According to a TiVo-conducted poll, Katie Couric’s last day on Today was the most unforgettable TV moment of 2006. We’d take this survey more seriously if it was TiVo revealing its most rewound moments of the year, but you know we love a good debate list, so here goes:
1. "Katie Couric’s last day on Today" — Which we commemorated with a live-blog and a photo tribute.
2. "Mel Gibson’s interview with Diane Sawyer after his DWI arrest" (pictured) — Immortalized with our play-by-play of Day 1 and Day 2. (And by the way, my sister’s retriever Riggs is still rolling around in bear poop.)
3. "Oprah tells author James Frey he betrayed readers" — And EW’s Ken Tucker and Stephen King told us what they thought about it.
4. "Sara and Grissom get together on CSI" — Am I the only one suprised that this relationship is the kind that garners a YouTube video tribute… to Savage Garden’s "Truly Madly Deeply"?
5. "Faith Hill’s reaction to Carrie Underwood’s win at the CMA Awards" — Shockingly, not that exciting once you get a little distance.
6. "Kirstie Alley’s bikini reveal on Oprah" — I missed it. So these reactions are actually real?
7. "Will & Grace series finale in which their kids start dating" — Now I get it. "Memorable" doesn’t have to mean "good."
8. "Kate and Sawyer get together on Lost" — Launching more mind-blowing YouTube tribute videos… set to Enrique Iglesias’ "Hero."
9. "Rosie O’Donnell’s debut on The View" — Apparently, this survey was conducted a while ago.
10. "Connie Chung attempting a sultry serenade of Maury Povich" — Relive it here, but on mute.

My goodness, if these are the best moments of the year in television, then 2006 will go down in history as a particularly bland 365 days!
In my opinion, Katie Couric’s debut as anchor of “The CBS Evening News” was much more significant than her “Today” finale.
As for prime-time TV, what pleased me the most was the unbelievable roller-coaster ride that was Season 5 of “24.” FOX’s decision to air the series from January to May without a break has influenced the television landscape forever. And it was so satisfying to see Kiefer Sutherland and Co. finally receive their due at the Emmy Awards!
Wow, does anyone else find it depressing that our most memorable TV moments of the year are pretty much just celebrities making fools of themselves? Maybe they should have had two lists: celebrity moments of the year and, you know, actual TV moments of the year (as in, things that happened on our favorite shows, which surely goes beyond Will and Grace, CSI, and Lost).
The season finale of Lost, when Desmond realizes he is responsible for the crash of the plane. And, the Lost episode when Michael kills Ana Lucía and Libby!!
#1 Jim’s confession of love to Pam on The Office. Perfectly acted television.
#2 Josh is told Leo died on The West Wing.
#3 Entire Friday Night Lights pilot.
I second Crystal’s Jim’s-confession-of-love submission. So surprising and moving, and so, so memorable.

I can’t believe Jim and Pam’s kiss on the Office didn’t make the list.
The Battlestar Galactica dropping out of orbit into an on-fire atomspheric freefall while launching its fighters directly into a firefight before “jumping” back out into space moments before crashing onto the planet below.
Geeky? Yes. Unforgettable/Incredible/Fantastic? Absolutely.
I totally agree with apk and Jen, I would also add the inmates making it over the wall on Prison Break. And I can’t believe no one also mentioned Edgar’s death scene in 24. He wasn’t one of my favorite characters, but that and Battlestar’s moment were the two best of the year by far, they beat any of the celebrity related junk mentioned in the list.
Not sure if this was during 2006 or 2005, but Whitney Houston shouting “Kiss My Ass!!!!” is the best moment of this year, last year or any other year.

I discovered three great shows this year, the Office, Veronica Mars and Studio 60.
But, the best television moment, for me, was the St. Louis Cardinals winning the World Series.
Definitley The Kiss on THE OFFICE.
Not mentioned: Danny DeVito acting a fool on THE VIEW. (And in DECK THE HALLS, but we’re talkin’ TV here).
The Clay Aiken-Kelly Ripa-Rosie O’Donnell affair was my favorite moment, especially Kelly calling The View live to confront Rosie.

Smoky killing Mr. Ecko on Lost. I am still not over it.

The Fight Between Dan and Captain Turner on Deadwood.
After four episodes of build up, it was one of the most violent, brutal, gut wrenchingly real fights ever put on film. And the looks passed between Al and Hearst, the way all slowly looks away as Dan starts to lose…and that look on dan’s ace when he rises up from the mud…My god, one of the best moments on Tv EVER.
PopWatch I’m ashamed of you. Jim’s declaratio of love to Pam surely rates being in the top ten.
I have to agree with whoever said Edgar’s death on 24. The season opener was a shocker as well, but Edgar’s death was much more emotional.
Jim telling Pam he loves her on The Office. Hands down the best tv moment this year.
What the h*ll? I am amazed they didn’t include Chris Daughtry’s shocking elimination on American Idol.
The best TV moments are the “24″’s deaths of Ex-President David Palmer and CTU computer geek Edgar. My mouth drop to the f**cking floor and stayed there for the rest of the season when I saw The Mr. Ex-President shot in the head. To me, it felt like someone had actually assassinated The President (not Bush, Clinton). And how can we forget Edgar? Poor, sweet lovable Edgar. My family and I cried for days as he was running towards the conference room. And watching Mary Lynn Rajskub facial expression as Chloe was Emmy-, SAG- and Golden Globe-worthy. How dare they not nominate her?!
