Your Morning New Video Roundup Wakeup Call

Categories: Music

Gnarls_lThere have been a lot of musicvideo premieres this week. A lot. And for those ofyou who can’t race home from school to catch your afternoon fill of TRL, we atPopwatch have searched far and wide to bring you the best new music videosaround. (Actually, I just picked a few I really, really liked.) Enjoy!

”Can’t Forget About You”: Nas and Chrisette Michele
Nas’ nostalgic storybook rhymesare given the red carpet treatment in this beautifully made video thatalso features a lovely chanteuse by the name of Chrisette Michele (a risingstar, from the looks of it.) It’s the perfect send up to a greatcity and great music. Watch till the end for a lovely surprise centered on thetrack’s ”Unforgettable” sample.

”Bird Flu”: M.I.A.
Sri Lankan via London rapper M.I.A. returns with theinfectious (no pun intended) "Bird Flu," a fast paced and colorfulvideo filmed in South Asia with adorable kids as phenom dance extras. Hopefully, another album will followshortly.

”Smiley Faces”: GnarlsBarkley
Gnarls Barkley latest video (pictured) plays like acheeky, Zelig-like mockumentary and places the quirky duo at the scene of nearly every musically groundbreaking moment from the last century. While the video isfarce, the group’s mainstay presence in music today is not; they’re stillmaking interesting clips and releasing singles from a debut album that’s beenout for almost a year. (Well, the clip’s been lurking on YouTube for months, but it’s new to MTV, at any rate.) Love the faux-interview cameos from Dennis Hopper and Dean Stockwell — hey, it’s almost a Blue Velvet reunion!

Any other new videos catch youreye?

I really like the NAS track! Cool shout out at the end!

That Gnarls clip has been around forever. I don’t think it getting play on MTV warrants listing it as new since no one goes to MTV to hear music.
Their newest clip is for Who Cares, and even that’s been out for a couple months:

But here are two kicka** videos from the last year, not necessarily new, but most everyone has probably never seen them:
    Malajube (Montreal -40ºC)

    Psapp (Tricycle)

    NAS vid was HOT!

I caught the new Killers video yesterday for “READ MY MIND”. Its supposed to be their BIG top 40 hit, that apparently, “When We Were Young” & “Bones” (still my FAVE track off the new disc) were not. So because of it, there is some poor schmuch running around in a big green styrofoam bug (is it a bug??) suit! Yes, I’m sure people are going to be talkin’ bout this video in the next few days. I believe its streaming on Mtv.com!
The Justin video for “What Goes Around…Comes Back Around” premieres today on iTunes? Is that correct, & then Mtv gets to debut it Sunday during their pre-Grammy show? Either way, its a little late, unless its a split video with the next single. The song has been at terrestrial radio since early Dec. & is finally in Billboard’s Top 10…the next single should be lined up with a video & remixes by the 1st week of March…Yes, he’s sold millions of records & downloads, but most pop tracks have a 3 month life these days, regardless of who you are!”Lovestoned” next?

Since I’m from northeast Ohio, I’ll also point out Gil Mantera’s Party Dream. They’re on Pat Carney’s (of the Black Keys) label, although they’re an 80’s retro-electronic duo. Also, I love vocoders.

M.I.A. is the coolest person alive. and I sincerely believe that.

I’m suprised that after all the fuss about Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse’s new material has been neglected.
