Oh. Hold on, let me make sure I’m reading this right. [Wipes sleepy dust from eyes] Yeah, I am. Okay. So since we haven’t had a band reunion announcement in a while [coughs, shifts apathetically in seat], I guess you’ll all be so very thrilled to hear that Wham! are probably getting back together.
[Crickets]
All theories about certain former members of Wham! having a large number of legal bills to pay aside, why do you think these guys are waking up and go-go-ing again all of a sudden? Did George take pity on Andrew? Has it taken this long for George to track down Andrew’s phone number? And in a year that’s already seen reunions from the Stooges, the Police, and, well, like, everyone else ever, can you possibly bring yourself to care?
Personally, all this reunion nonsense reminds me of one time when Iwas ice skating at Rockefeller Center with my mom, and the musicswitched to "You Raise Me Up" and we looked in the middle of the rinkand some dude was proposing to his lady friend. We awwwed andclapped, and went back to skating. Not three minutes later, they startedplaying "You Raise Me Up" again, and sure enough, someone else was onhis knee at center ice. Fifteen minutes after that the song came on a third time, and everyone groaned.
So I will say to the boys from Wham! the same thing I wanted to sayto Proposing Guy No. 3: Dude, it’s one thing to be the second proposal onthe ice, but beyond that you gotta ask yourself if maybe there’s abetter time for what you’re trying to do, ya know?
[Confidential to R.E.M.: Sure, go for it. It could only help matters.]

oh i care whitney. this child of the 80s cannot get enough of the reunions/tours.
Doesn’t George Michael’s chart topping greatest hits come out here in the U.S. next week? I’m interested in grabbing that (eventhough I could have sworn Sony released a double dsic best-of back in 1998) since I’ve heard some of the new tunes that have been released in the U.K. in the past few months, amongst George’s naps at the wheels of cars. But as far as Wham!? I don’t have to hear “LAST CHRISTMAS” again til next November….
Is a band responsible for a couple of throw away hits in the 80s deserving of a super-hyped reunion? No.
I care! I just downloaded a Wham! song a few days ago. And can you beat “Careless Whisper” or “Last Christmas” for being chock full of 80s nostalgia? NO!
when i heard about it, i thought this was a bit creepy since earlier today, me and my friends were singing this song. well… great for them.
This 32-year-old had all of their albums on cassette and knows all the words to every song. Hell eeeyeah I’m excited. I hope they come to a town near me with the tour!
I definitly care, George is one of the finest male vocalists around and don’t be hatin’ on Andrew, Whitney LOL! The dude races cars and married a Bananarama member, not too shabby for an ex-80’s teen idol…at least he’s not in rehab.
Pastorek I LOVE YOU!!!!!! I was not a fan of Wham! at all, but I did like the FAITH album and “Praying for Time” but your article is so funny I have to tell you I think your writing is awesome!!!!!!
I can’t get enough of the reunions, myself! I’m in 80’s heaven! But please, no REM! THey were a critics’ band; no one else really cared.
Andrew Ridgley never really sang. How can the reunite, they might as well just put a poster up of his face and let George do all the work.
some reunions have had staying power, and others fade, this will not be a lasting union.
whitney–where is chart flashback? haven’t had one in a few weeks!!!!!
When did REM break-up, necessitating a reunion? A band member leaving years ago and the band releasing subsequent albums doesn’t constitute a break-up, does it? Oh well, apparently only critics care about these distinctions. Now that I think about it, there sure were a lot of critics who bought “Document”, “Green”, “Automatic for the People”, “Monster”…Millions, in fact…
Yes, yes, yes!!! I am soooo there!
All right Winn, point to you, REM did break through and sell millions; I can’t deny it. They did annoy the h–l out of me though; mainly Michael Stipe. They are always played on VH1 Classic, my friend; I always reach for the clicker as soon as ‘The One I love’ or ‘Stand’ comes on.
Ok, any fan of this item on the PopWatch blog, I IMPLORE to go see Music & Lyrics when it opens nest week! Hugh Grant as a washed up 80’s pop star trying to resurrect his career was not only enjoyable, but SO much better than that Diane Keaton romantic comedy I caught last week. I assure you, if a wham! reunion excites you, go check out MUSIC & LYRICS next week when it opens in theaters!
oh I care too! Anything that gets George back to tour in the US is A-ok with me! Maybe I can finally have that Duran Duran/Wham! double bill that Ive waited 20 years for!!!!
