Is that Brittany Murphy singing backup?

95051__murphy_lIf Brittany Murphy’s voice could be photographed, I’d advocate putting it on the sides of milk cartons; that’s because — like Elvis, Tupac, and Britney Spears’ sex appeal — it’s quite possibly alive and well and strutting under our noses in total anonymity. Indeed, the actress — whose collaboration with Paul Oakenfold, "Faster Kill Pussycat," is up to No. 8 on this week’s Billboard’s Dance Singles Sales charttells Cosmopolitan (scroll down) that she has anonymously lent her vocals to "a lot of other people’s albums," and hears herself on the radio "all the time."

Which, of course, has me obsessing: Where have we heard Murphy belting before? Bush frontman (and Gwen Stefani husband) Gavin Rossdale appeared in Murphy’s 2004 romantic comedy, Little Black Book, while her breakout picture, 1999’s Girl, Interrupted, featured another erstwhile singer, the non-gay Jared Leto, but those dudes seem unlikely collaborators for a dancefloor diva like Murphy. I’ve got a better theory: Murphy hosted SNL on Nov. 16, 2002, with a musical guest by the name of Nelly. Do you think that maybe, just maybe, it could be Murphy cooing the famous "Hot in Herre" lines, ”I am/Gettin’ so hot/I wanna take my clothes off”? Until one of you guys chimes in with a more plausible sighting hearing, I’m choosing to believe it, since, like her character in Don’t Say a Word, she’ll (probably) never te-el.

I’m a HUGE BritMurph fan, and this is even news to me!
You know her voice sounds a lot like
P!nk’s…hmmm…see, now I’m gonna have to figure this one out!
Oooh, Slezak…THIS is the real head scratcher!!!

    found this on a site:
“I’ve been singing anonymously my whole life. I’ve sung the hooks on a lot of rap and R&B songs – I just never took the credit,” Brittany says.
Since this is not really my genre of musical taste, it still make me curious what songs she did this on?

Not a super fan of either Murphy or dance tunes, but have to admit she has a good voice…

What about Justin Timberlake’s Rock Your Body? I love this news story!

I couldn’t say, but she should’ve dropped names, no? I wouldn’t have minded that. I love the “Pussycat” track, though…been talkin’ ’bout it a lot. Check it: http://www.moviemartin.blogspot.com

I loved here singing “Nobody does is better” by carly simon when she was in Little Black Book…lying on bathroom floor, awesome acoustics too.

I may be influenced by the fact that the bass lines are virtually identical, but I’d pick “Flashdance” by Deep Dish as a possibility.

    She performs as “Luanne Platter”

Since she dated him, she must be on at least one Eminem song

I first heard Brit sing on the MTV Movie Awards, the year when Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar hosted. The show opened with a huge song and dance number, and Brit stood up in the audience with a microphone and belted out a verse. I remember thinking she was amazing!

I first heard her sing in “Clueless” – she sang along to the “Mentos” commercial. She has talked about her singing for a long time – although I wasn’t aware that she was actually uncredited on current releases. I wonder why she doesn’t take credit for her work? Anyhow, this is a fun mystery to try and solve. It’s kind of like when Sheryl Crow first became super popular and had said that she had recorded songs for other artists and wouldn’t say who.

Remember when Brittany sang for like 5 seconds during Riding in Cars with Boys? She was really good!
So why can’t she put out an album instead of She Who Shall Not Be Named but we all know which leaving-the-scene-of-an-accident empty-headed heiress I am referring to.

I also saw (and heard) Brittany belt out four lines during the MTV awards four years ago. She was pretty good. But the actress I REALLY want to see get her keister in the studio and lay down some tracks is Zooey Deschanel, who lent her smoky voice to “Baby It’s Cold Outside” in Elf. She was terrific! Hey, wasn’t Brittany gonna play Janis Joplin at one time?

  • al

I could’ve sworn that was Britney Murphy on the Eminem song, “Superman”. It says it’s Dina Rae, not sure if that’s an actual artist, but it sounds like Britney.

  • For Al

Hey Al, if you like Zooey’s voice (I know I do) she sings a little bit in the movie Winter Passing. Not much but all we have for now.

    Thanks!
