Okay, kids! Having combed through my captivating transcripts from the fuchsia carpet at last night’s MTV Movie Awards — which, let me say, I was unaware was essentially a giant walking Transformers ad until I got home and watched my DVR — I have two Q&As for ya. The first is with Justin Long, who got his break on NBC’s dearly departed Ed, took the lead in former EW music critic David Browne’s favorite movie of all time, Jeepers Creepers, and stars in this summer’s most anticipated license plate slogan, Live Free or Die Hard — but who you probably know best as the Mac guy. Confirming my theory that the celebs in attendance were told how to dress to coordinate with the evening’s color scheme, Long arrived in a hot pink shirt and black tie, sporting a very nice and pretty blond girlfriend, and dallied long enough to provide me with the most entertaining conversation I had all night. Unless you count the one where Jon Voight was condescending to me, which I don’t. (And yes, I’m just going to keep bringing up that Jon Voight conversation.)
After the jump, Justin settles one of the summer’s biggest cage matches: Long vs. LaBeouf in the battle for scrawny action hero supremacy, and reveals an obsession that means he’d probably fit right in here at PopWatch…
Entertainment Weekly: How’s my buddy John Hodgman?
Justin Long: John is awesome. We’re gonna start a couple more Mac ads in a bit.
EW: How long can you ride this cash cow?
JL: Oh, years! Nay, decades! I don’t know, they’re just so fun and easy to do, I feel like why not. Until another major company starts knocking on my door to hawk their product.
EW: You actually have a movie to promote but everyone down the line is screaming “Mac Guy! Mac Guy!”
JL: Yeah.
EW: What’s your opinion on that?
JL: I don’t care. They can call me Douchebag, or Hey Monkey Boy! Like, I don’t really care. This is all so bizarre anyway. If my parents or good friends start calling me Mac Guy then I’ll get worried. Then it might affect me. But I refer to them as photographers. Hey, Photo!
EW: In a battle between you and Transformers star Shia LaBeouf, the other scrawny action movie star of the summer — not that you’re scrawny — who would win?
JL: I think Shia would definitely kick my ass.
EW: He has some height on you, I think.
JL: No, I feel like he’s definitely — wait, does he have height on me?
EW: Maybe just a little.
JL: He’s younger. He’s a better actor. I don’t know. I feel like he would out-act me and, like, beat me up with his chops. I think Shia’s awesome. I think he would probably win, right? [asks girlfriend, who does an admirable job of not responding.] He would do like a monologue and I’d be so transfixed by it, I’d be dazed, and he’d just start punching me in the balls. He’d be pummeling my — I want you to write this. He’d be pummeling my balls.
EW: Okay, I’ll write that. It’s a family magazine.
JL: You’re welcome for that sound bite.
EW: Thank you. So, because it’s Must List season, I gotta ask: What is your current pop culture obsession?
JL: Oh, God. What am I into? S—. [asks girlfriend again] What do we like? I have no mind of my own. I have to refer to my girlfriend.
Girlfriend: Uh, disturbing videos on YouTube?
JL: Yeah! We’re obsessed with YouTube.
Girlfriend: Funny or Die.
JL: Funny or Die is great. I watch Pearl maybe once a day.

Justin Long seems like a cool dude.
When he and Bruce Willis came out to present…whatever the hell it is they presented, I half expected them to launch into a Mac/PC routine with Bruce Willis as PC…of course, if Bruce Willis WERE PC he wouldn’t take any of Mac’s smugness and would probably punch him right in the chops.
The Mac guy is the most annoying hipster doofus ever.
Here’s how those ads would go in real life:
PC: Hi, I’m a PC.
Mac: And I’m a Mac…so, whatcha doing PC
PC: Oh, I’m playing video games.
Mac:…oh…uh…uh….ummm…I can play quake 2???…and sometimes people make games for me…on occasion…..I’m sad now.
What I wouldd really like to see is a play by play of Whitney’s conversation with Jon Voight. He seems like such a jerk !

I think Justin Long’s cool, but he’s totally right about Shia! That kid has what it takes to be a major star (yes, even the looks! I think he’s very attractive in a quirky, “nice Jewish boy” way)…I just hope he doesn’t let his increasing success get to his head, & I hope he doesn’t become obsessed with becoming a celebrity, like most actors his age today…
Enough with the stupid MAC ads, I will NEVER buy a MAC now! The PC guy is cool but Justin Long is such an annoying hipster I want to punch him!

Justin vs. Shia? Oooh that’s hard. I heart them both so much. I don’t think Justin is a hipster I don’t even see where people get that. Did he wear a white belt once or something? Anyways, I loved the Transformers in elementary school but I have no idea why it’s a movie. And I’d rather see Willis in another Die Hard, than see another Rocky, Rambo or Indiana Jones (though that’s not saying much)so as far as summer movies go. Justin wins. But they both live in my heart.
I totally agree with Ceballos. Willis would knock Mac out even if he were PC. And even though I think Justin is funny and cute, I’ve LOVED..and I mean LOVED Shia Labeouf, since the movie Holes and through all of those ridiculous hair cuts.

Jeepers creepers, I just love Justin Long! Kept watching Ed even when it was going downhill, all for my JL fix. I’m a loyal PC user, and think the ads are a bit annoying, but that doesn’t lessen my fangirl affection for Justin Long.
What’s with the Mac hating? Bill Gates is a tool who puts out a very bad product. Vista? Piece of junk. It’s like using dial-up again. Even if you upgrade, it’s STILL slow as molasses. Granted, Steve Jobs is a pompous pussbag, but dang if his product line isn’t spotless. And who still plays games on computers anymore? Seriously.

Justin Long was at his best in “waiting”, the ensemble comedy that’s gone painfully overlooked. He’s a great “straight man” in that comedy of wackos.
Anyone else getting sick of those “I’m a mac” ads? Now that my Ipod’s on the fritz, Apple is starting to bug me more than Microsoft.
Justin Long will always be that dorky fanboy from Galaxy Quest to me – that was such a hilarious movie.

I loved that movie! The fanboy character was spot on and well played, but it never hit me that he was the fanboy! Totally agreed, that’s Justin Long’s best.role.ever.
…the best part is, at a crucial moment where Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver’s characters need him, his mom forces him to take out the trash.
Long was his best in Waiting. But some of the raunchy jokes could have been toned down. My brother used to be a waiter at Applebees, and he said that some of the stuff that went on in the kitchen really does happen if you piss off the chef and the waiters.
I’m a very uncool grandmother, but I loved the Galaxy Quest movie and thought that Justin Long did a perfect job in his role as the eager, a bit nerdy but brilliant fan.
