'Project Runway': The Keith controversy's smoking gun

91028__document_lLast night’s Project Runway reunion episode was a must-
watch, and not just because Heidi Klum read from EW.com’s interview with Vincent, in which he dissed Tim Gunn. There was also the matter of Keith, who suggested he’d been tossed unfairly because there was nothing in the rules forbidding him to have books of patterns. To which his fellow designers reacted with the dumbfounded shock that would greet, say, the sight of Kate Moss wolfing down a cheeseburger.

Now, PopWatch has exclusively obtained a copy of the relevant letter sent by PR to the contestants specifying what they may not bring to the competition. We’ve reproduced the letter, above, and zoomed in on the pertinent paragraph. As you can see, Keith is correct that it doesn’t mention the word ”books,” but it does say ”patterns” and ”portfolios,” so it’s still hard to imagine how a book of patterns wouldn’t violate that rule.

Setting aside Keith’s other alleged violation (going briefly AWOL), do you think he has a case here? Did he exploit a legitimate loophole, or did he deserve the boot?

To think that I actually had a pang of sadness when Keith left! I had thought that he handled the dismissal with a degree of grace that would enable him to actually come out of this successfully. Now he has just reconfirmed the initial impression of him being an arrogant whiner.

Does a pattern book give you patterns or ideas for how to form them? The first girl to leave the show pointed out the concern that seeing a pattern in a book could give you ideas you might not have thought of otherwise
PR is a “closed book” exam so to speak. No notes, no text books, no outside contact. This seems the only way to level the playing field between contestants.

    he’s a phony and a liar.
if he were ‘set up’, why did he not make a big deal about it when confronted and dismissed by tim, which tim then suggested in the reunion special?
    good ridance.

  • Jennifer

He’s a jerk!!! He makes Jeffrey look like Mr. Rogers!!!!

If I hadn’t seen how he behaved during the dog challenge–claiming that the bracelet he secured around the dog’s neck was something he “made”–then I would have given him the benefit of the doubt. Even if he never used the books, he seems like someone who doesn’t take responsibility for his actions and tries to lie or BS his way out of situations.

For most of the season, I felt sorry for Keith and I thought, maybe he should have been reprimanded, but his ego got the better of him last night and he sounded completely “republican” in his need to make a point through lying and deception.
He broke the rules, he sneaked out. Even if a PA had shown him the door; He had to know better. I’m glad he was kicked out now. what a loser.

  • Lisa

Miles – don’t lump that loser in with us Republicans… It’s a shame because I liked his work. He was just a tool.

  • GeeMoney

He’s just mad because he got caught. Plain and simple. If anyone ruined or put a damper on his career, it was himself. Sorry Keith – I think that you are talented and all, but come on!
I also think that he was 2 seconds away from Heidi Klum cussing him out in German. She had the most evil look on her face when he was talking!

I saw contestants using cell phones — were those then provided by the show? It makes it sound like family can only reach them for emergencies, and yet Michael called his mother early on and later Laura received a video message from her kids. What’s the scoop with that?

  • Miles

Hey Josh, if you noticed, those phonecalls arrived to the same phone, and took place in the same production room (right outside of the parsons design room). Many reality TV shows make phone calls available, through a phone that is in control of the production. and it recorded. All of them get phone calls, but only the most dramatic or justifiable make it to the final edit.

  • Mario

    he deserved the boot.

  • Miles

Hey Lisa, Hastert, foley, bush, keith… all come from the same tree… liars… three of them are republican, two of them are gay. As Vincent would say, I stand by my comment.

  • Dana

    Speaking of Republican Liars:
Why doesn’t Mark Foley use bookmarks?
Because he likes to BEND over the PAGES!!!!!

Keith is a jerk and a liar. I am so glad he was kicked off. I wish Heidi had cussed him out. He never took responsibility for his actions. Never did he apologize for leaving. He just made excuses. I can’t stand him.

  • MindyM

I think Keith is a cheater and a liar and he got caught and he didn’t like it. That’s all there is to it. The fact that he didn’t put up a fight when he spoke to Tim is a perfect example of that. The game was up. I thought he sounded kind of whiny like a little kid. He was hostile and defensive and really rude to Heidi. Fortunately, Tim stepped in to cut off the discussion. Kieth’s not worth it. There are more deserving people who got booted off. No, I don’t mean Vincent, that segment they showed for the first time with him using every curse word in the English language at the production assistant who put his precious shirts in the laundry for goodness sakes, well it was worth it to tune in just to see that. Poor Vincent, it’s so hard when people can’t see that you are a legend in your own mind.
