Snap judgment: Avril Lavigne's "Keep Holding On"

Categories: Music

I’m not so above it all that I’ll deny tapping my foot when Avril Lavigne’s "Complicated" comes on the radio. But her new single, "Keep Holding On," is, quite simply, a heinoustry. Yes, I know that’s not a real word, but I don’t want to sully the adjective heinous — which has been quite good to me through the years, and deserves a special Emmy for its work in the opening credits of Law & Order: SVU — by associating it with this piece of dreck from the Eragon soundtrack. C’mon, say it with me, "heinoustry!" It’ll distract you from Avril’s lyrics, which (I kid you not) begin with the following words: "You’re not alone/ Together we stand/ I’ll be by your side/ You know I’ll take your hand." (OMG, I think she, like, totally stole that from my eighth-grade Trapper Keeper!) Even worse, Avril sings the word together like it’s pronounced "to-gah-thuh." Seriously, ugh, I have to go chug gin or dip a Q-Tip in Clorox right now and clean my ears till they bleed. And either way, that’s no way to start the morning. Don’t take my word for it, though. "Keep Holding On" is streaming right now at AOL Music. What think ye?

I heard a little of the song the other day. I am not sure yet, Michael, although I DO like Miss Avril overall.

omg that songs totally sucks. that is way below her talents as a singer. it sounds like she is a new singer trying to score a record deal. the whole song has to many gaps between the lyrics. i know she can do better then that. you nailed it when you used the word heinoustry. put this incredible word in the books…lol

I actually like it! It sounds like some of her other work and I like the overall tune of the chorus. Not heinoustry by any means.

I don’t know when or why this song was written but it was clearly selected for the Eragon soundtrack for it’s simplistic and non-descript lyrics. “Keep holding on”, “fight and defend” those lyrics fit the marketing tie in.
Had it been about a heroin addicted stripper who was abused by her daddy, I doubt it would mesh well with (what looks like a terrible) medieval based fantasy dragon quest!
And since it will only play over the final credits you know no one will ever hear it again.

It sounds like all her other stuff to me. Not that that is a good thing. Regarding the pronounciation of together: Have you never heard her sing anything else? She’s Canadian, dude. They sing weird.

  • Vicky

It’s not terrible. I think they made her keep it simple for the kiddies. Tweeny girls need to be able to sing along with this song because the movie looks like it’s for kids anyway. I’ll wait for Avril’s new album. Hopefully that’ll be better.

I haven’t heard the song yet so I can’t agree or disagree, but this post just made me laugh out loud (the trapper keeper line…still giggling). Way to be funny Slezack.

in it’s context it’s fine. it’s a soundtrack song for a family movie, what did you want? it’s not the worst song ever made. take it for what it’s worth.

  • ro

It’s significantly better than the audio abortion that is Gwen Stefani’s “Wind It Up.”

  • jaime

Avril loves Alanis. Remember last year when Alanis did “Wunderkind” for “Narnia”? Yeah, it was a much a better song, this seems like the poor man’s version of that.

  • Q-A

I think it’s way ok. Heinoustry does not apply to this at all! I mean, Jason had a point, it’s for a family movie what were you expecting? Ring the Alarm 2?

  • Bill

Wow – Avril is like, so punk and stuff.
    “Heinoustry” indeed.

  • jo

It’s really not that bad–certainly better than that crappy Jill Sobule song you loved and posted earlier this week!

  • Stephanie M.

That wasn’t too bad…..well- compared to the Taylor Hicks fiasco going on in another post…YIKES! Now thats AWFUL!

  • john

This song is really good!!! This song was written for a movie not her record…. duh…
    Avril’s voice is amazing!

  • Rhonda

childrens soundtracks can have awesome songs. remember “where are you christmas,” from the grinch? that was good vocals, good tune, great writing (SHOUTOUT TO MARIAH)
this song has no tune, awful lyrics, and thats right, A WHINY CANADIAN VOCALIST. slezak, i dont know how you made it through. 30 seconds and i wanted to gouge out someone’s eyes. not mine of course, cuz then i couldnt see my keyboard. but it certainly made me violent. and is that how you want the children to feel? i didnt think so.

I just recently found out that Avril had this new song , “Keep Holding On” so of course I had to find it and listen to it. Before I heard it I read many comments on how horrible it was…many bad reviews. Honestly it is all foolish! I agree with one person on this page…this wasn’t for her album and I found nothing wrong with it. Avril could sing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and my skin would crawl from her amazing voice. Don’t be quick to judge…but what do I know…lol I just really enjoy Avril’s voice, lyrics, attitude, and everything else that makes her great!

  • jjl

I think da songs awesome all dose people who siad it sucked must of had ears of stone!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jen

I almost forgot how much fun it was to ridicule Avril Lavigne. I’m glad she is back with another catastrophy of a song.

  • lola

i hate avril “im so tough, im gonna kick ur butt” labdbduhddb ering….shes a lame..and i hate how she claims shes punk, when she sings pop, and how she always tries to pick fights wit other celebrity when they dont even care for her….and this music is sucks..i wipe my butt wit it

  • Jamie

I LOVE the song, I can’t wait to download it…I also CAN’T wait for the Eragon movie to come out. I’ve read the book three times. My best friend and I are taking off work and getting babysitters so we can go together and see it and have a girls night out! The books are terrific and kudos to Avril for writing a song for the movie version of a book she actually read! Shame on you all for picking on her or the book/movie you don’t know anything about!

  • lindsey

maybe it doesnt have to do with how shes sings at all but maybe about the message it puts across. I think its sweet as hell

  • Jen
