Snap judgment: Kelly Rowland's "Like This"

Kelly_l_3Oh PopWatchers, it’s the end of the week, and I’m as spent as T-Boz andChili’s latest royalty check, but a little bird on the PopWatch messageboards (Phil!) alerted me to the fact that Kelly Rowland’s long-awaitednew single, ”Like This,” (featuring Eve) is streaming at AOL Music, and I didn’t want to let it wait till Monday. Of course, now that I’vetaken the time to listen to it, I kinda wish I’d held off.

Look, I’m not saying "Like This" has nothing to recommend it. It’s gota bouncy enough beat, and a "ladies leave your man at home" vibe that’sreminiscent of Destiny’s Child’s "Jumpin’, Jumpin’,"but aside from the bridge, the vocal could’ve been handled by prettymuch any female singer on the charts today — from Ciara to Ashanti tothat dreaded she-beast Paris Hilton. And shouldn’t a singer of Kelly’scaliber — who’s thrilled and delighted us on everything from "Survivor" to "Girl"– deliver something a little more distinctive for a lead single? OhKelly, I wanted you to bring the noise, make me lose my breath…hit mehard, make me lose my breath! But all I’m doing is sighing. Click here to listen, and tell me, what’s your take, PopWatchers?

    It doesn’t grab me.

Nothing original. It sounds like so many others. Why was she so desperate for an album? The repetition really stinks.

I like it. I can definitely tell it’s Kelly singing. She’s not using the full power of her voice, but the restrained vocal works for this song. How much you wanna bet she’ll hit it hard with her next single?

Heard the song and thought it sounded like every other song on the radio today. BORING!

  • PS

I had to light a scented candle after listening to this stinker.

Not a fan… and honestly, is correct pronunciation really that difficult?

This song makes me want to learn the lyrics, whip out the video camera, stand in front of the mirror with one hand on my hip and press record. I can see myself uploading this on YouTube and add my talents with the endless other people who have lip synched their way to internet stardom.
I love me some Kelly, I’m glad she’s back; I was kind of worried that she was put in a closet and closed off to the rest of the world since Beyonce appears to be the only member of Destiny’s Child who still records.
…ain’t nobody like me (uh uh uh uh).

Why are singers talking through songs now? I mean i havent heard fergie sing a lick on any of her singles. Even beyonce is buisy shouting on most of her tracks.
Just go out and buy Fantasias album!

Slezak thanks for taking the time to read my posts & start this item because of one of them! I’ve given the song a few more listens & I’m sorry to say I still feel kinda BLAH about it. I mean, seriously, this is the 1st new music we’ve had from both Kelly AND Eve in quite a few years & this is what they serve up?? THE ONLY good news I can attest to is that Kelly has a GREAT track called “Still In Love With My Ex” that is one of the few records Kelly recorded for the new album last year, that her label said would still make the cut on the disc once its released this year. I know Slezak’s buds at Idolator.com had the track up last summer, BUT Grammy award nominated remixer Chris Cox remixed the track into a hands-in-the-air dance floor anthem last Spring when the disc was supposed to drop last Fall (but never did). Please hope Columbia releases that track as her 2nd single off the album this summer, so all y’all can have somethin to shake your rumps to! The dance remix is THAT good.

    Haha, she-beast Hilton. Awesome!

i liked kelly’s new single “like this”
i argee its nothing earth shattering, but its still a solid track, nice beat, cute lyrics. if thers a problem its the fact thats its safe she sings like beyonce. yeah i know she too is destinys child, but as a solo act she needs to create her own idenity because it leaves her open for comparisons. I still think its a great song and look forward to her album

i can’t stop playing this song. GO kelly!

I know that it isn’t all that but you know I really love Kelly much more than Beyonce’s tired and exhaustive “i’m the hottest chick in the game” shitck. She’ s got a bunch of teaser tracks on youtube that are pretty hot. This song is slightly bland though.

    First Beautiful Liar, now this?
Oh its a bad week to be a fan of Beyonce and the Gang.
Kelly sounds groggy on this track. Like she recorded it because it was due the next morning.

  • Corey F.

I agree: blandness all around. I think the market is already overflowing with talented female R&B singers. This doesn’t stand up. The beat is unmemorable. Amerie’s “1 thing” and Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” and “Deja Vu” are much more flattering to the oldschool horns and beat than this version. What baffled me the most is that Kelly repeatly says that she can “bump like this” but I was left waiting for the “lose my breath” ecstasy that was promised, but never delivered.
