Three albums I’m loving are available to stream from AOL Music this week, campers:
- Avril Lavigne’s The Best Damn Thing, which is not technically the best damn thing, but is still a lot of fun, and the hand-clapping and hollabacking is way more entertaining to me than the dour depression of Under My Skin. I didn’t think her SNL performance was all that compelling — thank god for backup singers — and I’m starting to wonder if she is capable of expressing a vigorous emotion about anything, ever… but I can’t help myself. I love the kid.
- Ryan Shaw’s debut, This is Ryan Shaw: I had a publicist begging me to pull this record out of the stack and give it a listen, which I finally got around to doing yesterday, only to wish I’d done it sooner. He’s got a first-class soul voice. I think this might be what John Mayer wishes he sounds like when he sings. (He’s scheduled to perform Friday morning on Martha, after which, no doubt, Ms. Stewart will teach him how to make petits fours.)
- The Noisettes, What’s the Time, Mr. Wolf?, a long-anticipated full-length from one of them British buzz bands. I saw them live at SXSW two years ago and marveled at their bizarre lineup: A drummer who looks like a My Morning Jacket refugee, a guitarist who could moonlight with Marilyn Manson, and lead singer/bassist Shingai Shoniwa, who vamped and growled around the stage like the love child Grace Jones and Henry Rollins never had. It’s aggressive, jangly post-punk, and you Yeah Yeah Yeahs fans going through withdrawal could do worse.

Everything about Avril screams (better than what she calls singing) fake, over-produced and confirms her status as a product with a rockin’ grrrl image.

Like you, Whit, I have always loved Avril. She is a guilty pleasure of mine since Ske8ter Boi, and the new single ‘Girlfriend’ continues her streak.

Bravo on the Ryan Shaw recommendation, Whitney. I found him on iTunes and thought his whole CD was FANTASTIC. It’s so good to see that truly terrific vocalists can still get out there.

I’ve been spreading the word all week about this Ryan Shaw CD -to the point my friends ask if I’m being paid by the artist. No such luck! I just love great music! And this music will cross over all the genres and ages!

I honestly can say I can’t wait to see this concert live DVD. I did not get to go to her show which I really wish I had did but now it’s coming true as I get to see her show on DVD. I saw her preview on her site of the DVD which was very cool. A little of Girlfriend then the whole live song of sk8or boi which was so cool , She thank her fans so nicely which was a nice thing. Well I think this is a must have for every Avril fan out there. I mean 14.00 how can u go wrong at least we are not paying over 20.00 for this DVD worth the money pick it up bottom line is Avril rocks and she so awesome live GO AVRIL!!!
