Pick Jessica Simpson's next single

173719__jessica_simpson_lJessica Simpson has been busy peddling edible cosmetics, denying that ”Public Affair” is about ex-husband Nick Lachey, and generously sampling other peoples’ work. So she hasn’t had time to pick the next single to be released off her new album. Instead, she has asked that you do it.

Among the voting choices (we won’t discuss the borderline-sacrilegious cover of Dead or Alive’s ”You Spin Me Round”): She’s spreading her wings on ”The Lover in Me” (which incidentally the hater in me totally hates) and belonging to herself in the aptly named “I Belong to Me.” My favorite of the bunch, however, is the atrociously named ”B.O.Y.” — which basically consists of samples from the Cars and Cameo and a few hook-y synth riffs that make me want to hop in my convertible and right out of this godforsaken town.

Which song would you pick, Popwatchers?

I’d pick a song if it meant that she would disappear back into obscurity and leave the music to the artists who don’t steal or “borrow.”

Wow, they’re all equally bad. She’s well on her way to ruining every good 80s song ever.

    Who cares?

  • Bob G.

Can we say none and call it good?

  • Lynny

I agree with Bob G. None of them have any “shine” to them, except for the sampled parts which just makes me want to listen to the originals.

I totally disagree with the posts on here. I think the songs are all pretty good, with 3 stand out tracks. I think the 3 best that she put on there were:
    1) “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” – Great record. Great beat. Will prove that radio will respond to dance music (sorry, Madonna).
    2) “B.O.Y.” – Picks up where “A Public Affair” left off with awesome 80’s feel. Isn’t it amazing how much we all love the 80’s throwback music. Why isn’t music as good now as it was in the 80’s? Oh right, hip-hop and rap.
    3) “I Belong to Me” – good track. It is winning the “vote” so far and I would be happy with that as a single.
The other 3 are just okay for me.
What I think this proves though is that Jessica is a better artist than Nick. I only bought 3 songs off of his CD. I already bought “A Public Affair” and I will buy most of the tracks she just posted on her website. Overall, her album will be MUCH better.

The reason that the songs are all bad is, they rushed to make this album. How about some originalty? No one wants to keep listening to songs of her lousy marriage breaking up. Jessica, give it a rest!

Wait…she covered Dead Or Alive’s You Spin Me Round and Sheena Easton’s The Lover In Me?????
This woman has so far massacred every single one of the covers she’s done…from the overblown vocal theatrics of ANGELS to the insipidly uninspired neutralness of her TAKE MY BREATH AWAY to the so-minimalist-it’s-almost-inaudible vocal tics of THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING.
And the funny thing is that none of her covers have been hits, period.
Why would she keep making them?
Does someone in her camp lie to her about the chart performances of her songs, and keeps telling her that her covers are huge # 1 hits or something?
Ugh…she needs to go back to the well that created her one and only decent song, I WANNA LOVE YOU FOREVER…

Can we vote for a muzzle?

  • Ed

At least Jessica got some “notables” on her video for Public Affair AND getting an MTV special – she doesn’t need any help.
Janet Jackson on the other hand should enlist a couple of her fans to pick HER next single instead of the album cover.
Get Janet the difibulator (spelling?) STAT!

The horror – run away – she is killing everyone with her songs – oh my god the horror.

  • ep sato

I’d go with the Lover in Me. If the video features Sheena Easton getting her groove on in the video with Jessica, it might score some retro points.
But what’s up with the Madonna rip off? Did she get permission to totally steal ‘celebrate”? There’s got to be something behind that story…

  • kelly Dailey

None. Please make this woman and her whole family stop. Stop singing, stop posing, stop acting, stop clubbing, stop endorsing… JUST STOP!

  • kelly

Oh and by the way, does anyone else notice that she’s beginning to sound a lot like Britney (which isn’t something to strive for)? With her breathy deliverance and then her growly nasally low register. 90s pop is over. Look at Christina and Justin and how they have evolved and grown as REAL artist and hang your mic up, Jessica.

  • Nick

Oh dear! The screaming homo in me says Spin Me Around, and for some odd reason I think it may turn out ok!
