'Studio 60': Expecting a bumpy landing

Dl_lThis week’s Studio 60 status report: Tom’s brother? Still in AFGHANISTAN, still being held prisoner. Jordan? Still in the hospital (though we didn’t see her at all), still not out of the woods medically — but at least her daughter was delivered, premature but relatively healthy. Danny? Still engaged to Jordan, still pacing nervously about the hospital. Mary Tate? Still pitching that risky scheme of sending in a professional kidnap and ransom team to rescue Tom’s brother and his fellow airmen. Aaron Sorkin? Still hung up on flashbacks to October 2001, when the kind of censorship battles he relishes were raging, and when the stakes of the sketch show’s backstage drama were still high and compelling.

Now that Studio 60 is racing toward Sopranos-like oblivion, Thursday night’s episode, "K&R Part II," felt like it was in a holding pattern, circling the runway. There are still lots of loose plot strands and only a couple episodes left to tie them all up. But if this episode didn’t advance any of them much beyond last week’s "K&R Part I," it still kept viewers in a state of nail-biting suspense for an hour, something this show has seldom been able to do.

One new development: a PR disaster created by Simon (D,L. Hughley, pictured). Tom sent him to talk to one of the reporters camped outsidethe studio, to debunk the hurtful rumor that Tom and his brother hadbeen estranged. Bad idea — remember how Simon’s indiscreet talk causedtrouble for Tom during his arrest in Nevada, or for Matt and Harrietwhen he spoke to the Vanity Fair reporter? What was supposed to be aquiet leak to a single sympathetic reporter turned into an impromptupress conference, climaxing in a televised rant in which Simon blastedthe assembled journalists as vultures with short attention spans and anobsession with the trivial. As with the Wes Mendell rant that began theseries, one could hear Sorkin’s own voice. For Simon and the rest ofthe Studio 60 staffers, it was a moment that looked like careersuicide — but also a moment that made for great drama for those of usekeeping score at home.

Questions: Will Jordan live? If she doesn’t, will Danny lose thedaughter he’s started bonding with to her biological father? How willthe show staffers and the NBS network fix the mess Simon has createdfor them? What did Lucy read that made her smash the computer? WillMatt and Harriet ever — nah, I’ve truly stopped caring about that one.And how will the series draw to its close?

Why are these episodes called K&R?

  • Sara

K&R stands for Kidnapping and Rescue, I think. It’s what Mary Tate’s trying to coordinate to rescue Tom’s brother.
Didn’t they read out what Lucy read? Some blogger writing something stupid online about how the soldiers deserved it or something?

    what the hell’s studio 60?

Still enjoying this show very much. Can’t someone find the right vehicle for Matthew Perry – the guy is so charismatic on TV. I don’t mean ‘cute’ – I mean he’s compelling.

Why watch a show already sentenced to oblivion?

I think this is great Sorkin! Again, super topical. Anyone feel a bit of Isaiah Washington pouring out of Simon: an outburst that the media will surely snap up and exploit? I think Sorkin is finally writing the show and characters that he wanted, the show that shows the truth behind all the tabloids–these are just scared children given lots of money who also happen, because of a lazy media–the show’s, not the real one of course–to control the all important courts of America: the watercooler courts. And its ending in two weeks. Great! Can’t wait for Super Robot Vaccuum Cleaner Nannies dating Rich Bachelors on REALITY TV. Great! When does Heroes come back?

Lucy read that Tom’s bro’s capture was just a ratings ploy. One of the co-writers told Matt right after she stormed out of the room.

Did anyone else notice that most the time whenever there is a flashback scene with Matthew Perry, whether it be on this show or Friends – they seem to stick a baseball hat on him?? Well- with the exception of the “flock of seagulls” do. Just find in amusing:)

Sorry, but why has this show turned into the west wing? if Sorkin wanted to cover topics like a kidnapping in Afghanistan, he should have set this show in a CIA office. This show was a majorly blown opportunity. What a great premise, a gritty behind the scenes look at the the drama and ego battles backstage on a SNL like show. It could have been fantastic. Instead, we get a hostage crisis in Afghanistan?? John Goodman sermonizing about the true liberal spirit of Americas heartland? A Eulogy for comedy writer’s blacklisted during the McCarthy era? Where was the sex drugs and rock and roll? Instead we get the perils having a born again christian girlfriend, Matthew Perry nibbling on percocet and Sting playing a freakin LUTE!!! Please put this show out of its misery.

    Only two more weeks?
Sigh. Two more weeks of Studio 60 — my hands down favorite — and two weeks to go until NBC goes into oblivion for me. Bye-bye and good riddance, you putrid, pea-brained peacock.

Why didn’t Danny ask how to get a bracelet?

  • Disappointed

The doctor scenes at the hospital were horrible pieces of television. It may have been the actor, or it may have been the horrendous rom-com hospital drama writing, but come on Sorkin–you’ve done better with finding the light side of serious. No wonder the show was cancelled. The wonderful things no longer can make up for contrived and uneven storylines and characters.

I really used to like this show. It’s unfortunate that the series is ending in melodrama like this.

  • Jen

K&R stands for kidnap and ransom…not rescue

  • segsig

To jake, why would a crisis in Afghanistan require being set in a CIA office?? I think that is terribly insulting to the thousands of people the media ignores who are invested in these wars.
