Strange Bedfellows: Karen O. and Kool Keith

K_lAs the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup so aptly teaches us, mashing together two disparate things can often create a wonderous new entity. This important lesson can also be applied to pop culture, as proved by the unlikely pairing of Kool Keith and Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on the song "Teaser."

Apparently, "Teaser" was recorded back in 2005 for Deep Throat vs. Lialeh, an album that was to feature artists conducting a "musical-type battle" between the 1974 porn flick Deep Throat and the first major black porn film, Lialeh. Somehow, amazingly, the ambitious project seems to have been aborted, leaving "Teaser," which showed up on the Internet just this week, as the only known evidence that it ever existed. It’s a great example of "better late than never," though, and the best thing that Kool Keith has done in quite some time.

Love him or hate him, Keith is a freak, and a prolific one at that, and it’s been difficult to justify searching for the "genius" buried ineach of the increasingly lackluster releases he’s put out since 1997’s Dr. Octagonecologyst and 1999’s Black Elvis. It turns out all the guy needed was the pop sensibility of bouncy indieboho babe Karen O. singing about "wazz… bewwy, straw… bewwy" in herice cream to make his weirdness feel fresh and funky once again.

On the flipside, "Teaser" is the most fun thing Karen O. has done since the Yeah’s first LP Fever to Tell. Mostly, it’s because she only had to sing the hook, so the thin, sing-songy  pop that made Show Your Bonesa bit monotonous (yeah, I said it — it’s like a boring No Doubt record)actually serves as a perfectly sweet complement to Keith’s warped rhymes. As a poster on Idolator so eloquently said of this song, "I’m not saying it’s the f—ing White Album, but let’s park the high horses and chill out for a second." It’sdefinitely enough to make me curious for the first time in ages aboutwhat Keith and Karen are up to — or at least keep an eye out for moretracks from the aborted porn battle album project.

First, thanks for the track brother! Nothing beats the smell of a fat download in the morning.
Black Elvis was a classic! The track is phat and as a fan of “classic porn” (My old roomate, a girl, used to screen 70’s porno flicks for her buddies to laugh and smacktalk over), I know that the music behind Deepthroat is particularly appealing for this sort of project.
Notably absent is the “bong smoking” sound that’s so popular in the movie. Awww the rehashed 70’s!
We need more of this album superfast. yummy peanut butter cup indeed…

Fever To Tell “monotonous”. Please tell me that wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.

I loved Dr. Octagonecologyst and Fever to Tell, but the half-baked sexual metaphor here sounds more suited to Peaches than Karen O.
Ep, you should see if you can market that idea to the Spice channel or something. Like Mystery Science Theater but with porno!

Dr. Octagonecologyst performs an exam on Karen O.! What a great way to start a Monday morning. The track was pretty cool, with a nice bass/guitar beat, and funky, energetic vocals. Kool Keith’s rhyme was a bit disappointing though – I feel like this is more of a Karen O.’s show that Doc Ock produced.

Mark Bruno needs some rectal rebuilding. The Return of Dr. Octagon was the most exciting and original rap album last year. In a world of youngs, yungs, and lils, we need a hero to stop the Sucka MCs. And that hero is… a gorilla driving a pickup truck.

A bit odd, but wholly enjoyable and funky. Karen O is absolutely my favorite performer. And Show Your Bones is the more inventive and euphoric set of tracks of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs collection. Not necessarily the topic, but I’ll definitely defend my favorite music any day of the week.

Hey, speaking of Peaches, am I the only one that really, really hates her? I mean, the not-so-subtle sexual innuendo has been done already…Liz Phair anyone?

  • furry_tom

I thought a couple of her songs were decent, Lovertits and F**k the Pain Away, but over the course of an entire album it just becomes grating.
Caleb, you’re not a fan of Art Star?
ARRRTTTTTTT STAAARRRRR do do do do do do do do do

Agreed with Tom that Lovertits and F*ck the Pain away are both really catchy, but the rest of the album feels like a lame attempt to rehash the Lords of Acid. Still, F*ck the pain away was good enough to be in “Lost in Translation” AND “With my Little Eye”.
Agreed that the “woman as sex goddess” theme reached a peak (pardon the pun) years ago, when the Herbalizer did “the Sensual Woman”.
Still, it’s hard to oppose a song that preaches promiscuity from a female’s perspective…
Oh, and Tom, I totally LOVE the idea of an MST3k for “classic” porn. Something like that could be done on HBO or Skinemax, if the really naughty bits are taken out. It worked for Flesh Gordon anyway…

  • Not Again

Oh yeah, the Lords. Who could forget:
“Darling, come here, f*ck me up the…”
Maybe 1992 is when it peaked.

  • Ep sato

This is odd: Per Wikipedia, Peaches and Karen O got together and did a track for the Jackass 2 soundtrack. Maybe Karen O heard some Peaches and decided to follow suit?
What else IS in the teaches of peaches?

  • Not Again

An awful song that made it on the “Mean Girls” soundtrack, I think…
