Breaking the Rage Against the Machine code

Categories: Music, Web/Tech

Ratm_lRemember, back in the day, when you could go online, type in your age, Body Mass Index, and a few other vital statistics, and suddenly launch a ‘"Death Clock” that would count down the hours to your final breath? That was absolutely terrifying.

Thankfully, those kind of sites seem to have mostly disappeared … that is, until now. A mysterious countdown ticker has cropped up over at ratm82407.com, sending cyber-sleuths and Rage Against the Machine fanboys into a tizzy over what it all might mean. Some quick math tells us that the first clock will run out next Monday, on June 11; while the second will strike zero on…(let’s see, carry the two — oh wait, look at the URL)…August 24! By George, I think I’ve solved the mystery!

No, not really. I have no idea what’s going on. An announcement of a full-blown reunion tour? A new album? Dave Chappelle’s birthday party?

To add some intrigue to the investigation, the sly ”researchers” at Wikipedia have dug up this little tidbit: "The website is registered to Live Nation Worldwide, Inc. Live Nation owns Alpine Valley Music Theatre, which has been rumored to be hosting a RATM show on August 24, 2007.”

Pretty impressive, buddies. But I also trusted you when you said Sinbad was dead. Fool me once…

Okay, PopWatchers, help me out here: What the hell’s going on? More importantly, what do you hope is going on?

i’m hoping it’s the day that tom morrello announces that he’s running for president in ‘08.

There was a rumour floating for a while that RATM would play Alpine Valley in Wisconsin on that date (the 24th, I mean). I would assume that’s what’s going on, or at least that that’s the opening night of a full tour. I guess we’ll have wait until Monday to find out.

RAGE ROCKS! I hope that they get back together. YAY!

Anything less than the announcement of a full-blown reunion tour or a new album would be a dissappointment given this website’s hype.

According to the Alpine Valley site, there’s nothing going on that night. On 8/25 Dave Mathews is playing there with the Roots. That said, 8/24 IS a Friday. But why wait so long to announce the show? Even a huge band’s going to take a few weeks to sell out their stash of tickets.
My guess is that this is just a rumor. Besides, Rage has no connection to Wisconsin, do they? Alpine’s a great ampitheater, but the World Music theater outside Chicago, Wolftrap or the Nissan Pavilion outside of DC or Giants Stadium all seem to me like better bets for this band.
All said, I really dug rage. They played in Lotsofpoploosers ‘93 and it was a pretty impressive set. A return to form for them in this current era might strike a chord with a new generation.

RATM does have a connection to Wisconsin – Tom Morello is from Libertyville, and that is about 1 hr away from Alpine. His mom actually introduced them at the concert – It was unforgettable!!!
