A few weeks ago, I typed "100% Pure Love" into YouTube’s search field — because why wouldn’t I do that? Having just reenacted the break-it-down section of Crystal Waters’ ’90s classic ("back back to the middle and a back to the middle and AH!"), I was on a performance high. Slezak, Samantha Harmon, and most importantly I, had all awarded me a 100% retention rate of this special slice of history. Naturally I had to watch the video on YouTube.
But the first hit to pop up for "100% Pure Love" isn’t Crystal Waters. It’s one-time Olympic gold medalist and today’s extra-special PopWatch Birthday Princess Kristi Yamaguchi’s routine to "100% Pure Love." Logically. Kristi’s literal interpretation of the "back to the middle" breakdown was 100% pure better than mine, thanks to a dazzling scratch spin during which you think "She’s going to die!" but then she doesn’t. Kristi Yamaguchi’s centrifugal force nullifies my very existence.
So consider this a challenge. Anyone worth his/her weight in fringed spandex remembers "100% Pure Love." I’m looking for someone who remembers this particular ass-slappin’ 1994 figure skating performance. Why don’t you blow my mind? And happy birthday, KY! Ewwww, K-Y.
"Don’t you want a hit?" Yes.

this blog and the video are genius!
I not only remember that performance, I’m pretty sure I’ve got it on video tape somewhere in my archives from back when I was completely obsessed with figure skating.
I was 12 and saw this and loooooved it. The song, ice skating, I mean, what 12 year old girl wouldn’t want to be out there dancing and skating with Kirsti Yamaguchi?
Of course I remember this! I loved that song at the time and loved seeing Kristi have fun with a performance. I saw the link on the homepage (Kristi and Crystal Waters) and knew where you were going with this…guess I’ve got a good figure-skating memory! Thanks for posting!
I used to LOVE Kristi Yamaguchi when I was younger, basically because we have the same name (and the same spelling!) When I was in 3rd grade we were reading something about her and I got to read it out loud since we have the same name. I thought I was so cool.
I don’t remember the performance. Sorry. But, who could resist an excuse to say la-da-di la-da-da, la-da-di la-da-da? Certainly not I.
For some reason the song reminds me of Beverly Hills, 90210. Just me? Was it on an episode once?
I don’t particularly remember the routine, but I am POSITIVE that I remember the outfit!
Thanks for the reminder! Loved this song in the 90s – loved all that dance music! Those were the days….
I completely remember this! Who could forget that outfit!
Hearing Dick Button do the commentary for this is just the icing on the cake. He’s commenting on the “artistic merit” of 100% pure love!
I don’t remember this Kristi routine but I remember as a kid loving her routine to Bjork’s “Oh So Quiet.”
I love Dick Button, “This certainly is a more jazzy number”. Haha! He had no idea what was going on with that song.
yeah the commentators don’t even know how to handle this song. they’re like what? “she’s taken a liking to this type of routine.” everything about this post is hilarious. from the back to the middle and around again back back…
I remember this performance only because I remember how much I hated that song since it got played at least three times at a club where I hung out. great performance! – horrible song (though not so much now).
this is the funniest popwatch i have read in a long, long time.
I love 100% Pure Love. It took Crystal Waters from one-hit-wonder status to, you know, two hits!
I remember the song, the video, Kristi’s performance… I am officially a loser.
“She’s going to die!” = HILARIOUS
Professional figure skating = phoning it in.
I love the inane commentary. It reminds me of Best In Show. “She may dance with a partner in 1998. True. Or she may not…” Brazilliant!
I wrote Kristi Yamaguchi a letter in 5th grade. She sent me a letter and an autographed photo back. I still cherish that picture.
I remember this. When I was about 11 or 12 I was still in the girly-princess-ice skating phase, and watched all those awful professional skating shows/competitions. Granted, you could do far worse than Kristy Yamaguchi.
By the way, does anyone remember those old “USA vs. The World” professional skating competitions? Oy.
Wow! This brought back memories. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Crystal Waters sing another song that goes something like,” So she stands there singing for money….La da dee la dee da la da dee la dee da….She’s homeless” It was about a homeless girl who was never without her makeup. Am I crazy? Did she sing that?
I love that the commentators mention she reminds them of Scott Hamilton right after Kristi starts VOGUE-ING!
Gay, wet-dream.
