What were your favorite pop-culture holiday gifts?

105316__sandwich_lMy apologies if the PopWatch posts come in at a slower-than-usual rate today, but it’s not easy blogging when you’re slowly emerging from a cookie-induced coma and still smarting from a brutally close runner-up finish in the family’s annual table-hockey tournament. Not to worry, though, I’m taking comfort in all the groovy gifts given and received this Christmas.

In the former category, I got a special thrill from introducing my sci-fi-loving sister Kathy to season 1 of Battlestar Galactica on DVD, and giving my adorable niece Ava Rae the world’s coolest pop-up book, One Red Dot. (Is it wrong of me to admit I almost kept it for myself?) Still, my biggest holiday sacrifice was surrendering my own copy of Candi Staton’s self-titled Astralwerks compilation to my mom; after she discovered the parenthetical joy of “I’m Just a Prisoner (of Your Good Lovin’),” “I’d Rather Be an Old Man’s Sweetheart (Than a Young Man’s Fool),” and “How Can I Put Out the Flame (When You Keep the Fire Burning)” in our car’s CD player on Christmas Eve, what choice did I have but to wrap it up and give her the gift of ’70s soul?

As for loot that ended up in my stocking, I can’t wait for the weekend, so I can take Marcus Samuelsson’s The Soul of a New Cuisine: A Discovery of the Foods and Flavors of Africa (a gift from my brother Andy) into the kitchen and get cookin’. And in the unbearable cuteness category, my husband’s gift of a “Let’s Make Sandwiches” T-shirt (seen here on a far comelier model than me) from Nataliedee.com will have me grinning delightedly well into 2007. Hurrah for animated loaves of bread!

Anyhow, enough about the stuff under my tree, what were the best pop-culture-themed gifts you gave and received this holiday season?

Between the Fantasia CD, the Dreamgirls soundtrack, the Margaret Cho Box Set, the Chicago 10-year Anniversary Box Set, the Avenue Q book, and the first two season DVDs of So You Think You Can Dance (bootlegs, of course) I got for Christmas, I think it’s safe to say that after 6 years, my parents have finally come to terms with the fact that I’m gay.

My brother just got me a talking Mr. Hankey. We both love South Park, but I can’t bring this one to my cubicle, where Towelie, Tweek, Butters (as Stupendous Man), and little versions of Cartman, Stan, and Kenny currently reside (all gifts from various people over the years). I’ll have to keep it home.

My fiance gave me an Hector Lavoe CD. My sister in law gave me “Nacho Libre”, a movie that had inspired many inside jokes with my fiance. I loved both gifts.
I gave out a Tivo to my stepdad, a copy of “the dog Whisperer” to my spoiled dog enabling mom. Oooh, I gave the remaining Battlestar Galactica boxed sets to my father-in-law, which is one of the many things we’ve been able to bond because of.
The top dog was the Remote Control Wolverine motorcycle I gave my nephew. The toy was purchased in 2002 and stored for several years in its original box until the time was right. Between the blinking lights and Wolverine’s “don’t get in the way of my claws bub”, this was a mega hit.

for “pop culture related gifts” my parents got me the friends version of scene it? and “little miss sunshine”.
I got my boyfriend a framed poster of “it’s a wonderful life” as one of his gifts, as well as tickets to see jerry seinfeld in a month, and his mom got me an audrey hepburn themed group of presents including ‘funny face’ and a book about her.

I got my brother in law a Caddyshack DVD (pronounced by him as one of the funniest movies EVER); my sister and I chipped in for a video ipod for my dad, i also gave my dad jenny lewis’ cd; i gave my sister a book about Sumerians with the opening to Monty Python’s The Final Cut written into the front (nothing happened in 787, not in England anyway…yes, in Sumeria…) and we got my youngest sister GnR greatest hits and guitar songbook (which I hate to say is retro to her! She wasn’t even born when “Sweet Child o’ Mine” came out…

My favorite given was Sex and the City, Season 1 on DVD, given to myself. I’m a single mom and I started buying myself presents for under the tree when my 4 year old (now 10) asked if I was bad because Santa didn’t bring me anything. The best that I received was finding out that I’m auditioning for the World Series of Pop Culture Season 2 in February (woo hoo!). Wish me luck!!!!

Natalie Dee is so so, but her husband Drew and his Toothpaste for Dinner comics are something worth checking out. Much better wit.

I restrained myself earlier this year so that I could receive the third and final (sniff) season of Arrested Development and the second season of Veronica Mars on dvd. I also got what looks to be a very interesting read entitled Special Topics in Calamity Physics.

My best friend gave me the Heroes T-shirt (the front says “Save the Cheerleader…”, the back says “Save the World”) and the new, super-delux Oldboy DVD. Between that, season 2 of Grey’s Anatomy, the final season of Alias, and season 3 of Nip/Tuck, I’m looking forward to a relaxing New Year’s weekend on the sofa.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus set 3, Alfred Hitchcock Presents season 2, Psycho (finally) Life of Brian, and of course SNL season 1 and a wii, these should keep me lauging and screaming but most of all after going to the hospital on Christmas Day for my 2-year old cousin that lives with us she’s fine and coming home happy sniff sniff…

I bought my very fortunate child “Family Guy” season 4 on DVD, and my lovely daughter gave me something called “Cat Butt Gum” in return. I’m not sure if that was a “thanks, Dad” or not…
