Which came first: The snakes, the plane, or MadTV?

Categories: Film

A disturbing rumor has snaked its way into my office, and I have no choice but to spread it: I keep hearing there’s a Mad TV sketch from a few years back that features… snakes on a plane. I have no first- or secondhand evidence to support this shocking allegation, no video to play for you, and no witnesses to produce. So I’ll fall back on today’s most popular debate strategem: I’m just sayin’. (As in: "My opponent has called me a liar and a warmonger. Well, I heard a rumor that he is a horse. I’m just sayin’.")

So: I’m just sayin’. But can someone out there more-than-say? Has anyone seen this sketch? Or did it air only in the alternate universe where Mad TV is the most popular sketch program on television?

Help me out, people. This is a potential scandal of Gibsonian proportions. I’m going to Woodward-and-Bernstein Samuel L. Jackson until he weeps for mercy. And you will love me for it. Or else!

It was a Saturday Night Live sketch about a plane full of cobras; Will Ferrell was the pilot.

LOL I remember that. …What a terrible sketch.

Feb. 7, 1998 SNL episode hosted by John Goodman. The skit was terrible. The episode did contain the legendary Neil Diamond Storytellers though.

I can confirm the SNL sketch featuring cobras on a plane (“When Cobras Attack” from February 1998), but no clue about MadTV. Do people actually watch that show?

  • Hannah

i just hope the movie keeps the 3 minute snake monologue from the sketch. lovely.

oh Wow. Usually movies based on bad SNL skits become worse movies. The Ladies Man, Superstar, Steward Smalie saves the world, it’s Pat the Movie, a Night at the Roxbury, any movie with Dana Carvey, the list is pretty extensive. The point being that such a discovery fares poorly for the movie. On the other hand, it does seem like it was made intentionally bad. Hopefully having some Samuel L. will give the movie what it needs.

Yup. SNL. They used to run it like once a day on Comedy Central before they stopped showing old SNL episodes. It was John Goodman, and it was the first thing I thought of when I heard they were making a Snakes on a Plane movie. Shall we start taking bets as to which one will be funnier?

While I haven’t seen the sketch, SNL or otherwise, I am truly offended that Scott would call MadTV the most popular sketch comedy program in Canada. While our alternate universe contains many a differences from the parallel dimension containing the 50 states, one similarity is that SNL reigns supreme always and forever!

There probably was an SNL and/or Mad TV sketch with some sort of snakes on some sort of plane. It’s not obscure enough, though, that it’s relevant anyway. I mean, the ’snakes on a plane’ concept is sort of inevitable ridiculousness.

About Canada, both ya’ll are wrong. The funniest show in Canada is called “Trailer Park Boys”, and it’s friggin’ hilarious! It’s all about these guys who live in a trailer park. One dude’s in every scene with a drink in hand, the guys end every season in jail, and every new season starts with the guys plotting on how to get out of jail!
As for Sketch shows, didn’t the canucks give us SCTV AND Nickelodeon’s “You can’t do that on television”?
Seems like we could use with more Canadian humor. We’ve already stolen their best sports (Basketball and Hockey)…

On MadTV, not sure of the year, there was a sketch with Ms. Swan on a plane. It began with her kicking the back of the seat of a fellow passenger and feigning ignorance when he confronted her. Then, she would press the flight attendant’s call button and say it was an accident. Later she blamed the kicking of the passenger’s chair on Scooby Doo then started saying that there were snakes on the plane.

In the 80s there was a sketch on SNL where Jesse Jackson was the host and there was a sketch involving a snake on a plane.

Snakes on a Plane might be scary, but I hear there may be an even scarier movie in the works: “Hair Gel on a Plane.” Ooooo, shudder.

  • ep sato

Without his beloved hair gel and liquids, just HOW will Samuel L. find a way to fight these m*therf*ck*ng snakes on a m*therf*ck*ng plane anyway? Speaking of which, I guess it shows how poor a job the TSA does that you can’t bring in a box cutter, but you can sneak in all the snakes you want through the metal detector!
