Did CBS make the 'Right' decision?

Categories: Television

Carey_lErstwhile comedian Drew Carey — who’s set to bow Aug. 7 as the host of CBS’ new game show The Power of 10 — made a shocking announcement last night on The Late Show With David Letterman by revealing that he was chosen to replace Bob Barker on The Price is Right this fall. My first reaction was one of…extreme disappointment. Carey’s not a bad guy; the big lug who once starred on his own ABC comedy was a fairly decent host of the improv-comedy series Whose Line Is It Anyway? But when the blogosphere teases you with inspired — and unorthodox — replacement possibilities like Rosie O’Donnell, the decision to recruit Carey seems terribly anti-climactic. Carey’s got some ginormous shoes to fill — which is probably why a certain CBS insider told me "You don’t want to be the guy who replaces Barker. You want to be the guy who replaces the guy who replaces Barker." I wholeheartedly agree — but then again maybe I’m underestimating the popularity of Carey. What do you think? Do you think his hire was far better than going with George Hamilton, Mario Lopez or The Early Show’s Dave Price?

Like I said when rumors of him being in contention started, he’s the best choice. He has the warmth and the humor (duh) that made Mr. Barker so enjoyable to watch.

    i disagree with the choice

I thought it was weird at first, but the more I think about it, the more I like the choice. He’s likable, has an easy going charm (unlike other candidates whose names rhyme with Posie Bodonnell) and will have an easy rapport with contestants.
Look people, there’s never gonna be another Bob Barker so the idea of him actually REPLACING Barker is insane. Drew’s gonna have an opportunity to carve out his own little niche.
That being said, you REALLY don’t want to be the guy following somebody like Barker. I’ll nauseate you guys for a second by using my football team as an example: you didn’t want to be Ron Zook (the guy who immediately followed Steve Spurrier), you wanted to be Urban Meyer (the dude who smelled like roses after Zook tanked and won the title.)

Why hate on Drew Carey? It was said that no one could replace Letterman’s old slot, but Conan did and succeeded. There was hating when Jon Stewart took over he struggling Daily show, and now it’s one of Comedy Central’s flagship shows.
IMHO, new hosts tend to get, as Bush would say “misunderestimated” (Drew’s a big GOP guy so it seemed appropriate to put in a Bush reference). New hosts do well when they breathe fresh air into an established show.
Now, it’ll be a tough role to fill. The other hosts mentioned above replaced guys with less experience and love than Barker. I mean, the man’s universal name recognition goes accross racial, economic and regional lines.
Carey’s going to have to demonstrate a real flair for all sorts of people to prove he can do it. But I have faith in this man and feel he deserves at least an iota of credit.
But Rosie O’Donnell? Kids would probably opt to go to school instead of stay in on sick days if she hosted.

I simply like him because of what he said last night on Letterman … Soccer is a GREAT sport! But anyway, I don’t watch the show because I am at hhmmmm WORK!

Who even *watches* THE PRICE IS RIGHT besides retirees and hungover college students?

I am just not fond of Drew Carey as a host. I found it hard watching him on the new “Whose Line..” because he is just not a great spur of the moment person. He’s better when he surrounds himself with those types of comedians, so seeing him hosting solo without funny friends..hmm. Guess I’ll have to tape it and see for myself.

Drew Carey is a smart, funny, and well-read guy. I think he’ll do a great job as host.

Potentially inspired choice of Rosie? Are you kidding? I’m not the biggest fan of Carey’s selection, but you at least know that the show will lack the drama and controversy that Rosie would have brought. She got a second chance with the View and she blew that. Good riddance to that mouth!!

First of all, NOBODY is a bigger fan of TPIR than me. When I was seven, I detroyed my mother’s coffee table when I tried to fashion my own Plinko board out of it using nails, glue, and some coasters. So my word might not be absolute, but it’s certainly genuine.
Anyway, I am pretty stoked about Drew Carey. Nobody will be able to take Bob’s place — the show will be different from now on, no matter who takes over. I never watched Drew’s sitcom, and rarely watched Whose Line — but whenever I do see him, one word always stands out — GENUINE. And actually I think that’s the most important requirement of the TPIR host — they need to be someone to relate to the bizarre contestant mix — little old-ladies, newlywed sailors, and the rollin’-on-X frat boys — with an air of charm and sincerity; and completely devoid of mockery. I think Drew will be able to do that. So good luck to him — no need for hatin’.
But I swear to God, if he f’s with Big Wheel – even a little bit — his ass is mine.

One question? What about his show the Power of 10? It hasn’t even started yet. Okay two questions…..is he planning on doing this til the age of 70 something? I don’t want them to have to replace another host in 10 years. It needs to be someone who wants to stay for the long haul. And if Drew is it, then yipee!!!!

Um, didn’t a post just like this just appear on popwatch??? Come on EW, I’m sick of reading the same comments. Why don’t yu just get a survey for “The View” replacement again.

  • t3hdow

Drew Carey? Well, it could’ve been a lot worse. I’m not terribly excited, but far from disappointed. I’ll just wait and see how this unfolds before giving final judgment.

I will not watch Price is Right with Drew Carey. BAD CHOICE CBS

  • lizzbert

Drew Carey seems like a smug a**hole to me. Not interested.

Rosie is too big for this, she’ll get a prime time gig on MSNBC. But CBS should have waited a while on this and really cast a wide net. This could kill the franchise. What will Middle America think when Carey’s frequency at the Playboy Mansion come out. Won’t that hurt him with the red-state viewership of this show?

  • mrclean

as long as he dosen’t involve Ryan Stiles this might be OK. that guy is hammier than easter dinner.

  • Matthew

At first I was little dissapointed, so to say, with the choice but after seeing the rest of his interview on Letterman I feel like he’s the perfect guy to take over. No one can do as good a job as Bob Barker or be the same kind of host as him. By picking someone like George Hamilton or Mario Lopez, it would’ve felt like they were trying to find someone just like Barker. I think Carey, with his improv background, will probably funny the show up a little and give it a new image maybe, so to speak. I know some will be dissapointed, but I think that it really is the same show and concept it was years ago. Just this time-a different host.

  • NineDaves

as long as it wasn’t ryan secrest, i’m okay.

  • Jer

Every single opening in TV doesn’t have to be Rosie’s for the taking. I think she would have been too much for the show. That’s why I think Drew might be the wrong choice too… The star of the show is the show. That’s why Bob was there, but never seemed to make the show about himself… I actually liked the idea of Dan Patrick, but he said no… Somebody smooth and not loud… Rosie and Drew don’t fit that… Haven’t seen Pet Star, but from interviews, Mario Lopez seemed to fit that bill too… We’ll see in the fall, I guess.

  • Anonymous

Tom B. (ex Hollywood squares host) would’ve been the smart choice. Drew isn’t especially witty, and he’s too bland

  • Poinky

Here we go with the people who are so self-important “I have a job, I don’t watch Price is Right.” OK, so you’ve never had a sick day in your life? Congrats!!!!

  • Thad

no one watched him before and no one will start now.

  • Heather

I much prefer Carey for Price over anyone else. The fact is, each gameshow has a certain flair. The host of any gameshow has to be able to not take attention from the contestants while providing a warm and inviting presence as continuity from week to week. They really can’t show too much of themselves personally, while having great personality. Rosie is too much personality for this game show. Price needs someone who’s either warm and debonair or everyman (Carey is everyman). Just like certain personalities host Family Feud (more excitable, a comedian). Hosting a game show isn’t hosting a talk show.

As an old Price is Right fan, I think this could work. I NEVER would have watched had Rosie been named the host, and I think CBS knew the majority of TPIR’s audience felt the same way. I have never really paid attention to Drew Carey, but I think he has the right demeanor to make it work.

  • NICOLE

I THINK THAT IT IS GREAT THAT DREW CAREY IS GOING TO BE THE NEXT HOST OF “THE PRICE IS RIGHT”. I FIND CAREY FUNNY AND THINK THAT HE WILL MAKE A GREAT HOST.

  • donner

I like Drew Carey…he’s thinks fast on his feet, he’s good with ‘real’ people, and he’s funny…I doubt he’ll stay for 35 years, maybe in a few we’ll get John O’Hurley (J.Peterman) and he’ll stay till he dies…

  • Court

c’mon, it could be so much worse…Rosie would have been terrible. John O’Hurley would have been an entertaining choice, but I don’t think Carey will do a bad job.

  • Lola

Oh for gawd’s sake. It’s the Price is Right. What it needs is a nice, amiable host like Carey. It does not need a pot stirrer like O’Donnell. She would have, in fact, ruined it with her incessant self focus.

  • GeeMoney

Who cares? It’s not like anyone is home at 11am EST to watch the show, anyway. I haven’t watched The Price Is Right since I was on summer break in like, the 4th grade!
Besides, there are too many people who comment on these blogs that get sooooo worked up over stupid crap like this. Find a hobby, people!
