Trend Watch: Slezak's reality-show elocution lessons

161041__heidi_klum_lThey say trends come in threes, and I know in this case I’ve got only two, but I’ve got to shout it from the rooftop anyway: Don’t you absolutely love the way Project Runway host Heidi Klum (pictured) pronounces judge Nina Garcia’s name? That little extra ”eee” in Nina, the slight roll of the ‘rrr” in Garcia. For some reason, Heidi’s utterance, combined with Ms. Garcia’s comely visage, makes me a little weak-kneed. (Hear one of Heidi’s more subdued interpretations by clicking here.)

On a similar note, I always get a little rush hearing America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks tackling the moniker of renowned photographer Gilles Bensimon (the man responsible for shooting each season’s winner). The way she massages the word ever week, all French and exotic — Jeelbehnsimohn! — somehow makes Top Model’s endgame seem that much more enticing.

You know what I’m talking about, right, PopWatchers? Any other pronunciations that drive you wild — in a good way, that is?

I just want to thank you for showing a picture of Heidi’s comely visage.

I know what you’re talking about Slezak. However, in Heidi’s case, it’s natural for her to talk that way, and for Tyra, it’s all pretention.

Come on now who doesn’t get a lil stiff and moist when Cat Deeley says “jidges” on So You Think You Can Dance?

I think Slezak has it wrong. Heidi can’t pronouce the letter ‘r’. Nina Garcia, comes out Nina Gacia, and Project Runway comes out Project Wunway. Listen closely to the next chance you get.

It’s like you read my mind Michael. Heidi’s like a life-size doll with a string in its back that you pull and it says things – “it looks cheap, no?” Tyra, I’m less than enamored with simply for her *jank* treatment of Danielle during the last season. But I’m sure she’ll bounce back for the next. Her pronunciation of Gilles Bensimon is quite charming.

Anything at all in an Irish or Scottish accent.

Forget the way Tyra says Gilles Bensimon. Can we talk about the elimination rounds and her dramatic pauses? I. Love. Her. Dramatic. Pauses.
And the sentence, “I only have one picture in my hand and that picture represents the girl who will be staying on to become Americas. Next. Top. Model.” My favorite part of that sentence is that it makes NO sense. The photo doesn’t “represent” anything, it IS a photo of the girl. It’s not like they printed “jank” on a piece of paper and used that to tell Danielle she won (which would have been supercool btw).

I like how Cat Deeley says ” Tonight, one goy, and one gull, will be going haume.” Too cute. We say that at our house now; “Tonight, one goy, and one gull, will be going out for pizza.” etc.

I quite like the way Heidi pronounces “Nina Garcia”. I think it’s a lot better than other people (Santino, anyone?)

That’s just because her R’s aren’t hard. You may pronouce it Garrrcia, but Heidi is actually close to the Spanish pronunciation of the name.

I always enjoy it when that stuffy British guy from The Faboulous Life of (input tacky celebrity here) says something like:
“That’s eeeeenough money to buy 10,000 chihuahua’s and dress them in designer Versace gowns!!!”
    This show is so ridiculus.

I love how Cat Deeley says the phone numbers on ‘Dance’. The way she says 1-8-8-8 just makes me giggle.

  • Tyler D

Heidi Klum drives me wild in general – almost to the point that I would consider watching Project Runway. As for pronunciations that I enjoy (maybe not “drive me wild”), I’m always amused that Stephen Colbert refuses to pronounce the “T” at the end of his name despite the fact that he’s satirizing a conservative political talk-show host, who would realistically never allow anything foreign, and certainly nothing remotely French, on his show.

Um, old news that Germans cannot pronounce Rrrr’s very well. Old old news, derrrr.
As for the long eeeee in nina, that is just Heidi trying to sound Spanish, and sorry, but Garcia in Spanish is pronounced on the R, just not a forceful one. Heidi just cannot pronounce Rrrr’s.
No one says Gaaaasía in spanish!
    dios mío!

I think TGunn takes the cake for his emphatic phrasing and esssspecially for using as many “S”s in a sentence as he can possibly ssssqueeeze in.
“Dessigners, usse the Macy’sss Accessssory Wall asss well asss you can”
It is not soothing, no. But it makes a kick assssss drinking game. Knock it all back when TGunn says “designers”, take a ssssssip for every “S”. You get hammered fasssst.
“Mossst ccccertainly absssurdisst activitiess, but I’m nonethelesss impresssed by thissss ramnpant creativity.”

  • Andrea

Here I was thinking I was the only weirdo both in love with (and who even noticed) the pronunciations of Neenagassia and Jeelbensimohn. Thanks, Slezak!

Not reality tv related, but the way Jack black said words like “little” and “big” with fake Latino accents was superfly.
“Big Kiss little kiss” translates to:
    “Beeg Kees Leetol Kees”.

    Hahaha, Marshall, you are great!
