What's Weirder? (TV Guest Star Edition)

Let’s play ”What’s Weirder?”

A. The inevitable Law & Orderization of Mel Gibson’s drunk driving arrest/anti-Semitic tirade will be brought to life by… Chevy Chase.

B. How I Met Your Mother‘s Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) will find love (or something like it) with Marshall’s hot older law professor, played by… Jane Seymour.

C. Cue the scary music: show-killer Rena Sofer will try to strangle the life out of Monday night television with guest spots on Fox’s 24 and NBC’s Heroes.

(See Mike’s answer after the jump.)

For me, Seymour ought to be a perfect fit on HIMYM, especially now that her Wedding Crashers role has transformed her from medicine woman to red-hot mama. The casting of Sofer (Blind Justice, Coupling, The Chronicle, Cursed, Oh Grow Up),meanwhile, isn’t such a bad thing; she’s an appealing actress who’sreally more unlucky than she is toxic. Plus, she’s guest-starred onplenty of shows that have lived to tell the tale. So goingwith A. And not because a thinly-veiled portrayal of a real-life lightning rod seems a stretch for ol’ Clark Griswold’s first dramatic role since, um, ever. No, it’s just the timing. I know L&O loves its ripped-from-the-headlinesshtick, but would it be asking too much for the aging franchise to giveus more than three months to digest unpleasant real-life events beforethey shove them back down our throats as fiction? Maybe I’m just cranky, butit seems to me if Dick Wolf wants to revitalize his franchise, then it’s timeto cook up some fascinating untold tales, not just ghoulishly rummage throughdepressing tabloid headlines.

At least he’s not (yet) using it in one of his two new comedies…

It’s a perfect opportunity fot Chevy. He can recreate famous celebrity scandals. This week on L&O. Next week, Hugh Grant’s car pool with a hooker on Without a Trace. Eventually, Bravo will make a series of of it. The first episode will be Chevy as Paris Hilton with her DUI.

Seriously, I wouldn’t cast Rena Sofer for sheer audacity of filming more than one episode of “Freinds with Benefits” (i refuse to call it by it’s given name!)

Jane Seymour stayed at the hotel I work at a few years ago, and I’ve hated her with a passion ever since. She’s an incredibly stuck-up, rude and tactless person, and if she’s on my favourite Monday night comedy, well, I’ll just have to boycott that night. Believe me, Barney deserves better (how about Susan Sarandon?)

Yes, Marnie, because it’s Rena Sofer’s fault that “Coupling” was created. Sure, being a retread of a British show (itself a retread of “Friends”) should’ve been an indication to everyone involved that it wouldn’t last, but given how competitive Hollywood is, actors can’t always be as selective as they’d like.
So I’m with Michael on this one — though Chevy Chase’s dramatic turn may just be bizarre enough for me to tune in. (Be great if they could get Beverly D’Angelo to cameo, too…)

I’ll also go with a. With Seymour there’s about a million jokes waiting to happen. Not only was she a Bond girl (she was in “Live and Let Die” as the fortune teller who gets deflowered by James Bond), but she was also a guest star on Galactica (the first series, back in 1978), but can still work as a sex symbol. She’s got it going on dude! Rena Sofer’s alright, but the thought of Chevy Chase returning to popular culture for anything is pretty darned wierd.
However, maybe playing hated jerks would be a good career move for a guy no one seems to like anymore. Even after reading the EW article about him, I still wonder “what happened to Chevy Chase?”

Chevy Chase as a Mel Gibson character is strange but in a funny way. Plus it makes sense location wise because Chase lives in Westchester. It was probably a last minute choice.
