It’s official: Showtime’s Dexter is the best new show of the season that I absolutely will never be able to watch again. I was borderline after last week’s pilot episode, what with the lingering shots of blood splatter and bloodless body parts (I don’t do so good with the hemoglobin, be it there or conspicuously not there). But then I caught the debut of Dexter’s opening credit sequence last night and, well, I just never knew a morning routine — shaving, frying ham, grinding coffee, tying shoelaces — could be so supremely creepy when shot in extreme close-up. (Actually, it really does prove the maxim: everything is at least a little creepy when shot in extreme close-up.) You can find the sequence on the show’s official site (see the ”Good Morning Dexter” link towards the bottom of the home page), though the playback can be herky jerky even on high speed connections.
Anyway, like I said, it’s a terrific show — I found Michael C. Hall an especially mesmerizing presence — but just totally not for me. But what about you? What do you think of those opening credits? Are there other shows that you’ve known were good but just pushed your shudder button a few times too often?

This show is one of the best on TV right now. It’s a cross between American Psycho, CSI and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Perfect for the Halloween season!
Hard to watch but absolutely addictive. My kind of show!
I completely agree with DS who said Dexter is one of the best shows out there and perfect for Halloween season. But come November, me and Dexter are done.
I had dvr’d Dexter. Finally watched it this weekend. Agree, great new show. Now its must see. When its starts to push my shudder button, which it has, I will do as I always have done. P break ! Snacks anyone!
When I first heard about this show I was afraid the host of David Fisher would interfere with the whole serail killer angle, but boy was I wrong! Michael C. Hall is amazing, and I am totally hooked on “Dexter”. (Doesn’t the angry cop kind of remind you of Keith with serious ‘roid rage, though?)
I’m sad because I do not have Showtime but I did get to see the 1st two episodes with Showtime’s free weekend and I am so jonesing for another one. I knew Michael Hall could pull of the task of serial killer with a wierd sense of justice. But alas, it looks like I will have to go buy the book it’s based on and wait for the season to finish so they can put it on DVD or maybe it’ll get enough buzz that they will put the episodes up on itunes.
I tried to watch, but sadly I had read the books. This series is apparently spread out over the first book (not a very long book). The show seems like it is taken word for word from the books. Hopefully when they run through the books after 2 seasons, they will make stuff up – always better for tv.
i totally agree about the opening credits-completely creeped me out! the closeup of the floss cutting off the circulation in his finger-creeeeeepy!
“(Doesn’t the angry cop kind of remind you of Keith with serious ‘roid rage, though?)”
Agreed!
I like the show and it’s good to see Dav…uh, Michael C. Hall on TV again for sure. But I think the last thing we needed was another CSI ripoff. At least Six Feet Under had its originality.
“Dexter” is outstanding! I can’t imagine not tuning in. Creepy? Yes, but it must be seen. CSI ripoff? Please!!! CSI does not feature a CSI member who moonlights as a serial killer…..
Just watched the first couple episodes last night, and all I can say is WOW! Hall is brilliant, and the show only suffers when it gets overly CSI and spends too much time with the severely less talented and WAY less interesting supporting cast. But the scenes with his voiceovers that REALLy focus on Dexter are amazing. Can’t wait for more….
Dexter is most definitely the best new show this season. Michael C. Hall is terrific and the show is addicting. Creepy-absolutely, but highly entertaining. I’m in for the long haul…

A lot of people are missing what this show’s about. right now i’m drunk so i’m not going to do a whole lot better but it’s about family. Disconnection and those emotions which become lost with evolution. A man who collides with who he really is. A man who understands that he must not become that which what history has created. A man who feels closer to a world that has raised him than that world that has created him. This show is a classic example of behavior, of true feeling. I’d believe the writer if he said he had problems growing up. From the creator’s standpoint, characters are real. Most of the pain is real. A good attempt to capture an extreme of human reality.
