s a pretty big loose end to leave hanging.
At least I won’t be able to torment my fellow ‘Lost’ fans by always asking ‘where’s Michael?’ They had to bring him back. Remember, he betrayed Jack, Kate, and Sawyer at the end of season 2, so how will they react to his character? Good news….
What about the idea that Michael and Walt appear in a flashforward, thus explaining Walt’s age and growth?
Oops. Should’ve read all the comments… that seems to be the consensus… (flashfowards).
And NOW Jin can continue saying, “Michael is my friend.” which he said almost as much as Michael screamed WALT in season 2.
You really think that headline was a “spoiler”? Do you not watch commercials which preview upcoming shows? What about the scenes for the next week’s episodes at the end of every episode?
I agree with other posters that Michael will figure into the flash forwards.
What concerns me is that this last minute annoucement was not intentionally planned for this season (the actor had signed on to another pilot that did not get picked up). I’m sure the writers figured Michael would be back before the series close, it just makes me wonder about how much of the details they have already crafted around the remaining 48 episodes. (Rather than making it up as they are going along).
Having read the last Harry Potter book, it made me aware how important it is that an author who has crafted a series know how the puzzle pieces fit into the larger scheme. I hope that when the Lost writers went off to their “writers camp” this summer they thought the series through to the end and how many of these pieces fit.
e! online is reporting that MDK may not be returning as a recurring character. they are also saying he won’t be part of the flash forwards. my thought is that maybe michael will be on that ship that is coming to pick up the lostaways…as in the ship happened upon michael and walt floating around the island trying to find the coordinates.
and kudos to joshua for recognizing the awesomeness that is josh holloway. far too many people only recognize terry o’quinn or matthew fox, but josh is more than a pretty face (and body…ha). his acting has been superb. he’s always been one of my favorite losties (along with terry, of course).
I thought it was common knowledge that Michael would be back this season?
Thanks for the tip, Rachel. So THAT’S why Michael wasn’t on the show this year; Harrold Perrineau was supposed to do another show. Reality intrudes on fantasy; I thought the writers were just teasing us.
If this article were announcing that Dominic Monaghan were coming back to LOST, I would care. But, Michael? Not so much.
WOOHOO!
I don’t know if it is the Lost drought we are in, or what, but this email spiked some adrenaline rush in me! One huge laugh I got a couple years back was when I saw the slogan, “Guns don’t kill people. Michael kills people.” I’m glad he’s coming back and I don’t care how really..in fact I’m having a future Jack moment right now…I need to get back to the island!!!!
Never missed him. Liked the show just fine (better, actually) without him. Might’ve been the constant “WAAAALT”ing, but he irritated the snot out of me.
What about Charlie? Definite flashbacks with Charlie?
Among all my Lost-watching friends, I am the only one who ever enjoyed Michael’s storyline and missed him when he was gone. Guess is my lucky day. Sorry, suckahz!
vh: There had BETTER be more flashbacks with Charlie! He SO got shafted by the writers.
I never liked Michael and was glad he was gone. BUT, I would like an explanation. I thought he might be on the ship that Jack contacted. He could be coming back for everyone, but he killed 2 people in cold blood. How will that play in his “return?”
I can’t imagine the Losties would welcome him back. At least, I hope he has Walt with him – I won’t be able to stand hearing him yell “WAAAALT” again!
