The '06 diamond ad: Gorgeous or gag-inducing?

Diamonds_l

If you’ve turned on your television at any point in the past two months, then you’ve most likely been subjected to this holiday season’s diamond commercial.

I hate it.

Okay, I take it back. I love it. It makes me cry every time. It’s 90 percent the song: Cat Power’s cover of Cat Stevens’ "How Can I Tell You" (watch a Stevens performance here). Cat Power’s version is so whispery and tender that it feels like a hug and a love letter all at once. And it’s 10 percent the dude — is he not just the cutest thing ever? Closing the window to keep the cold out, fetching the necklace that he’s hidden in the grandfather clock, putting the jewels on his lady, and then pretending to be asleep when she wakes up in squinty shock. I’m practically welling up just thinking about it.

Anyway, riddle me this, PopWatchers: Do I have a pitifully low crying threshold, or are there others out there who’ve teared up over the 2006 diamond ad? Tell me I’m not alone!

Blech! I love this song by Cat Stevens and this commercial completely wrecks it by the way that it is sung.

Sorry, Helin, but I have to go with the pitifully low crying threshold. The song drives me nuts every time I hear it – the whisperiness of it just seems like overkill on the sentimentality, and I guess I just don’t find the guy to be all that cute.
Ah well, to each their own, eh?

    i hadn’t seen that before. sniff sniff….

It doesn’t make me cry, but it does make me smile. I thought the commercial got the point of the gift without suggesting that Ms. Perfect only swaps fluids with Mr. Perfect when a diamond enters the equation. It’s tender without being shmaltzy, IMHO.
And I’m glad to finally know who covered the song– I love the way she sings, “…when I can’t… think-of right-words… to say…”

Every time I see that commercial, all I can think is that if someone put something on my neck like that in the middle of the night, I’d probably think there was a spider crawling on me, start screaming and throw the necklace across the room before I even realized what was going on. I’m such a romantic…

I had the same thought as Stacey. Whenever I see this ad, I keep thinking, wow, I would have knocked that off of me. That would not work on me.

I have a pitifully low crying threshold, but this didn’t get me.

Terrible ad, and I would be embarassed to admit it was my creation (were I the ad agency that created it).

I kind of like the commercial. I like the way at the end, he’s faking sleep and then all of a sudden you see a hint of the smile just before it ends.

The only thing that moved in my was my pants; when I saw the husband fake sleeping, it made ME want to thank him for the diamonds.

  • amanda

  • Kathy

Oh, the other day, I was just relaxing after a long day, and I tried tried to watch television, but this commercial followed me to every fracking channel, I even tried watching MONK (which I never watch) but to no avail, there it was… I was forced to watch porn instead. Anyone who cries to this commercial does not only have a low crying threshold, but they definetely are in need of getting themselves a life.
