Only 10 days left till this year’s Emmy nominations are announced — which means two things: My left kidney will soon be deposited on a shrine dedicated to Vanessa L. Williams’ very necessary nod, and the good folks at Gold Derby are getting their leak on. Last week, while I was on vacation, the site reported the rumored list of 10 finalists still in the running in the Best Drama and Best Comedy Series categories, and on Friday, a pair of judges who’d attended screenings of various nominated episodes spilled the beans about which series are most likely to hear their names called when nominations are announced July 19. (Click here to read the full scoop.) According to that duo, Best Drama Series nominees are likely to include The Sopranos, House, Grey’s Anatomy (pictured), 24, and Heroes, while the Best Comedy Series race could come down to Two and a Half Men, Entourage, 30 Rock, Ugly Betty, and The Office. If Gold Derby’s sources predicted correctly, that would mean snubs for the remaining five drama (Boston Legal, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Lost, and Rome) and comedy finalists (Desperate Housewives, Extras, My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, and Weeds).
Considering how many Grey’s Anatomy and 24 fans feel those respective series are coming off weak seasons, their inclusion among TV’s five best drama series seems a little surprising. And if a sci-fi show is destined for Emmy recognition, shouldn’t Lost (or Battlestar Galactica, which apparently didn’t even crack the top 10) get Heroes‘ slot? On the flip side, if 30 Rock, The Office, and Ugly Betty score Best Comedy nominations (as predicted), I’ll be hard-pressed to feel my usual brand of post-nominations outrage. Unless, of course, L. Yeah doesn’t get her due. Then I’ll be hellaciously upset.
What do you think of Gold Derby’s list of predicted nominees? Should the Emmy judges have read the PopWatch Fantasy Emmy Nominees Gallery before going to work? Holla back!

If Heroes makes it to the final ballot, instead of LOST. I think it’s because people think LOST is a lost cause LOL. It seems like yesterday’s show, while Heroes is more fresh. And everyone will admit that LOST struggled at points last season. And fans were abandoning it. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t make it. Grey’s Anatomy is still fresh. It had a awkward year. But still had some refreshing stories and angst. So I can see while it could be there. Comedy I don’t care about. Ever since we lost FRIENDS, I haven’t been loving the comedy shows we’ve gotten. Maybe it will change eventually! In terms of drama, Heroes has a chance because it was the “buzzed about” show of last season. Whether it will win, I doubt it. But you never know.
Kind of a shame, since this season of Lost was by FAR the best. Ever since that first season, it’s not getting the recognition it deserves. But love seeing the love for Ugly Betty, and Vanessa Williams’ name had BEST be announced! Once as a nominee, and once as a winner.
If I have to live in a world where Grey’s Anatomy is considered a better show than Friday Night Lights? I might have to do something drastic. Because it’s not comprehensible. Grey’s is probably the worst show on television today, and it keeps getting showered with awards. FNL is the best show on television today, and it’s completely ignored. Life is just not fair.
I think Scrubs should get a nomination, but have no idea what it should be substituted for.
Another year with no nomination for The Wire??? Emmy voters, I don’t understand you one bit.
Slezak, thanks for the kidney visual aid. Welcome back!
Best Drama:The Wire!!!!
30 Rock doesn’t deserve to be nominated. Critics love this show but there’s a reason it has low ratings–it’s isn’t that funny. One of the most overrated shows on TV right now.
I think I just threw up
replace two and a half men with anything else on the list. seriously. why is charlie sheen still doing television?
I can’t understand why Heroes would be on that list. Yes, it’s a fresh new show (and yes, I am a fan) but I’ll be the first to admit that the writing was often weak and the acting left something to be desired. If the Emmy’s are supposed to be an indication of quality, Heroes is not the way to go. Lost on the other hand had its best season. The writing was crisp, the stories were deep and interesting, and the acting was phenomenal. Also, I hate that Battlestar Galactica is once again being ignored. I just don’t get why that is. And I agree with step…Grey’s Anatomy over Friday Night Lights? Hubba wha? Grey’s never recovered from that awful ferry boat three-parter making this its most annoying season. Sandra Oh and Ellen Pompeo deserve nods but that’s about it.
Oh yeah, and if Vanessa Williams’ name isn’t on the list, I’m not watching. Okay, I’ll probably watch but I’ll be really peeved about it.
For every single nomination the Emmy’s may get right, there will be at least 10 that are completely undeserved. I’ve grown used to seeing my favorite shows get ignored year after year (BUFFY, VERONICA MARS, GILMORE GIRLS, ANGEL, SCRUBS, BATTLESTAR–the list goes on and on). While I’m happy to hear that some of my new favorites may get some love (30 ROCK, UGLY BETTY), I’m not holding my breath. I would love for Lauren Graham to get some Emmy love at last to cap the brilliant work she performed for 7 years on GG. Ditto for Kristen Bell on VM. But I probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than those two ever getting Emmy nods.
Heroes over Lost? I think i just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Two and a half Men? Seriously?
24 , horrible season…
Grey, sorta week sencond half of the season. + they wrote out Kate Walsh.
But I do think LOST and UGLY BETTY were particularly strong this year. So I’m sure the Emmy people will find a way to SNUB THOSE TWO. Let’s just face it, they’re not really there to honor excellence. It seems that no matter how many tweaks they make to the Emmy’s, it’s still about honoring the completely mediocre.
Not to get off subject, but I think that photo of the cast of Grey’s Anatomy is bizarre. I don’t watch the show, but maybe having doctors and interns hanging out in a field makes complete sense to regular viewers.
If 2 and a half Men gets called out on nomination day, I will upchuck all over the TV.
24?? No way in hell. Put Friday Night Lights there instead.
2.5 Men also needs to go. Give it to My Name is Earl instead. Scrubs wasn’t that good this season.
As far as dramas go, The Sopranos is damned near a shoo-in to win since it was the last season and it has always been an Emmy darling.
sigh… how could i have let myself get excited (again) that this might finally be the year the wire gets recognized. i feel like charlie brown, and lucy just keeps pulling that football out from under me year after year!
Why is that Battlestar (and most sci-fi shows) get ignored? good work is good work people! Seriously, it might be hard to act a scene in which your lover leaves you (i.e. Grey’s Anatomy) but would nt that scene be harder if the Cylons were attacking at the same moment?
also, 30 Rock is Hilarious. so glad it got nominated…2 and half men is just another laugh track at stuff that is not funny show.
I actually watched the entire season of Grey’s Anatomy and even I have a hard time believing that it was one of the 5 best shows on TV last year. Do the emmy voters only have 3 channels? Count me in as someone who would like to see The Wire get some attention, I have only watched the seasons on DVD but even the worst episode of that show is far and above the best episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
I think Greys lost the Emmy nod with that 3 week arch during the sweeps when Merideth almost died. YAWN! That who story line with Alex and the mystery girl – went no where! Then, to top it off, they gave us that two hour preview of Private Practice – two yawns!
Ugly Betty + Vanessa Williams = Emmy
Thanks, Heath. I’ve also been perplexed by the “doctors in a wheatfield” concept.
Where is The Wire? They should at least get a “writing” nod.
Can’t we just not care about the Emmy’s? How about it if EW puts this much attention to the Peabody awards? Then we’ll actually see quality work being rewarded.
I agree with an earlier comment – while I love Heroes, it’s kinda a weak show in terms of writing and development. It’s good eye-candy and a good time, but let’s not confuse it with great television. I’m also a Lost devotee and while the audience has shrunk a bit, the show hasn’t suffered at all and is probably at its best this past season – just because people can’t be bothered to follow a complicated storyline does not mean the show has lost anything. Yeah, and Friday Night Lights has to be up there too – again, a smart, well-written show that may go over some people’s heads because it is a bit more complicated.
I agree, 24 was WRETCHED this year! Whatever happened to Martha and Charles anyway??? Did he die? Did she go to prison for a Paris-length stay? What was up with that stooopid plotline with Audrey & the Chinese? Ugh, it was horrible. And Lost I refuse to support since they killed off Charlie. Dominic Monaghan was the reason I started watching that show in the first place. Should’ve killed off Matthew Fox instead. He’s been annoying the hell out of me since Party of Five!
Heath & FLGrl- Maybe they just want it to be clear that these people are out standing in their field?
(I’m sorry. No really, I am. I just can’t help it.)
As long as “The Office” and any of it’s actors get nominated I’m satisfied. Easily the funniest show on regular TV with the funniest characters. I actually don’t mind 2 1/2 men but it is in no way the same league as The Office.
In my mind no show is more worthy than the Wire for drama, but it’s been said that it’s a show that doesn’t play well as one single episode. In other words, you need to see a whole season to appreaciate its brilliance. I understand that nominations are made based on just a single episode not an entire season.
OT: Why is the cast of Grey’s Anatomy stuck in a cornfield in this picture?
I really hope they can swing a best comedy actor nomination for Ricky Gervais. Besides the fact that he’s revolutionized comedy on TV more than anyone since Jerry Seinfeld (or at least Trey Parker and Matt Stone) his performance in Extras might have been more heartbreakingly brilliant than his work in the original Office.
