I know, we’ve been prying your eyelids open Clockwork Orange-style and making you watch vintage music videos all day, but indulge us one more time, please, as we give thanks to the music gods at Pitchfork for drawing up this list of 100 Awesome Music Videos, and for including YouTube links to every last one of them. Mind you, these aren’t necessarily the best or most innovative (though plenty of those videos are included here), just videos that are fun to watch.
If anything, it’s a pretty strange list. There are clips here that even the writers hate but seem to have included out of sheer perversity (Chicago Bears Shufflin’ Crew’s 1986 ”Super Bowl Shuffle” — why, Lord, why?). Others are in the so-bad-they’re-good category (like the clip for David Hasselhoff’s cover of ”Hooked on a Feeling,” which we’ve mentioned before), and some are here because they were more memorable or influential than good (Duran Duran’s ”Hungry Like the Wolf”). And there are some that cover all these bases (R. Kelly’s ”Trapped in the Closet.”) Maybe ”awesome” really is the only word that can do all these clips justice.
At any rate, this list should keep you procrastinating fascinated for hours, dredging up long-suppressed youthful memories (I, too, remember being really disturbed by The Art of Noise’s ”Close to the Edit,” and I’m glad that ”Nothing Compares 2 U” is here to remind us why we all loved Sinéad O’Connor before she tried her damnedest to alienate everyone) or making fascinating new discoveries (we especially like Junior Senior’s 2003 clip ”Move Your Feet,” pictured, with deliberately low-res pixel graphics that mirror the song’s retro beat). Extra points for including The Replacements’ ”Bastards of Young,” the one video that deconstructs all the others.

Rabbit in your Headlights by U.N.K.L.E. feat. Thom Yorke of Radiohead. The Video was banned from MTV I think because of the violent content. However I did see some the video and I believe that this video is a rare gem.
David Hasselhoff is on this list?! I am part German myself, but I can’t stand his caterwalling vocals. Gi back to K.I.T. please!
That David Hasslehoff video seems to have been inspired by Rush’s awful video from the 80’s/early-90’s for “Time Stand Still” (viewable at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZiGQp00Buo&search=Rush%20Time%20Stand%20Still )- a nice little song, but a WRETCHED video. (Of course, it’s something of a Rush truism that any video they make that isn’t based on concert footage will suck horribly, but that’s a whole different matter. How a band that makes such incredible music can make such HORRIBLE videos is beyond me.)
At any rate, there’s just something VERY wrong about a grown man “flying” around in a badly done blue/green-screen studio! Now I have to find something to wash that image from my mind forever!!

Yeah, I agree. Rush is one of my all time favorite bands but I would have chosen Red Sector A as a better video. No disrespect to Aimee Mann but the video was re-tard-ed. And what is up with the no Cure videos? No Lullaby?
Thank you for this. I never heard of some of the videos but may have to check them out. I could cavil about some great videos that were left out, but why quibble when what you and Pitchfork have done such a great job of reminding us what music videos have been and can, on occasion, still do?
Overall, a pretty diverse list. I couldn’t resist adding a few of their omissions though.

I agreed with a couple of them (Take on Me…and that Kidz Bop one was terrifyingly hillarious) though most I never heard of. Three I can think of off the top of my head that I was disapointed weren’t on there: “Weapon of Choice” (just plain fun to watch), “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (so over the top and so 80s it borders between hillarious and scary), and that one Darkness song, I think it’s called “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” (just plain amusing).
I’ll second disbelief over the omission of Christopher Walken in Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice.” I clicked through each page, expecting to find it on the next screen, until I reached the bottom of page 10 shrouded in disbelief. Serious lacuna, jock-o.

I’m definitely surprised that there’s no “Weapon of Choice” on that list. Seriously. That video is the EPITOME of awesome. I also would’ve included…

- “Don’t Stop” by Red Hot Chili Peppers
- A whole bunch of Foo Fighters videos (how can they not be on the list at all?!)
- “Tribute” by Tenacious D (if just for the Dave Grohl demon)
… And some other stuff I can’t think of right now. But overall, it was an interesting list! At least they had some creative choices.
