Snap Judgment: Grammy nominations

Categories: Grammys, Music

10370__bob_dylan_lThe acclaim keeps rolling in for Mary J. Blige. After scoring nine trophies at the Billboard Awards on Monday and two at the American Music Awards last month, the 35-year-old R&B singer has just racked up another eight opportunies to win big at next Feb. 11’s Grammy Awards. Also making decent showings at this morning’s announcement were the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with six nods, and James Blunt, the Dixie Chicks, John Mayer, Danger Mouse, Prince, Rick Rubin, will.i.am, and John Williams — all with five noms each. (Check out the full list of nominees.)

But enough about the winners-to-be. While deserved, Blige’s kudos were hardly unexpected. More interesting are some of the omissions: Bob Dylan’s critically praised Modern Times did get some love in a couple smaller rock and folk categories, but totally missed out on the biggies (namely, Album of the Year and Song of the Year). And poor, poor Nickelback: They’re the biggest-selling rock act of 2006 and didn’t get a single nomination.

What are your thoughts on this year’s ballot? Discuss…

boohoo for nickelback. i actually can’t stand them because their music is generally the same song, ‘cept for “animals” that song rocked. but like everybody says they are the band that consistently sells out stadiums, yet no one knows a soul that listens to them.
as for bob, that flippin sucks. modern times was beautiful.

The Dixie Chicks should win Record, Song and Album…they have the most consistent album, filled with their amazing three-part harmony and lyrics dealing with different issues.Besides “Not Ready to Make Nice” is really a well written song. All the support they have by NARAS members is a plus.
Very excited to see the love for Mary, James Blunt, and Joh Mayer.

Best news: Constantly ignored and criminally underrated, Depeche Mode has scored a nom. Kudos, guys!

  • Ed

I hope the Dixie Chicks lose big time, their 15 minutes of fame has expired.
What about Christina Agulara, did she get any nods?

  • Al

I’m actually pretty pleased, it’s a good mixed bag of nomations, but i’m totally psyched about the Dixie Chicks’ nominations!!
I am so happy for the Chicks, they got all of the big 3 noms (Album, Record & Song of the year!!!!)
I really hope Toby Keith is in the audience and I really want to see his face when/if they win. This is an incredible vindication for them.
The only awkward moment might come if they win Country Album of the Year. I’m not even sure THEY would want to win that one.

Hey Michelle, John Williams did not get five nominations. He ONLY got four.

Enough with trashing the Dixie Chicks already. Let’s move on.

If this were 1996 then YES,Bob Dylan would have been nominated for Album of the Year, like Steely Dan did a few years ago, but I think the days of those kinda albums getting nominated in the Album of the Year category are LONG since gone & with good reason.
Loving the fact that Imogen Heap got recognized and is up for Best New Artist of the Year, eventhough she’ll probably lose, but still nice to see her nominated onto something out side of a Soundtrack!

Rather shocking Modern Times didn’t get more notice. Dylan deserved major category nominations, not out of nostalgia, or recognition of past glories, but because Modern Times is a super-fantasitc, brilliant album. Truly another classic in the man’s impressive body of work.
Oh, and honestly Jenny Lewis’ Rise Up with Fists, might just be the song of the year for me……

  • Auriana

Glad to see John Williams still getting the recognition he deserves. Happy to see Enya and Enigma both scoring nods as well. Now, if only they’d add a J-Pop category. However, I find it a sad, sad day when one sees “My Humps” nominated for a best of anything.

  • RobinG

Auriana, I agree. Also nominated were the Pussycat Dolls! AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!

  • Scott P

It would have been nice to see Muse, who made one of the best albums of they year hands down with “Black Holes and Revelations” get something, but they’re not big enough in America I guess. Oh well.

  • Tim

In the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, Eminem is alternately shaking that and smacking that. I guess he hasn’t really mellowed with age.

  • Cliff

It is beyond ridiculous that Madonna is constantly being left out of the Pop category nominations. She practically invented the modern definition of pop, and embodied it perfectly this (Grammy) year with Hung Up and Sorry.

  • JenJen

I guess Christina got two nominiations, but it should have been more. Her album is brilliant (especially the song “Save me from myself”.) I am surprised that Beyonce was nominated 4 times, being that B’Day’s singles are half the quality of those on her first solo album.

  • Tim

Does anyone take the Grammys serious anymore?

  • DT

If Nickelback ever wins a grammy I will wash my hands of music and give up forever. Wake up people. The emperor has no clothes.

  • Jakeem

What? No nominations at all for the Britpack — Britney, Paris and Lindsay?

  • Winona

I thought the Grammy Awards were for musical artists – yet somehow, the Pussycat Dolls got a Grammy nod. Amazing… otherwise, a good variety of artists nominated. Yay, John Mayer!

  • Alex

The “My Humps’ and The Pussycat Dolls nominations are just an embarassment, but at least there’s no ‘London Bride’ ‘Buttons’ ‘Fergalicious’ or ‘Wind it Up’.
Other than that, the nominations are pretty good….nice seeing some love for Goldfrapp and the Dixie Chicks…would’ve liked to see more for Madonna, Xtina, and Nelly Furtado.
O ya and I’m not feeling Timberlake’s nods either. I would prefer “Back to Basics” for album of the year.

  • Jamie

Where’s the Album of the Year nomination for The Breakthrough… this is as bad a slight as when they passed on Alicia Keys for Album of the Year for Songs…

  • jason

it’s a good year for new artists. nominations were pretty good overall, and mary j. DEFINITELY deserves all the noms. she is wonderful, but she might suffer the “lots of nominations” curse and only come out with a couple. very disappointed christina wasn’t nominated for album of the year, but it’s cool. bob dylan is obviously royalty, but let someone else get some love, just thank God U2 didn’t have anything out this year. also, cool for gnarls barkley, good CD. more to come..

    why did that post twice?

  • Anon

Does anyone else think that it’s strange that Death Cab for Cutie was nominated in the pop performance category?

  • Stephanie Travitsky

Tim, no because the people who give out the awards don’t.
If they did, we would have decent bands like The Shins,Raconeers, Decemberists, OK GO, Muse, and Goldfrapp being nominated.

  • BeezerB

I am kind of shocked that Bob Dylan isn’t up for Album of the Year, but I LOVE that my favourite song of 2006, “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley, is up for Record of the Year! Yay Gnarls Barkley for being so cool!

  • shelby

It is a travesty that Madonna got overlooked in either the pop or other major categories, but instead got two nominations for dance recordings. Her album was a pop and dance masterpiece-with no fillers whatsoever, which received great reviews when it was released.
I mean it’s not a shock, as the Grammy’s are lame anyways. The nominations just show a lack of originality as usual. To nominate the Pussycat Dolls, Black Eyed Peas and Sheryl Crow for the billionth time really says it all.

  • aron

If Gwen and Fergie’s songs were eligible for this years awards, then I’m sure they’d be there-that’s how insignificant the Grammy’s are now. Probably next year we’ll have Wind It Up and Fergalicious competing as record of the year!!! Sooooo sad!

  • Lynny

My only real problem is that The Pussycat Dolls, of all people, got a nomination. YIKES! Talk about a way to kill your credibility.
