From comics she was born, and to comics she shall return: Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s post-cancellation adventures will soon begin anew — penned by Joss Whedon himself — in the pages of Dark Horse Comics. Here’s an exclusive cover image (by artist Georges Jeanty) from issue No. 1. As you can see, she’s kept in shape during her hiatus. (Dark Horse will debut No. 1 at Comic-Con this week.)
This isn’t Buffy’s first foray into comics. And it remains to be seen if it ranks anywhere near Joss Whedon’s best foray into comics: the all-too-brief "future slayer" saga Fray, which follows the dystopic advetures of Buffster’s 24th-century successor. (Some will persuasively argue that this is Joss’ best comics effort. I will counter with a spin move and the old axe-to-the-head. So watch it.)
So what’s going on in the extended Buffyverse? Well, you may recall the show ended with the creation of an army of Slayers. Now they’re organized, and the tide has turned in favor of the good guys. Ah, but you know how much Whedon hates winners: Soon an "old enemy" surfaces (Dark Horse is cagey on Big Bad’s identity), and Dawn starts "experiencing serious growing pains." I hope that means the Scoobies will be fighting a mutant, undead Alan Thicke.

An everyday, still-living Kirk Cameron serving the religious right is far more terrifying. They can argue whether “Left Behind” found a market due to Buffy.
Being a proud black man, when I saw the photo I screamed like a litte girl but also, as a proud nerd, I printed out the photo and raced to the nearest bathroom
THANK YOU, Joss Whedon!
I have a ridiculous question. Is there a mail subscription to this, or do I need to venture into a comic-book shop to get them? Not ever having been a comic reader, I’m extremely naive, but the fact that this is my most-favorite TV heroine ever, Buffy, I’m willing to expose my ignorance to find out how I can keep up with the Slayer. Please advise!
Dude that looks like Mischa Barton.
Can Angel get in this comic too then I can finally have the romantic reunion that I was always dreamed about for years.
Kimmie, Dark Horse offers preorders. Go here:
http://www.darkhorse.com/index.php
If you want that ‘waiting breathlessly for Tuesday night’ feeling again, preorder the issues; if you would prefer to go highbrow, wait for the trade paperback (TPB) to be released in a year. Either way, they’ll come to your mailbox.
I shouldn’t be so sensitive about this, but Buffy wasn’t really “cancelled.” That puts the show on the same level as any old show that lasted a couple months. It was really retired by Joss Whedon and especially SMG, who wanted to move on to film roles.
At 26, some would say I am too old for comic books, but this is the first set of comic books I will buy since I was 17, I can’t WAIT!
I am so excited. My inner fangirl is going nuts right now. I have been waiting for this forever. I’m not familiar with any of Georges Jeanty’s other work, but that cover looks amazing. Since he was Whedon’s first choice for the project, I should have expected nothing less. After all, Whedon also insisted on Cassaday for Astonishing X-Men, so he obviously has impeccable taste.
I love you, PopWatch. I love that you’re tracking the Buffy comic’s progress. Keep us posted, please! I can’t wait for it! (since it has to do with Dawn, I’m guessing Glory’s making some sort of comeback, and Dawn’s Key-ness is an issue again. You heard it here first.
Thanks so much, Christopher! I’ve bookmarked the site, and will be awaiting the pre-order availability!

‘Buffy’ resurrected (Joss Whedon is bringing everyone’s favorite slayer back…to comic books. This is an exclusive cover image [by artist Georges Jeanty] from issue No. 1) (Entertainment Weekly’s PopWatch) – The Voice Behind the Hood (new report relea…
So whatever happened to the proposed “Buffy” animated TV series featuring the voices of cast members from the prime-time show?
Does anyone know where specifically to go for preorders? I used the link that Christopher provided above but I can’t find where to go.
Thanks!
when did they state that the TPB would be released in a year. i prefer TPB but cannot wait that long. ill probably get the series and then the TBP later
The animated series died in the pre-production phase. I heard they couldn’t find a distributor or a studio to produce it.
I’m pretty sure that that cover is actually by Jo Chen, who has been announced as the cover artist. Georges Jeanty is doing interiors, and his work doesn’t really resemble that. (It is good, though.)
Dark Horse doesn’t do subscriptions through the mail. You’re going to have to reserve at your local comic shop, or through one of the mail order services, such as Khepri.com or DCBservice.com
Or, yeah, wait for Amazon or a book store to list it.
Or haunt the comic stands at Borders and Waldenbooks in the hopes they get it.
Or just go to your local comic shop. Find one here: 1-800-COMIC-BOOK
Comic-Books can be very well done these days. If you’re a “BuffY” fan and are interested in the book, don’t be afraid to give other books a chance. “Y-The Last Man”, “Ex-Machina”, “Ultimates” and “Fables” are just a handful of comic books that are well-written and great to read!
Hey Diana,
The preorder isn’t through Dark horse, but another company, called Thing From Another World. You can’t currently pre-order Buffy because Dark Horse hasn’t announced it and allowed TFAW to pre-sell it yet.
Once they do, TFAW will ship the item for you, preventing you from ever having to step into the geeky, eeky hall of doom that is your average comic shop. ;D
TFAW also does subscriptions, so you might be able to get a better rate on buying a whole year– not really sure, as I personally troll my way into the halls of doom!
God that makes me miss Buffy. Apart from that, that’s a darned good piece of art.
absolutely stunning.
I miss Buffy,Im so glad its coming out in comic books. The comic book store down town where I live better have it when it comes out. I love the picture, looks amazing!
thank goddess! i can’t wait to see what he does with dawn, talk about an undeveloped storyline…part slayer, full key!
yay i’m so happy, i miss buffy like a pain in my heart. i hope angel wll be in it too so that they can finally get to be together, otherwise i’m gona be seriously pissed off.
http://comicsinfinity.com/ is a really good place to get comic subscriptions.
I am super excited about this and can’t wait to see what Joss and the crew come up with.
Oh goody! Just what we need. First there was the show on television, and now children can get more demonic activity by reading a Buffy comic book. I am glad Kirk Cameron is still around. Christopher’s comment sounded vicious and truly unkind. If you are wishing Kirk death, I figure you have had too much Buffy.
Spike should get a mention. The comic will make more money that way. Plus, damn it, I miss him and Buffy snarking at each other. They were pretty together. And hot!!!
Spike along with Angel are owned by IDW comics. They will get no mentions.
I know. But he should. Let’s face it, the last couple years of the show, most females tuned in for Spike. Without our lust object of choice, what’s in it for the ladies? No fair that I won’t get to see his lovely face, preferably wearing eyeliner to bring out his blue blue eyes, and guh, the black nail polish. Sexy accent, bad boy ‘tude. It does not get any cooler than him. *dreamy sigh* He added so much spark to the show. Buffy without Spike there to mess up her pretty new life and screw with her head like he always did, it’s just going to feel off. Like something’s missing. I’m sorry for the simultaneous shameless gushing and whining, but that is the truth of the matter. LOL.
